It has just turned a century since the first boat was propelled by steam. Tbere was not a complete locomotive in existence tben nor a mile of railroad track. But the pendulum of time has swung rapidly forward witbio the last two generations The railroad, the telegraph, and the telephone have revolutionized the commerce and the iodubtry of the world and have made neighbors of remote people. First of all in this work of upbuilding, expansion, and devel opment comes the railroad. It is the medium gf exchange, the ageocy of transfer, and wherever it has gone prosperity has fol lowed. The Pennsylvania Railroad has built thousands of miles of track and equipped it with the best rolling stock. It has con structed or absorbed branch lines and consolidated them with its main stem, thus briogiog industrial and manufacturing interests in direct touch with all the centres of trade aud affording the people the facilities of travel in all directions. Travel is no longer a dread, it is a pleasure. ComforUble cars by day or night drawn by the best type of locomotives over a roadbed maintained at tho highest d gree of excellence, eliminate as far as possible the an Doyance of travel and make it recreative rather than burdensome. Tickets are sold at the lowest rates consistent with good manage meut and under conditions most accommodating to the passenger. The schedules of the trains are designed to meet the wishes and requirements of the greatest number of travelers, and the equip ment, both as to vehicles and employes, is kept at the highest state of efficiency. It is the object of the management to encourage travel by making it easy. Interchange is the life of the social system. Travel is a tonic to the tired the lens of observation to all. The Pennsylvania Railroad sell tickets good for a mile as well as for a trip around the world. It will plan a trip for you or provide the tickets for one of your own selection. It is a fine thing to have a great transportation agency like the Pennsylvania Railroad at your command. ) Women's Long Coats, including preliminary Examination by State Lunacy Physicians. Poughkeepale, Feb. 4. A brief ex amination and observation of the mental condition of Harry K. Thaw, now confined In Matteawan state hos pital for criminal Insane, was held by Dr. Allen W. Ferrlss, president of the New York state lunacy commission, who came down from Albany, and Dr. Lamb, superintendent of the Institu tion. The examination was of preliminary character, Thaw and the physicians talking casually together for about half an hour. After the examination jDr. Ferrlss said it was too early to .give an opinion on Thaw's mental rondltlon. He returned to Albany In company with Dr. Lamb. The examination interrupted a visit of Mrs. Evelyn Nesblt Thaw and Dan iel O'Reilly of Thaw's counsel, who came up from New York. It was Mrs. Thaw's first visit to her bus band since his arrival at Matteawan and she appeared much depresed over the situation In which her husband found himself among the Insane. Mrs. Thaw and Lawyer O'Reilly returned to New York at night. Mrs. Thaw and counsel spent over an hour with Thaw, after which they visited the various departments of the Institution. Mrs. Thaw suid: "I will not see Harry again until Wednesday. He told me not to come up tomorrow for he thought tho trip tiresome and the things I had seen to day would be too much for me to make the trip. Sirs. William Thaw is unable to come as yet, but perhaps will accompany me on Wednesday. That Is no place for Harry, in with all those Insane people. Why, the colors on the wall are even depress ing. I found Harry doing nicely and satisfied with the food hv w-as get ting, but I do not think a man of his sanity should be thrown In with those people.'' Alienists Evans and Jelliffee, re tained by the Thaw family, held sev eral conferences with Thaw during the day. It is believed here that un less Thaw Is discharged through the co-operation of the state authorities within a few weeks habeas corpus proceedings will be Instituted in the supreme court here. That Mrs. Thaw does not expect the immediate dis charge of her husband Is indicated by her engagement for two weeks of a room in a hotel at Flshkill Landing, where she will be only a short dis tance away from Matteawan. FIGHTING IN MOROCCO. Eight Frenchmen Killed and Fifty Wounded In Battle With Arabs. Paris, Feb. 4. Eight Frenchmen were killed and fifty wounded In a desperate conflict which the French forces in Morocco have had with na tives just south f Kasbah Ber Rchld. Word of this engagement was received here last night from General d'Amade, the commanding general in Morocco, who reports that a French column, commanded by Col onel Bontegoiird, was suddenly at tacked by a vast horde of Arabs while marching to the south for the purpose of punishing the Chaouia tribesmen. The combat opened shortly after midday Sunday. Thousands of Moors aeemed to spring out of the hills and sought to surround the French col umn. A fierce fight followed which lasted two hours, the enemy finally retiring with heavy loss. Meanwhile the French column was reinforced by two companies of Infantry and a bat tery of artillery commanded by Lieu tenant Colonel Brollard and after the Arabs had been driven ofT the com bined forces returned to Kasbah Ber Rrhid. The dead include Lieutenant Ricard of the Third African Chasseurs, four privates of the Foreign Legion, two Chasseurs and one sharpshooter. Lieutenant Colonel Passard was among the -wounded. It Is believed that the tribesmen who opposed the French soldiers included the Mazam bas as well as the Chaouias. 21 Soldiers Perished In Snowstorm. Ain Seafra, Algeria, Feb. 4. James Hart wick, an aged resident of Missouri township, murdered his wife with a butcher knife while Insane and then went half clad to a neighbor to whom he stated that he could not go to bed because there was blood on It. Later the body was discovered and Hart wick was arrested and lodged In Jail here. Sentenced Himself to Workhouse. Toledo, O., Feb. 4. Handcuffed and shackled, Police Judge James Austin Jr., was carried to the patrol wagon and taken to the workhouse, where he will serve a short time with the inmates for the experience to be gain ed. The judge sentenced himself to the workhouse because he wanted to learn by experience what punishment be was imposing upon others. A woman's character and powers are finest about 40. A woman has gained everything at 40 and lost nothing; she is at tho full vigor of her Intellectual powers; she has acquired experience and judgment and is not far enough away from youth to have unsym pathetic even to it wildest vacuiies.
