Rernarkable Mineral Discovery, Moun tain of Iron Discovered. The exisfe»ce of an immense iron mountain, ihnose i en the very shores of Lake Superio , . outrivalling the liunous iron mountains of Marquette, seems al most too marvellous for belief, yet the fact is even so. That such a wonderful mineral deposit should remain undisc.iv ered until a very recent date, is the most remarkable feature of the whole affair, and shows how great and diversified is the natural wealth of that world-ren owned region contrasted with the tardy pace of its devtlopment, p.oticularly on the Canad'an side, where the newly dis coveredmine is located At the distance of only about f :rty-tire inies from Sault Ste-Marie, this mountain lifts its frcwn ing summit to the latitude of six hundred feet above . the lewd of the lake, being about twice as high as the iron tin am ta;ns of Marquette. The first examina tion was made in July last by Prof. S Ributtield, of Detroit, who, front the general features, came to the conclusion teat the range was identical with that of Marquette, and in order to satisfy"him self on this point, he vit.ited Mnrquett( to get the range, by which his theory was found to be fully sustained. A company was subsequently fly med, which obtained a patent from the Cana dian Government for 3,200 acres of land, which comprises all, or nearly al, of the mineral tract in question. About fiyir weeks ago some of the 1 epresentativus of the company, t giber with a few sci entific gentlemen, the whole party num bering twenty-tur persons, set out tOr the di-tria upon a tour of explorai ion. provided with a 1 necessary appliances for examination and survey, '1 h e put y returned a day or two since, and it, port that the most sanguine expectations con cerning the extent. and rich ncss of the mines have been motoe than re,tlixc i.— The ore is of the very tine,t quality, cor responding to the ores of tht 3.l;:rquette mines, and extending through a mange of Feveral miles. in depw-its intiny feet in thickness. It is so plentifid that by no human agency can the supply be ex hausted fir hundreds of years: 'Of the unequalled richness of the ore we are en abled to speak definitely.. A quantity which was taken from the depth of only ffteen feet from the surface, and melted in a common blast furnace. realized GO per cent. of pure iron. When we re member that 30 per cent. is a good wcrk 'lug average, the richness of the newly discovered ore will be fully apparent.— At a greater depth from the surface, its purity will of courst. be on a correspond ing scale, in accordance with a well known mineralogical la w.—Detroit Tn./i -ons Oct. 15. Extravagance. Perhaps there is seal cely any thing more destructi'. - e to a young man's character than the reputation of extrava gance—spending more than c reum stances warrant, mare than can hoporr„ bly be repaid. The ditlicuities in which a spendthrift is continually involved are very disgusting to all steady people.— They disapprove, and justly, of such conduct ; they fear to connect them selves with persons who must often become burdensome to them ; for he that gets a habit of exceeding his in come is seldom cured of it. All the sufferings he endures himself, all the vexations he brings upon his relatives and friends, affect him but in a slight or transient manner. His being assisted out of his trouble will only encourage future imprndencies ti 1, having wea ried friend after friend, in rapid succes sion, he becomes an outcast front socie ty, and eventually aims to obviate the consequences (t' his follies by crime, some disgraceful or despet ate crime. For your own comfort, for your friends' solace, for the sake of your eventual prosperity, cultivate a str:et manly habit of economy. It is impos sible to raise a good character without it. And this one single article, con nected with moderate talent, will rec ommend you to all with whom you may wish confidence, or expect remuneration. Assistance, should you need it, will not be Withheld, it' it is known that your are of personal expenses is correct But as nothing can essentially benefit or relieve a man inattentive in this point ; so those who might otherwise be in clined to favor you, will be backward to do it, perhaps will roughly refuse all connectiom or concern in your ruinous affairs. Do not esteem the practice of it mean. Generous, free, call it what you will, are terms which do not apply, unless it is literally and truly your own money with . which you arc sporting; nor then, it' you sport more than your rank and cirstunstanecs prudently war rant.—Taylor. Hints for Beggars Baron Rothschild, of Paris, it. is said, possesses the most voluminous collection of begging letters that any financier ever received. They form a complete Series. Among the number is one late ly addressed to the Baron, cftaining the very tempting proposition Mmat for the bagatelle of fifty thousand francs the writer would engage to show how he could prolong his life to the age of one hundred and fifty years. The fol lowing is the Baron's reply : "SIR : It has frequently happened to me to be threatened with death if I did not give a sum of money. You are certainly the first that has ever asked me for it in proposing to prolong my life. Your proposition is, without doubt, fax better and more humane. But my religion teaches me that wit . are all un der the band of God, and I will not do anything to withdraw myself from Ills decrees. My refusal, moreover, does not in any way attack your discovery, from.which you will not tail, I hope, to profit yourself. Regretting that I can not accede to your proposal, I sincerely congratulate you on the one hundred and fifty years which you are called on Ur live in this world. " Accept, Ilse., 'J. DE ROTHSCHILD." MOFFITT. Oct. 2.6—'64. NEW HOTEL AT JACICTOWN, nun towirnr, PA. === THE peculiar taint or infection which we call SCROFULA lurks iv the constitutions of ‘nitituties of men. It they produces or is rodueed by an en !ebled, vitiated state the blood, wherein iat fluid becomes in impetent to sustain le vital forces in their igorous action, and ayes the system to tll. into disorder and cay. The scrofulous coutaminatiorr is variously caused by mercurial disease, low living, disordered digestion from unhealthy food s impure air, filth and filthy habits, the depressing vices, and, above all, by the venereal infection. Whatever be its origin, it is hereditary in the constitution, descending froneparents to children unto the third and fourth generation ; " indeed, it seems to be the rod of Him ivho says. " I will visit the iniqui ties of the fathers upon their children." The diseases which it originates take various names, according to the organs it attacks. In the lungs, Scrofula produces tubercles, and finally Consumption ; in the glands, swellings which suppurate and become ulcerous sores ; in the stomach and bowels, derangements which pro duce indigestion, dyspepsia, and liver com plaints; on the skin, eruptive and cutaneous affections. These all having the same origin. require the same remedy, viz. purification and, invigoration of the blood. Purify the blood, and these dangerous distempers leave you. With feeble, foul, or corrupted blood, you can not have health ; with that " life of the flesh" healthy, you cannot have scrofulous disease. is compounded from the most effectual anti dotes that medical science has discovered for this afflicting distemper, and for the cure of the disorders it entails. That it is far superior to any other remedy yet devised, is known by all who have given it a trial. That it does com bine virtues truly extraordinary in their effect upon this class of complaints, is indisputably proven by the great multitude of publicly known and remarkable cures it has made of the following diseases : King's Evil or Glandular Swellings, Tumors, Erup tions, Pimples, Blotches and Sores, Ery sipelas, Rose or St. Anthony's Fire, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Coughs from tu berculous deposits in the lungs, White Swellings, Debility, Dropsy, Neuralgia, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Syphilis and Syphilitic Infections, Mercurial Diseases, Female Weaknesses, and, indeed, the whole series of complaints that arise from impurity of the blood. Minute reports of individual cases may be found in AYER'S AMERICAN ALMANAC, which is furnished to the druggists for gratuitous distribution, wherein may bo learned the directions for its use, and some of the remarkable cures which it has made when all other remedies had failed to afford relief. Those cases aro purposely taken from all sec tions of the country, in order that every reader may have access to some one who can speak to him of its benefits from personal experience. Scrofula depresses the vital energies, and thus leaves its victims far more subject to disease and its fatal results than are healthy constitu tions. Hence it tends to shorten, and does greatly shorten, the average duration of human life. The vast importance of these considera tions has led us to spend years in perfecting a remedy which is adequate to its cure. This we now offer to the public under the name of AYER'S SARSAPARILLA, although it is com posed of ingredients, SOME of which exceed the best of Sarsaparilla in alterative power. By. its aid you may protect yourself from the suffer ing and danger of these disorders. Purge out the foul corruptions that rot and fester in the blood ; purge out the causes of disease, and vigorous health will follow. By its peculiar virtues this remedy stimulates the vital func tions, and thus expels the distempers which lurk within the system or burst oat on any part of it. We know the public have been deceived by many compounds of Sarsaparilla, that promised much and did nothing ; but they will neither be deceived nor disappointed in this. Its virtues have been proven by abundant trial, and there remains no question of its surpassing excellence for the cure of the afflicting diseases it is in tended to reach. Although under the same name, it is a very different medicine from any other which has been before the people, and is far more effectual than any other which luta ever been available to them. D MOREDO.K CHERRY PECTORAL, The World's Great Remedy for Coughs, Colds, Incipient Con sumption, and for the relief of Consumptive patients in advanced stages of the disease. This has been so long used and so univer sally known, that we need do no more than assure the public that its quality is kept up to the best it ever has been, and that it may be relied on to do all it has ever done.
