The lowest priced goods are not always the most economical ones to buy. For example, a high grade article at $5 might, and probably would be more economical to buy than a low grade article at 4, depending of course upon, the relation of the price to the value. Here we are offering many excel lent values. Our Thanksgiving SaJe Con tinues to Crowd the Store. "Promise is a good leader, if Performance is the wheel horse." "I never was, doctor," replied Miss ! .1 ins, with candor, "but I hope to Inn nine accustomed to the duties soon." "Well, I dare say you will If you only try hard enough. What you need Is plenty of tact and patience and power of persuasion. You see, a dentist's office Is In many respects different from any other office. Many people don't come here unless they have to. In that respect It's like a police station or a Justice court. Most people consider that having a tooth pulled Is a fearful and agonizing ex perience. You Bee, a man with a sud den raging pain In his tooth after the first 'ew pangs will seize his hat and rush recklertsly out to have the thing pulled or stopped or some thing. Then when he gets to the dentist's office, so great Is the Influ ence of the mind over the body, that his awful fear of the operation will make his toothache leave him, or he will Imagine that It has. So he will decide to put off his dreaded Inter view with the dentist. Then he sneaks away, taking with him his trade and his money. Now, that Is the kind of customer you have to look out for and to secure when he comes, and he comes often." "Secure?" "Yes; detain him until I am ready to attend to him. Sympathize with him, make hlra feel at home, tell him there will be no pain In having It out and that he ought to have his nice, white, valuable teeth examined and cared for. Anyhow, until I am ready for him, be sure that you do not let him escape." Then the dentist entered his pri vate office, where a customer was waiting. Before many minutes Miss Per kins had a caller In the outer office, "Is the doctor In, lady?" he asked. He was a young man of gentle, even deprecating, voice and meln, and on entering he cast a timid and furtive glance around, as If already meditating a bolt. "Yes, sir; he la in and he will see you directly. Tlease take a seat." Miss Perkins Bmlled persuasively. The young man smiled, too, as he dropped into a chair a snd, forced and ghastly smile that seemed to Miss Perkins a reflex of physical agony. In a short time, however, his face grew set and solemn. He begnn to twiddle his hat, move his feet ner vously and to glance at the clock. "Will It take long, lady?" he In quired. "Oh, no, not at all; lust a few sec onds. Have a little patience and courage. Don't you be a bit afraid." "I ain't afraid, lady," he said, re proachfully. "No, I ain't nfrnld but that It'll come out all right." "Do you consider It hard to ex tract?" "Extract? Why, no, lady; I don't think so. However, seeing you're new to this here office, I'll give you a tip that It's not well to allow things to go too far." Miss Perkins was puzzled. Evi dently the man was a regular custo mer and apparently he was suffering and impatient. "I I hope It does not cause you much Inconvenience," she faltered. ( "Well, as to that," he said rather gruffly, "all of tm know our own troubles. I came In hopln' to have the thing out, but well, I'll let it be for to-day." He arose and moved toward the door, but with a cry of protest she stepped toward him. "On, no, you must have It out right now! You can't go In pain like this. The doctor would he very an gry If I let you." Just then the dentist emerged from the Inner office. The young man stepped forward and presented him with a slip of paper. "For three months' rent, doctor," he said. "My dear Miss Perkins," re marked the dentist, ruefully, as he fumbled his trousers pocket, "I see you've been entertaining one of the profession unawares. Pulling teeth and collecting bills are of the same branch of art." In the Absence of His Yulct. It Is said of the late Lord Salis bury that he once had to dress at breakneck speed for a levee, and In the absence of his valet plunged at a heap of things and threw them on as they came. He appeared at court In the coat of the elder brethren of Trinity house, the trousers of a dep uty lieutenant and a hat of the royal archers. Putting on the finishing touches before the mirror, he hung his sword upon the wrong side and gartered himself about the wrong knee. He had assumed a waistcoat made In days when he was of less ample girth, so that between the hem of this garment and the waist of the trousers was a gap which all but himself observed. Formation of Itaiiibows. A fine rain and a strong sun are necessary for the formation of white rainbows. The phenomenon Is due to the optical principle known as inter ference. If the drops of water be very small, the Interference of the rays causes such a complete overlap ping of the colors that the bow ap pears white. The various prismatic colors, Instead of being thrown out separately, as in the ordinary prism, are thrown one on top of the other, and the light Is cast by the sun on a shoet of rain. This result Is still more noticeable where a fog takes the place of the rain. I'roup Ciiri'ri mid n Child's Kile PSnvcd. Two Million Inhabitants and Scarcely Any Fires; About 3 a Hay. For a city of more than two mil lion inhabitants Vienna certainly en joys an amazing immunity from fires. The report of the City Fire Depart ment, Just Issued, shows that the to tal losses from fire In 1906 were less than 20,000. The department cost the city about 60,000. In all there were 1,169 (ires, an average of a little more than three a day. Of these thirty-seven were classified as large, 156 medium and 976 small fires. Thirty-four were In public buildings, 426 In private houses and 109 in the streets. The small total of the aggregate loss is due not only to the activity of the fire department, but also to the very solid construction of all build ings In the city, public and private alike. While practically the whole population live In flats, It Is seldom that a fire will extend beyond the ap artment in which It breaks out. Fossil Relics of Voting. "Ballot," as generally used, has wandered far from its original mean ing of ' little ball." Even "black balling ' Is no longer necessarily lit eral. Language has several fossil .relics of primitive methods of vot ing. Mosi famous is "ostracism," which peri etuates the memory of the "ostrakon," the potsherd or shell up on which the Athenian citizen voted for the banishment of a too promin ent personage. Another Instance is "spondulicks," the slang word for money. A "spondulos," properly a vertebra of the spine, came to mean any round thing and In particular the voting pebble or Its metal equiva lent. Tobacco (Jrowlng In London. Until a few years ago the Philip pine Islanders held their Sunday on the day which was Monday to the inhabitants of the neighboring island of Borneo. This curious anomaly arose from the historic fact that the Philippines were discovered by Span ish voyagers coming from the east around Cape Horn, while Borneo was discovered by Portuguese coming from the west, and sailors lose or gain a day, according to their direc tion in crossing the Pacific. Wasps prey on flies a fact which Is well known in Italy. On any sum mer or early autumn day In the Tus can country parts, when the lunch eon table Is blackened by flies, one may see a wasp sail in at the open window, select a fly, roll it over, curl It up and carry It out into the sun shine and soon return for another. An interesting novelty that has been recently Introduced Into tie German army Is a revolver whU'h fires Illuminating bullets. The weap on has the general appearance of the regular service revolver, h it Is larg er in calibre nnd in general dimen sions. The bullets, after being fired, became highly Illuminating. , The discharge is practically noiseless; the bullet rises about a hundred yards and has a range of about the same distance. Wherever the bullet a llghts the landscape is lit up as bril liantly as by daylight for about half r minute. This enables attacking troops to reconnoitre effectively, and readily to detect the presence ot an enemy. On falling to the ground or on buildings these illuminating bulleis do not set fire to combustible objects, and they are therefore not dangerous to uso In localities where f.re might be as dangeroiiB to the at tacking troops as to the enemy. At present they have no light, and work for three or four hours in cold water and intense darkness. All they are able to do at present Is to grope around, move the big boulders with crowbars and scrape up the smaller stuff from the bed of the river, emptying ! Into a large Iron bound wire drum, which takes about half an hour to fill. (it'l'iiian a Jolly Good Fellow.
