THE FOREST REPUBLICAN. J. C. WINK. - EOITOS ft PSOSftltTOR. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 1907. Itcpubllcan Ticket. KTATK. .State Treasurer, JOHN O. SHEATZ, of Philadelphia. C'OINTY. County Treasurer, UKORQE W. 1IOLEMAN, of Tionesta. (iet Registered. Voters should bear In mind that Sep tember 4th is the last day for legal regis tration in order to entitle them to vote at the November election. Republicans are admonished not to forgot this important duty. Better see to it at once. Resignation. TioNKsta, Pa., August 15, 1007. To the Members of the ITcpubhean County Committee of Forest County: I desire to resign aud decliue the elec tion as Chairman of your Committee for the present term. I am forced to this on account of the fact that my entire time is required by the duties of my present of fice and other engagements as well as on account of actual physical inability to properly attend to the duties expected of a County Chairman. At the same time l desire to thsuk the members of the Com mittee for the honor conferred upon me in my election to this position and to ex press my wishes for the success or Re publican principles as well as candidates Very Respectfully, Wm. Harrison. Whii.k in Wyoming Secretary Tart will have to do something to counteract that Fairbanks rescue story. It is probable that President Roosevelt will havo to stop the bay press long enough to settle the telegraphers' strike, Col. Bryan proposes to furnish the Democratic party with a platform and a candidate, and let (be convention do the rest. The latest trusts formed are steering clear of rebates because railroads are shy on the subject. But it may be remarked of trusts that few die and none resign. Onb of these days the trusts will dis cover that the constitution and laws of the country apply to them the same as to the common people and that they can not override either. President Roosevelt has issued an executive order making Labor Day, Sep tember 2, a holiday for goverment em ployes ami laborers who are employed by the day. Voters should not forget that October S is the last day on which to pay the poll tax. The last day to be assessed is Sep tember 4, and unless these formalities of the law are complied with people will not be permitted to cast their ballots under the nev slate law. States have their rights under the na tional constitution and so has every citi zen. There are means by which the just limitations can be defined without ill feeling, and those who cultivate needless friction on tbe subject are poorly em ployed. Some great English financier has made the startling discovery that tbe trouble at the present time is simply that "the demand for money is greater than the supply." There are few of us who have not, at some time or other, experienced more or less trouble along this line. Blizzard. Yes, yes, dear brother. While tbe corn crop in this section ot tbe country is a practical failure, there will still be enough and to spare In the west ern states where tbe real crops are pro. duced alter all, and where, it is predicted, the yield will exceed 2,700,000,000 bushels, about 35 bushels for every man, woman and child In the United States. That will be enough. The Pittsburg Post, commenting on the speech ol John O. Sheatz at Bern vi lie, says: "We don't doubt his sincerity, be cause he is personally a good man." And again: "They would not have nominated as good a man as Mr. Sheatz if they bad not been seated." This is the sort of compaigngufT the Democratic newspa pers of the slate are giving their readers in their effort to elect another State Treas' nrer. They admit that the Republican candidate is an honest man and compe tent, but because be is a Republican, and for no other reason he should be defeated As the State road movement develops it becomes more and more evident that there will have to be some amendment to tbe law requiring State maintenance of the highways constructed under its care and with its aid. It Is necessary to repair paved streets from year to year and it is Just as necessary to give proper attention to tbe State highways. Be they ever so good it is certain that they will deteriorate and eventually cause a reac tion against the good roads movement, unless there is proper provision for maintenance and repair. Too mauy sup ervisors along tbe new State roads are disposed to regard the work in the first instance an complete for all timo. It is unreasonable to expect these mails to be ny more durable than the paved streets, which require oonstant attention, Shar on Telegraph. It will require six years and an expen diture of $75,000,000 to construct tin Lake Erie-Ohio river ship canal. It will be 113 miles long, 177 feet wide end thirteen foot deep. As projected, it will connect with Lake Erie, at a point near Ashtabula running southward through Creek valley, the Mahoning river and Beaver creek, and join the Ohio at Beaver, Pa. It will pass through Youngstown, New Castle, and Beaver and touch scores of furnaces and other Industrial plants. Surveys have been completed, and the right of way is beln aequireu. it u iurmer stated that digging will begin early next spring For years it bas been the dream of the ore and ooal operators of the Pitts i n, iiutpint to establish a continuous r.l.r rnlltA between the great ore deposits of tbe Lake Superior region and coal belt of western Pennsylvania. Attorney General Todd Will Take No Chances on Its Being Stolen. Harrlsbure, Ant?. 20. Attorney Gen eral Todd has ordered guards to take charge of room 402 In the new Capitol, where the private papers and exhibits of the Capitol Investigation commis sion have been stored. Three men have been selected for watch, eight hours each, so that during the entire day and ulght the documents will be under surveillance. The private work of the probers was performed in this room and when the commission adjourned yesterday all the papers were turned over to the at torney general to be used in the com ing trials. The care exercised to preserve these documents is one of many illustrations that have characterized the Investiga tion as showing sincerity on the part of those In pursuit of the suspects. It is regarded here as an indication that the attorney general and his as sociates will leave nothing undone that might aid the looters. No Import ant developments are anticipated un til Mr. Todd and his assistants meet here in conference. After this meet ing the criminal indictments will be drawn and presumably presented to the Dauphin county grand jury on Sept. 23. Neighborhood Soles. The Warreo Emergency Hospital Is to be enlarged. Dr. Philip Dinsmore, the leading pby sician of Green county, aged 62, died re cently as a result of poisoning from eat ing toad-stools, mistaking them for mush rooms. His son Thomas and little niece, Opal Evans, are in a critical condition. Tbe state board of charities has declined to approve tbe latest plans for the new Venango county jail at Franklin. The objections relate to some minor details of construction which can be remedied without difficulty. The cost ofthe build ing was to have been $50,000, wbion will be increased to $35,000 if tbe suggestions of the state board of charities are carried out. A bag containing counterfeit coin was unearlhed in an old barn in Walston Jefferson county, by Sergeant Homer Cliambers, of Troop D, State Police, family which formerly lived near tbe barn, but which bas recently moved from this state, bas been held iu suspicion by tbe authorities for some time. Further search brought to light a quantity of pewter. Tbe record for rod, hook and line fish ing was broken at Conneaut Lake Tu6s day of last week, when Messrs. William Stevenson and Alex. Wright, of Green ville, landed a monster muscallonge which tipped the beam at an even 41 pounds. Tbe fish was 52 inches long and its girth at the largest psrt of the body measuaed 24 inches. A fish of tbe same species was killed in tbe lake with spear, years sgo, which is said to bave weighed 52 pounds. A dozen accidents in Erie county of which automobilists were the cause dur ing tbe past week, have aroused tbe farmers and they threaten to go a-gunning after auto drivers. Rural residents are indlgnaut and are lorming themselves into protective leagues to fight the auto mobile owuers. Tbe othernlghtaswiftly speeding auto shot by a farmers' rig on the East Buffalo road near Erie. The top caught tbe horse's bridle and tore the harness from the horse's bead. Tbe farmer jumped to catch the horse but be got away and ran for over a mile with the owner's wife clinging to the seat of the carriage expecting to be burled to death any minute. (iet Ready.
