President Writes to Senators Metcalf Reviews Combined Fleets Pennsyl vania's New York Tunnels Har mon Nominated For Governor Mon ument to Mark First Oil Well. One me'e body was added to the death roll of the Bella Guinness farm, near La Porte, Ind., making a to tal of ten corpses and skeletons ex humed In the yard besides the four bodies found In the ruins of the farm house that burned on April 28. Cor oner Mack at first announced that the grave opened contained one complete cadaver and several hones of a sec pad skeleton, but in the evening he said that what he at first believed to have been an additional thigh and arm bones In reality belong to the first body recovered during the day. The body unearthed was by far the least preserved of any of the ten grew Bonie relics. In addition to usual traces or lime, the hotly showed that a less skillful hand had dismembered It. The legs had been, as usual, severed above the knee joint, but the bones were splintered. The shoulder blade was shattered In cleaving the head from the body. The skull was lying near the pelvis. During the afternoon Sheriff Smut ler abandoned the pit explored previ ously and transferred operations to a likely spot near the burned building, some distance removed from the bur ial ground thus far explored, but no results were obtained. Digging will continue. Mysterious Disappearance. Eniil Greening, a carpenter of Ok lahoma City. Okla., and his brother Frederick, a painter, both of whom worked lust summer on Mrs. Guinness' Indiana farm, told of the mysterious visits of a dozen men to the home of Mrs. Belle Guinness and of their more mysterious disappearance. End! Greening said: ".Mrs. Guinness receiv ed men visitors all the time. A dif ferent man camo nearly every week to stay at the house. She Introduced them as cousins from Kansas, South Dakota, Wisconsin and from Chicago. Most of the men that came brought trunks with them, but they rarely took the trunks way." Greening siiid that preceding the mysterious disappearance of a "cous in" he was sent awsy by Mrs. Guin ness on some errand. When he came back he was told the "cousin" was gone. "In the llnht of what has happened, I believe that many niuvdcrs wore dono under my nose," said Greening. President Asserts His Supremacy. Three members of the senate have received letters from President Roose '.a't within the last few davs declating his supremacy, as commander-in-chief, In all matters referring to the con trol of the army and navy. The let ters have created Intense feeling in the senate, and It Is not unlikely that they will precipitate a conference of Republican members. The letters In every case are In de fense of his course In discharging without honor the negro soldiers he believed to be guilty of "shooting up" the town of Brownsville. Tex., and his action in banishing Colonel William F. Stewart to an abandoned military post In a desert section of Arizona. The third letter came on Friday to Senator Stewart of Vermont. A few days ago during the debate on the Brownsville case Senator Stewart asked a question Indicating that he had doubt as to the wisdom of ex tending to the president the power of passing on the innocence or guilt of ex-sold lers applying for reinstatement In view of the fact that It appeared the president Bf 111 believes all of the negroes to have been guilty of com plicity In the affray. The senator was surprised to re ceive from the president a letter bear ing on both the Colonel Stewart and the Brownsville cases. Attached to the communication were letters to Senator Raynor and William Alden Smith, the one to Mr. Raynor assert ing chiefly the president's right to deal with nn officer in such manner as he pleased, as coinniander-lii-chier, while the one .to Mr. Smith was confined to the Brownsville affair and reiterated tho president's belief that he had dealt with the case as conditions de manded. The president went farther still In Ms letter to Senator Stewart, in ad dition to repealing much that he said to other senators. He declared that Senator Stewirt, from the question ho asked In the debate, appeared to be proceeding under a misapprehension of the duties of the president of the United States in connection with tho army and navy. lie quoted the law t ho umlerstood It, and denied Hint he was under any obligation to give to the discharged negro soldiers or to Colonel Stewart a..y court of Inquiry. Several para graphs were devoted to a discussion of Colonel Stewart's case and the faults of his which have put him In disrepute In army circles. Judson Harmon For Governor. Democrats of Ohio in convention nominated Judson Harmon, formerly attorney general of tho United States under President Cleveland, for gov ernor mid endorsed William J. Bryan and Instructed the Ohio delegates to tho national convention to vote for him for president. A complete stato ticket was nomin ated, former Governor Jiitnes 10. Camp bell of Uutlcr cciinly was endorsed for United Slates senator and dele gates ;.nd alteinales at large to the national convention were selected. Natl j.ial Issues were left to the Den ver convention and the platform adopt ed dealt solely wllh state questions, at tacking the administration of various Republican state officers and endors ing especially the initiative and refer endum In state and local legislation and the fixation of franchises.
