Our readers will see by a notice to-day's paper, that Lieut. S. PORTER, of Col. Max well McCaslires Regiment, has opened a re cruiting office in Wheeling. Every body in Greene county knows "Mack McCaslin," and what a genial, kindly, glorious good fellow he is, and we are mistaken if scores of our lads don't flock to his standard. The Boun ty is the same as paid every where, and the Regiment, it will be seen, does duty with in easy distance of home to men from this county. At Home. Beall.. Martin Supler, of Jacksonville, in this cosety, and a member of Co. C., 18th Pa. Cavalry, reached home sometime since. He was badly wounded in the left arm in a picket skirmish on the Rappahannock, and can never have much use of the limb. lie is a gallant tellow,'and in the affair in which he was wounded displayed the coolest cour age. Wool-growers would do well to avail themselves of this chance to increase their flocks. Accident. Judge Gari ard, we regret to learn, recent ly discolated the cap of his knee by a fall. He is just recovering from the injury, how ever Sensible Editor. A comical sort of a newspaper editor jects an offer of a druggist to advertise his drugs and medicines, and take his pay our oaf THE snot. He says he will take nearly all sorts of pralines in payment for papers and advertising, "such as parsnips, wooden combs; old clothes, cold - victuals, &c.,"—but lie won't take PIITSIO. Good for Her. The McGregor Times says that a young lady of that town who lately fell on one of the slippery side-walks, passionately exclaim ed, "Before this winter is over I'll have a man to hang on to, see if I don't." 16'It may be consoling to some to know that only the lean cows, sheep, hogs and chickens, died during the recent cold snap out West. The fat animals generally escaped. —tExchange. siy..So it was hereabouts, and it took re markably tender nursing and the contents of two of our best straw mattresses to bring "Brindle" through. By the way, she is again out of provender. Won't somebody send ns a load of hay, fodder, or some sort of feed? or trade us a grind-stone or some old pot metal for the poor, dear old brute? arTo preserve apples from rotting—put them into a dry cellar, of easy access to a large family of children.—[Exchange. serWe have tried the above plan and can recommend it. • sir A convention of Bloomer damsels is said to have resolved that they will wear short dresses or nothing. The aggregate ex r anditures aro sometihng larger than those of the previous year; but when the greatly incresed cost of provi sions: and other necessaries for the support of the inmates is consider ed, the directors cannot but think the institution has been ecomomi. cally conducted. Besides this, the number of paupers relieved during the year has been materially greater and the expenditures embrace the item of sawing lumber for the barn, which being for a permanent im provement need not again soon oc cur. $4,26 I 79 $373 21 890 09 1430 39 232 53 417 70 355 15 49 20 10 00 11 00 127 38 8200 24 75 7 50 40 00 50 00 79 43 2 00 63 81 The expenses have also been greater then they should be, through the practice or rather the necessity of paying for almost everything in County orders. Could the Directors and Steward be furnished with money to purchase the necessary provisions, clothing, etc., we are satisfied that a saving of at least ten per 'cent could be effected. We therefore earnestly recommend that the law be so changed that the an nual estimates shall be collected by the Treasurer and paid in cash upon the orders of the Commissioners to the Directors. It will make no dif ference to the tax-payers, as under the old system he paid the poor tax in cash, and under the present, there are but few who 'pay their county taxes entirely in orders. We also again refer to the utter unfitness of the bnilding under its present arrangement for the proper and humane care of Insane paupers. One room has been fitted u so that some degree of comfort andsecurity has been attained ; but if the insane of the county now at Harrisburg and Pittsburg nospit.als, are brought home, and put in our house of em ployrnept, as it is now the intention to do, some suitable provision must at once. be made for their reception.
