Sible Fire at Prome, Burmah. ;The New York Chronicle publishes : the following extract from a letter written by Rev. Dr. Kincaid, Baptist Millsionary to Burinah, to a friend in this country, giving an account of an extensive fire in which the Mission and the Christian families suffered great loan: "On the 19th of this month (April,) a fire broke out in the southern side of the town. The wind was fresh and steady, but moderate, from the south; and, as the fire spread, in creased greatly. There had not Wm a drop of rain, of course, in five fweliths, and everything was crisp.— In less than one hour the beat be tame .so intense, that fearful whirl winds were produced, which stripped the roofs from buildings, and lifting the fiery -Noses to a great height, scattered them in all directions.— The 'noise of these 'whirlwinds was lilts .distsvnt thunder, and the flames legaid from 'gnaw to house in one great ocean of fire. In less than four hours nothing was left that zooid consume. Even brick buildings supposed to be fire-proof were de= stroyd. "It was heart rending to see thansirds of men, women and chil dren, of all ages and ranks, fleeing for their lives: mothers agonising for their missing children, and children for their missing parents.— Thousands rushed into the river to 4mpape the intolerable heat. About twenty are reported as having per ished in the flames; 4,500 houses are burnt, and 5,000 families without a shelter, or attiele of furniture, or cooking utensil, and the rainy sea son is just at hand. Beside the hous ash vast amount of merchandise and other property is destroyed. -*The chapel which I built last year, and , had been finished but sev en mouths, is , gone. All our Christian fades but two, which lived ou the windward side of the fire, have lost vegthing." Wife Venue Lady. it,is certainly not in good taste for aseitleman to , speak of his wife as los "laity," or to register their names upon the books of a hotels as "John Smith and lady," or to ask a friend allow is your lady ?" This is all fashionable vulgarity, and invariably betrays a lack of cultivation. The term wife 41ifar,rivire beautiful, and apprePria'ar kid refined, **liatever may la said to the contrary. Sup pese a 'lady were to say, instead of my husband," "my gentleman," or suppose we were to speak' of "Mrs. FitrMaarice and her gentlemari."— The thing would be absolutely ludiC rim, and' its converse is none the less so ) iflightfully considered. A man's wife is his wife, and not his.lady; and' we marvel this tatter term is not absolutely tabooed in such a connex ion, at least by iiithiligent and edn fatted people: it ought to be left for the exclusive use of the codfish aris tocsiaok E 1 Merit, Londuras., with Scrofula visit the streams that have drained from the wild lands where Sarsaparilla grows. It is found that the waters become impreg nated with the medicinal virtues of this drug and the natives drink it, bathe in it, and live on it for weeks. Whatever its effects, these 'watering tlaces" have reputation not inferior to our own Saratoga, and great num bers surely obtain relief at them from the eruptions, ulcerations, and twee, which are so afflicting always to a half civilized people. Yet I find all classes have more confidence in Dr. Ayer's Extract of Sarsaparilla, than in the impregnated waters or any compound of the root that they can make. Those who can afford to buy it, do so, and it is in very general use here, curing them surer and quicker than they can get relief without it.— Not a few of oar staple products go tbutitoforeign lands, are there mani pulated by scientific or artisan skill, td then come back for our eonsump oa and use.
