a* not ilia lam'EMOMltt The Provost Guard of Washington the other day made a descent upon 'a fublic house in that city, which was ound completely filled with boxes of Government arms, accoutrements, clothing, &c.-, to the value of thou sands of dollars. The stock consist ed of many articles of which there Was a constant demand in the army not easily supplied—boxes of Spring field rifles of the latest pattern, un used; new clothing, new shoes, non commissioned officers' swords, and 'even stretchers for hospital purposes. The most of these articles were mark ed for the Eighth New York Regi ment, "German Rifles," which it is said, belongs to Blenker's Division. The Apartment was rented to a per 'eon for storage some months ago.— The person to whom the apartment was rented is said to be a Quarter master in Blenker's Division. Short ly after this discovery, a similar de velopment was made on Ninth street. The police have for time suspected the last-mentioned place. They ob served that wagon loads upon wagon bads would be hauled there during ihe.day, and were informed that the goods were removed by night in wheelbarrows. As the house ap peared to be guarded by soldiers, they could not interfere; but having informed Captain Sherwood of the fact, he went to the house where was :found a woman, who told him that the goods belonged to Blenker's Di vision; that they were put there for safe keeping, and that her husband, wilt) was a Sergeant, was detailed to guard them. This opened the eyes of the military, and the result was the taking possession of the goods.— Sharpe's rifles, muskets, pistols, blank ets, shirts, drawers, knapsacks' hav ersacks and other articles were re tovered.• These goods were said to belong to the Seventy-third and Twenty-seventh. Regiments and to a Pennsylvania Regiment--at least, many of the .boxes were so marked. The correspondent of the Times, by whom the above facts are given, says that this is not the first discovery of the kind where the parties concerned have been said to hail from Blenker's Division. if LOAITLEY'S BOYHOOD. While he was yet a boy he was in incessant request to "tell books" to his playmates. At that early day he would repeat and declaim the longest "Arabian Night" as fluently as Sche herazade herself. A little later be would recite one of Scott's novels, story, character, scenery, almost as well as though the book were in his hand. He himself used to tell a fun ny story of a nursery scene.. For ev ery one who came to his father's house he bad a biblical name: Moses, Holofernes, Melchisedek, and the like. One visitor he called the Beast. Kind mamma, prudent papa, frowned at their precocious gjiild, and set their brows against t name ; but Thomas stuck to his point. Next time the Beast mad* a morning call the boy ran to the window, which hung over the street, to turn back laughing, crowing with excitement and delight. "Look here, mother," cries the child, "You see I am right. Look, look at the number of the Beast !" Mrs. Macauley glanced at the hackney coach ; and behold, its number was 666 !—London Atheneum.
