MeV!. !f wir • 11000 4 1 1 10— It semis fionl the Atetelli 3 / 4 of the news brought from. New Orleans by the New Brunswick, urn:n:444 , 240w York, that the steamer Mississippi, lost in the line of the fleet while at tempting to pass Port Hudson, on the fright of the 14th, in going up the river, was struck by three or four shots only, and the damage was com paratively insignificant—but when nearly in the centre of the range of batteries, the smoke and steam from the boats in advance, and batteries, so en veloped the ship that the pilot lost his bearing and the frigate grounded on the right bank of the river. For forty minutes she was un der a . terrific fire from the rebel bat teries. During this time she fired two hundred and fifty rounds. Du ring all the time she was under fire there was no particular excitement aboard' After Ole order to abandon her was given, the boats wore lowered, and four wounded men put in first ; the crew then filled the boats. Many jumped overboard, expecting to swim ashore; some were picked up by the boats, and a few are supposed to have been drowned. Those who reached the levee were taken off by the %Essex, to the number of fifty or sixty. Whet the crew were all off the ship, Capt. Smith and Lieut. Derby spinkled turpentine in the ward-room setting it on fire. The Captain of the fore-hold fired her forward, and the Captain and Lieutenant pulled for the Essex. The Mississippi was soon in flames, and the fire presently reaching the magazine, the ship was blown up with tremendous explosion. About 25 or 30 were killed, and four wounded, during the action. Deceased Soldiers. In return for the corutesy of the rebels in forwarding us lists of Union "prisoners who have died while confined in their prisons, our Medi cal Department has caused a similar list of rebel prisoners, who have died while in our custody, to be prepared with great care and forwarded to Richmond. It embraces about two thousand names, and is believed to be almost absolutely complete. It is not stippOsed" that the list furnished us by the rebels constitute a fifth of the number of our men who have actually died in their hands. The mortality in their prisons is known to have been much greater than ours; and there are large numbers known to have been taken by them who can only now be accounted for on the supposition that they are dead. Keeping Horses' Legs and rest in Order. 111 were asked to account for my horses' legs and feet being in better order than those of my neighbor, I should attribute it to the following circumstances :—First, that they are all shod with few nails, so placed in the shoe as to permit the foot to ex pand'every time they move ; second that they all live in boxes instead of stalls, and can move whenever they please, third, that they have two hours' daily walking exercise when theynre not at work ; and fourth, that 1 have not a head-stall or rack chain in my stable. These four cir cumstances comprehe id the whole mystery of keeping horses' legs and feet' in sound working condition up to a good Old age.—Miles on the liorse, BREAD 1800 YEARS OLD. An important arehmological dis covery haqust been made at Pom peii, of a mill with a great quantity of corn in excellent preservation, and an oven with eighty-one loaves, arranged in rows, and but slightly affected by the heat of the lava, hav ing been protected by a quantity of ashes which had covered the iron door fitted to the mouth of the oven. These loaves have all been got out entire. A large iron shovel, for in troducing the loaves into the oven. has also been found on the spot, with a remnant of its wooden han dle. This is the first discovery of the kind on record. Not far from this place, 53 silver and 561. bronze coins have also been found. Fleeing from their Friends. The city of Lexington, Ky., is crowded with refugees from South ern Kentucky. Secessionists not less than loyalists flee to our lines for protection, dreading conscription more than they love the Confeder 'ate cause. They uniformly repre sent that the invaders are seizing all the stock and grain left in the cour try, and are sending what they do Lot require for themselves South.— They do not respect the "reserved rights" of their friends any more than the forfeited rights of their ene mies. Military necessity is the plea —and the impressment is made gen eral. 121.': , ',.*A 1 :46W4FS OF •1111 PITTSBIT 11 II SATU lil) A Y POST, A Weekiy Fa en y -Vero cry,er of altatweloth Site, Printed in large New Type, upon Fine White Paper, AT THE: Dm' Nucl.: (F • al. It will freely and fairly discuss all legitimate subjects of newspaper comment, including, of course, and pre eminently at this time, all questinhs connected with the existing unhappy condition of our country. • It will fearlessly criticise the public acts of public servants, and defend the legal and constitutional rights of individual citizens and sovereign states, against as saults from any quarter. It will seek to awaken the minds of the people to a proper sense of the actual condition of the Republic— to present to them, truthfully, the fearful perils is which we stand as a nation—to exhibit the magnitude of the task that is before them, if they would check our downward progress—and to inspire them with patri otic determination to apply the remedy for our nation al ills.
