Belle Boyd Again-4'6mile Spies. letter trues • Frent 'oval, dated the 12th, says,: This town is a vil lage of perhaps five hundred people. The houses are neat and cleanly, looking handsome where the ravages of war or the neglect of absolute idle ness have not rendered them almost amtenantab/e. There is one large, fine looking frame hotel yet open.— In the rear of the front building there is .a large grass plot, with flow ors anabriek walls extending through it to ,the private residence of the owner or occupant of the hotel. The whole of this interior court is sur rounded by a pleasant wooden bal .couy, Upon this at any time du ring ,the day you may pace to your heart's content, independent of storm and ounsiiine. In the evening it is jfinudrously cool, and the air sooth- Jngly refreshing. It is here that some of the most accomplished wo men in the valley assemble, with pur pose and design to pump from our young lieutenants, wbo know but lit tle of the stern realities of war, the name and number of their regiments —how many effective men their reg iment can muster, and what their state of efficiency is. These women are the most accom plished in Southern circles. They are introduced under assumed names to oar officers, so as to avoid detec tion or recognition from those to whom their names are known, but their persons unknown. By such means they are enabled frequently to meet combinedly, but at separate times, the officers of every regiment in a whole column, and by simple compilation of notes, they acquire a full knowledge of the strength of our entire force. Has modern warfare a parallel to the use of such accomplish ments for such a pupose ! The chief of these spies is the celebrated Belle Boyd. Her acknowledged superiority for machination and intrigue has given her the leadership and the control of the female spies in the valley of Vir ginia. She is a resident of Martins burg when at home, and has a pious good old mother, who regrets as much as any one can, the violent and eccentric course of her daughter since this rebellion has broken out. Belle has passed the first freshness of youth. She is a sharp-featured, black-eyed woman of twenty-five, for care and intrigue have given her that appearance. Last summer, whilst Patterson's army lay at Martinsburg, she wore a revolver in her belt, and was courted and flattered by every lieutenant and captain in the service who saw her. There was a kind of Di Vernon dash about her, a smart pertness, a quick retort, and utter abandon of manner and bearing, which were attractive from their very romantic unwontedness. The father of this resolute black-eyed vix en ie a paymaster in the Southern army, and formerly held a place at Washington under our government. She has undergone all that society, position and education can confer upon a mind suited to the days of Charles the Second, or Louis the Fourteenth—a mind such as Mazarin or Itichlieu would have delighted to employ from its kindred affinities. Well, this woman I saw practising her arts upon our young lieutenants and inexperienced captains, and in each case I uniformly felt it my duty to call them aside, and warn them of, whom she was. To one she had been introduced as Miss Anderson, to another as Miss Faulkner, and so to the end of the chapter. She is so well known now that she can only practice her blandishments upon the new raw lovies and their officers.— But from them she obtains the num ber of their regiments and their force. She has, however, a trained band of coadjutors who report to her daily—girls aged from sixteen up ward—women who have the commoh sense not to make themselves as con spicous as she, anl who remain un known, save to her, and are th ere fc re effective. ;The reports that she is personally linpure, are as unjust as they are un deserved. She has a blind devotion to an idea, and passes the bounda ry of her sex's modesty to promote its >-access . Sh, with all her faults false devotion to ideas, which are :A the foundation of our political and social disorders, has not yet lost the crowning virtue of woman. Report <rs who thus attack a woman, de fe..,eeless within their province, ex ceed the license which justice and fairness even allot to outlaws. During the past campaigns in the Valley, this woman has been of im mense service to the enemy. She will now, if she can. She, therefore, should beat once passed beyond our lines, sent to Richmond, and allowed remain with those with whom she deeply sympathises. On all hands women either play the spy upon the conduct of this a: my, or openly express sympathy with the rebels. Our soldiers are de tailed as guards constantly to watch over their personal safety. and over that of their property. The soldiers are uniformly insulted, and they bear it patiently. They propose that all disloyal women—those who are known to be acting as spies,or who openly boast of their treason—shall be honorably escorted beyond our lines, on the road to Richmond, with distinct and positive notice that they should not return, but should re main with their relatives at Rich- ii. t•fr= Pentwas having business with the County Treasurer am informed that be may be found at lus of dee in the Donn Mime at Waynesburg on the let and 3d MONDAYS find Tonessys of every month. .1.
