With this view they have just laid in a complete, varied and attractive assortment of Dress, Staple and Variety Goods, selected with excellent judgment and bought at the lowest prices. Besides hav ing a full line of shelf goods, they have a large stock of prime groceries, and will aim to keep constantly vn hand all kinds of Country Produce. There are no More • aceomodating men and dealers in the community than the Messrs. CLARK, and we predict that they will drive a large and paisperons business. Elegant Photograps and Photograph Albums. A brief visit to the Photograph Gallery of Messrs. WALLAcs 6; CRAIG, and an examina tion of their specimens, enables us to speak in the highest terms of their Pictures. They are incomparably superior to any thing of the kind we have seen had in Waynesburg, in truth, accuracy and finish. Mr. WALLACE has had large experience in this line, hag ing been a long time connected with Mr. Young's gallery in Washington, one of the best Photograph establishments in the coun try, not excepting the great cities ; and Mr. CRAIG is also known to onr readers as a most promising artist. Their assortment of Albums is large and attractive, as well as cheap. We trust the folks hereabouts will give the new firm lib eral enconragment. • The Quota of Marion Township. Col. DILL visited New Brighton, last week, to ascertain the precise state of the account of Marion township with the Gov ernment under the several calls for troops, and we are gratified to announce that our borough has an excess of one over her quota. It appears that 16 Veterans have re-enlisted from this place. It Would be well enough for citizens of other townships to enquire into the facts con cerning their enlistments, so that no injus tice may be done them under the approach ing Draft. Removed. Oar young friend, Wm. BEituvattr., as will be seen from his advertisement in another column, has removed his Boot and Shoe Manufactory to his residence opposite the Methodist church. "WILL" is a clever, hon est and industrious fellow, and is entitled to a liberal share of custom, and we are glad to know is receiving it. An Eagle Shot. The American Standard; of Uniontown, Pa., says: Wm. Hopwood, Jr., on Thurs day evening last presented ns.a "bald eagle" which ho had shot on his father's farm, about one mile south of Uniontown. H. MUER, news: ASSEMBLY. SHERIFF. COMMISSIONER. DISTRICT ATTORNEY. AUDITOR. POOR ROUSE DIRECTOR. TO THE LOST, LATEST FROM THE FRONT! The Army Across the River—Start ling News Expected. W - SUM:TON, May 5 P. IL—The Republican has just issued an extra con taining the following important intelli gence. IVe feel authorized to state, since it cannot now afford any informa tion to the enemy, that the Army of the Potomac has advanced - fliwards Rich mond, and the struggle lbr the posses sion of the rebel capital has began.— Our army moved on Tuesday night, and has now grossed the Rapidan.— The crossing was made' at Jacob's, Cul pepper, Germania and United States fords, and was effected without serious opposition. Lee has been compelled to tall back from the strong position which he has held us at bay all winter—wheth er he will make a stand this side of the defences of Richmond we are not ad vised. It is the opinion of some that he will fight at Chancellorsville. Every hour may now bring us news of a battle, but we are iuclined to the belief that it will be a foot race for Richmond. The rebel capital will un doubtedly be flanked and invested should Lee's army occupy its defence, and the country may reasonably hope that this time it will fall. FROM THE BATTLEFIELD. WAsnixoToN, May .9:'--- 2 The Republi can's extra says there is reason to believe from dispatches already received since our first extra to-day, that Lee was for ced to .fight at Spottsylvama, and was again repulsed and compelled to retreat. Another statement is that Gen. Grant had flanked him and got between the rebel army and Lichmoud. Lee's report of the battle of Thursday last, as published in the Richmond pa pers, has been telegraphed to this city by Gen. Butler. Lee says that Gen Grant attacked him, which contradicts the report received here that Lee made the attack upon our army. Lee employs this language: ''Thank God, we have repulsed the attacks of the enemy."— He states that Longstreet is badly woun ded. Lee S nothing in his report about the fight of Friday. The dispatches shop- lat :•Gen. But ler is still holding the lea e of the railroad between Petersburg and Richmond, preventing Beauregard from reinforce., ing Lee. l'llll, A DELPHI A , May 9.—Mrs. Gen. WAsinNwros, May 9.- 7 A dispatch from the Headquarters of the Army, dated Saturday evening, May 7th, says: at noon to-day our skirmishers advance i, and found the enemy had retreated. Gen. Grant pushed out a strong pick et force on all the avenues leading westwardly, and assumed his original plan of the campaign. Gen. Hancock's force is now at Spot sylvania Court House. We may not hear from the glorious army for a week again. Among our losses :Ire Gem Alexander Hays, of - Pittsburgh, killed ; and Col. Joseph Hays, 18th Massachusetts, wounded. Our casualties are repo' ted at from 2,000 to 4,000 men in Thurs day's battle. Official Dispatch from Gen. Lee-- Longstreet Wounded, and Johnson Killed. WASIIINGTON, 9.---This Depart + meat has just received frem. Gen. But ler the official report ot:the rebel Gen. Lee, of the operations of-Friday He says the loss in killed is riot large, but he has many wounded, and states that our forces attacked them and, caused some contusion. He , grieves to an nounce that Longstreet : W severely wounded. General Jenkins- was killed ' and General Pe ram badly wounded on Thursday. He thanks mercifid God that every advance of Grant has been repulsed. The belief here is that Grant is achieving a complete victory. THE FIGHT :OF FRIDAY ! Most Terrific yet Fought. • WASHINGTOIL May 9tll-3 o'clock A. M The most terrific battle yet fought by the Army of the ,Potomac closed to-day. Lee's entire army has made repeated and furious assaults on our right and left Wings comman ded by Hancock and Sedgwick; with tempo rary success, but has been driven back with great slaughter. An attack w/o made about 4 p. in. simultaneously on our whole line, which was gallantly repulsed. Towards dark the enemy concentrated up on one extreme right, and fell suddenly up on Sedgwick, crushing a portiOn of his line. Gen. Sedgwick re-forming his- line, secur ing it against further disaster. The enemy withdrew from Sedgwick's front, under cov er of darkuess. Our Joao have been very heavy. LATER General Ingalls telegraphs trom Old Wil derness at 11.30 r. as. on Saturday, that the enemy are said to be retiring. General Butler has sent a dispatch that he has made a demonstration against the Rail road between Richmond and Petersburg, and that he had succeeded after some_ pretty se vere fighting; iu breaking the communica tions. Beauregard is in command of the rebel forces at Petersburg and Richmond. The Washington Star's extr% says Grant has a field full of prisoners, andlad advanc ed to Spstsylvania Court House. A verbal message received at Gen. Hollttek's Head puarters, by a messenger -from the army, states that the battle clred on Iriday, the . enemy having fallen bac about twelve mi,les, leaving their dead and wiyundesl On'the field. On Saturday at 1 o'clack;.Lee ac's in furl re treat through -Spottsylvania, and when' the messenger left, Hancock was entering that place in pursuit. Butler iS aeportedivithim ten miles of Richmond. A party of three hundred cavalry, under thr command of Major Brinton, .of the 18th Pennsylvania, were sent from Todd's tavern to relieve the pickets stationed several miles below on the Spottsylvtnia road, and in car rying out their instructions wet* attacked by a large but rebel troopers, -by irbom they were drii•en back to the tavern in some con fusion, and quite a large number of the above named regiment. were taken prisoners.
