F. H. Lanson, Adm'r, 'I'loiKi.-tH, Pa. A. (-. Brown, Attorney. tt-15-tlt Mis Visit to the York County Fair Will Not Be Simply to See the Prize Cattle. Special Correspondence. Harrisburg. Aug. 28. "President Roosevelt la not going to the York comity lair simply to seo the prize bulla, yon can depend upon that," romarked a well-informed Washington correspondent a few days ago In dla- usxing the president's anticipated islt to Pennsylvania next month. This newspaper man Is In touch with mem bers of the cabinet and other leading lTlcials of the national administration, and he knows the keen interest tho president aud all of those associated with him are manifesting In the com- :g election. While It is possible that at the dedi cation of the new capltol building here the president may not touch upon poll- les, there is reason to believe that in his remarks subsequently at the York county fair he will make clear his de sire for the election of a Republican cngress. It is known that the president has made a number of inquiries regarding political conditions In Pennsylvania, nd he has on more than one occasion expressed an earnest wish for the suc cess of -the Republican party In this state this fall. President Roosevelt has taken ad vantage of several opportunities re cently to arouse interest in the Repub- ican cause. Mr. Roosevelt's Dollar. Anrnt his subscription to the Repub lican congressional committee's cam paign fund, Editor Earle C. Tuten, of the nellefonte Republican, has this to say about "Mr. Roosevelt's dollar": "One of the first to heed tho call of tho chairman of the Republican cam paign committee for one dollar contri butions to the campaign fund is Pres ident Roosevelt. The president be lieves in the virtue of example and gives his dollar early with an implied injunction to all Republicans who share with him a true spirit of loyalty to party principle to go and do like wise. Undoubtedly the president's ex- ' ample will bear fruit. Its special value consists in the fact that every public act of the chief executive of the na tion commands the attention of the whole people, and that accordingly his recognition of the dollar a head idea will bring the merit thereof home to hundreds of thousands of citizens who )therwise might let it pass unno ticed. He Leads the Way. Naturally this simple device com mends Itself to the president because of the conditions which have made it necessary. In former times the great corporations were the chief donors of campaign funds, and very little money was obtained from the privates in the ranks of the political parties. Largely through Mr. Roosevelt's instrumental ity, a death blow has been dealt to the practice of collecting funds from such sources. 'Henceforward, thoreforo, the cam paign committee of all parties must look to individuals for the wherewithal to meet the heavy cost of campaign ing. There should be no difficulty on this head if it is only possible to enlist individual attention and to inspire gen erally an adequate sense of partisan obligation. It is this that Mr. Roose velt has in mind, and he has taken the one method of emphasizing his views where good results are sure to bo achieved." A State Dollar Fund. Colonel Wesley R. Andrews, of the Republican fctate committee, has fol lowed the lead of Chairman Sherman, of the congressional committee, and is soliciting one dollar subscriptions to tho state campaign fund. The radical anti-corporation declarations made in the Republican platform in Pennsylva nia coupled with the knowledge that Edwin S. Stuart as governor will see that all the party pledges are carried out, will without doubt deter many capitalists from contributing to tho Pennsylvania Republican state com mittee this year. 13ut this is to bn "a people's battle,' and the dollars of the people will brinj returns in a triumphant Republican victoiy. Fortunately, the Republican party has cleaned its household nnd has placed itself in the van of reform leg islation, thus giving no valid excuse for any Republican to desert the Re publican ranks. If Emery stands for a principle. Stuart likewise stands for it, and t'tiiiirt, furthermore, has the advantage of representing the Repub licanism of Theodore Roosevelt. Common sense is going to win the coming bnttle In Pennsylvania, not hysteria, and when tho people begin to see, ns they will, that Stuart is Republican who owes allegiance only to that which is best in Republicanism and not to Individuals, that he Is Republican who stands shoulder to shoulder with Roosevelt for the Square Ileal, they will discover only danger In the movement for Emery.
