On the evening of, the .3d of _Nov. 1862, a man nawed:John • Strawbridge, a workman at the rolling mill in Har risburg, Pa., left -his home, telling his wife that he :was going to a place of amusement. She awaited Ids return, but as he failed to appear, a search was instituted the next morning, resulting in finding him lying insensible on the river bank. He died soon after being taken home, and the cause of his death has ever since been involved in mys tery. The Harrisburg Telegraph, of Tuesday, however, explains the whole affair, as follows : .An old lady named Pattie has called upon District Attorney Herr, stating that a young lady who recently died in our city, confessed upon her death-bed, that she, in company with a lover, were Ipromenading on the river bank on the ' evening preceeding the day on which Strawbridge was found, that her lover knocked down Strawbridge and rob bed him, supposing that he was dead ; that she was forced to swear . that she would never reveal the murder, but her conscience compelled her to state the facts before departing hie. The alleg ed murderer is in the army, and if guilty, it is hoped that some means may be fbund by which he may be made to suffer the penalty of his crime. The case is a singular one throughout., Quite a sensation has been created here by the revelations reported to the dis trict attorney. PITTSBURGH GENERAL MAR KETS. From the ' foregoing exhibits in connection with the Auditors' state ments, tde public can see the opera tions of the Farm and House during the year 1864. The aggregate cx panditures are sometihng larger than those of the previous year; but when the greatly incresed cost of provi sions; and other necessaries for the support of the inmates is consider ed, the directors cannot but think the institution has been ecomomi• catty conducted. Beaides this, the number of paupers relieved daring the year has been materially greater and the expenditures embrace the item of sawing lumber for the barn, which being for a permanent im provement need not again soon oc cur. 4,461 79 7 50 40 00 79 43 290 6381 The expenses have also been greater then they should be, through the practice or rather the necessity of paying for almost everything in County orders. Coald the Directors and Steward be furnished with money to purchase the necessary previsions, clothing, etc., we are satisfied that a saving of at least ten per vent could be effected. We therefore earnestly recommend 04 the law be so changed that tlie *li neal estimates shall be collected by the Treasurer and paid in cash upon the Orders of the Commissioners to tee Directors. It will make po dif ference to the tar-payers, as nn4er the old system - he paid the poor tax in cash, and under the present, there are but few who 'pay their sestet" taxes eptirelyJn orders.
