TO KEPl'ItLICAN'S. Wo are anxious to have every Repub lican iu close touch, and working In har mony with the Republican National Con gressional Committee in favor of the elec tion of a Republican Congress. The Congressional campaign must be baaed on the administrative and legisla tive record of the party, and, that being so, Theodore Roosevelt's personality must be a central thought in thecampaign. We desire to maintain the work of this campaign with popular subscriptions of One Dollar each from Republicans. To each subscriber we will send the Repub lican National Campaign Text Book and all documents issued by the Committee. Help us acb love a great victory. Jam hi S. Shkrman, Chairman, P. O. Box 2(M, New York. Important to Republicans. The duplicate copy of registry list of voters is now hanging up, or should be at the voting place in each election district ready for inspection. Each voter who is twenty -one years of age or over should examine the registery list and see if bis name is on the registry and if not to see the assessor at once and have it put on be fore September 6th. All voters twenty-two year of age or over who have not paid a state or county tax within two years, which tax has been assessed at least sixty (60) days and paid at least thirty (30) days before election, JNovember dth, cannot vote. September 5th is the last duy to be assessed and Oc tober 6th the last day to pay taxes aud vote November 6th., 1906. Mr. Bhyan prefers two legs to liuunce. and also two to politics, one conservative and one radical. Surkly a man who has no bettor dis cretion than to write such a blundering letter as did candidate Emery iu reply to Dr. Swallow, would make a mlghtv bad Governor. Gov. Varuamam of Mississippi, who is a candidate lor the Senate, rejoices that Bryan is "the same old radical only more so.' 1 be conservative game will not be attempted iu Mississippi. According to Mr. Emery, a brewery in a iuwu is as woriuy or unsocial sup port as. is a church, hospital or school. frotnthe standpoint of a sagacious In vestor lie probably knows what he is talking about. Blizzard. A man who would get so tangled and twisted in his effoits to pull himself out of a disagreeable dilemma as did candi date Einary in trying to answer Dr. Swallow's interrogatories, can hardly be relied upon to make a safe governor. What a mess he might make of it. Tiik startling statement is made by the Department of Commerce aud Labor that more money is being taken South for in vestment iu factories than to the New England States. Four times as much capital baa been invested iu the Southern States siuce 1900 ai in Ne England. Mr. Emery drops to rather a low po litical level for a professed reformer when he, of his own accord, seeks to carry the idea that churches and breweries are of such a kludred nature that one ought to be supported just as much as the other. We do not believe that any such a posi tion will appeal to the thoughtful, sober sense of any citizen. Surely not. HkkkIs the dilemma which the Pro hibitionists are facing: "Shall they unite for the promotion of prohibition, or shall they get together for promotion of the Democratic party, whose candidates staud upon a platform which has no men tion of Prohibition principles in it? It is merely a question of holding to or cutting loose from principle, that's all. Phila delphia Inquirer. Whkn candidate Emery put the churches, the hospitals and the breweries in the same category, expressing an im partial willingness to help one and all, he exhibited a cosmopolitan spirit, certainly. But he no less surely displayed a lack of moral discrimination which will cost him the votes of some thousands of good peo ple who were only the other day disposed to support him. A 1 toon a Tribune. Says Dr. Swallow to Mr. Emery, "I am as much opposed to the Standard Oil Compauy's methods as are you, and wish to ass me you that in. lighting them I have nevor and never will build a suc cession of oil refineries and sell them out to the Standard at ten times their value and f!iht them only when they refused to buy another." The Philadelphia Inquir er wonders what Dr. Swallow could pos sibly mean by this. Somk of the leading newspapersof New ' York and Philadelphia have been en gaged for the past two weeks in discuss ing the very momon''is and absolutely pertinent question '''Can a chipmunk climb a tree?" Hundreds of persous, in cluding some eminent zoologists, have given their views on the subject, and the concensus ol opinion Is that a chipmunk can climb a tree if it wants to, but has no particular yearning for the arboreal lifo. All of which la very gratifying. Punxy Spirit. Likewise ponderously Important. Julius Simms, onco a trusted clerk of Abraham Lincoln, pleaded with Justice O'Neal the other day not to be sent to the workhouse as an babitual drunkard. Simms, who is seventy years old, once associated on terms of mutual res p. ct with many of the nation's greatest men. On the vory morulug of Lincoln's assas sination he dictated several letters to Simms. Judge O'Neal sentenced the man to two weeks' imprisonment but recommended that he be given hospital troatment in view of the fact that Simms was on the verge of delerium tremens. i hk gall ot mat man Emery is some thing awtul. In his letter of acceptance he attomps to throw a little sop to decent Republicans by the ex pression "Theodore Roosevelt, the incarnation of moral back bone, leads the way," a fact which every honest American citizen is aware of, and yet tbla demagogue caudidate accepts a nomination by a party which declares in its platform "that the only prominence which the present Republican adminis tration has attained has been achieved by a feeble and pretended application of the principles enunciated by Hon. William Jennings Bryan, the great Democratic commoner, who is now regarded as tho certain successor of Theodore Roosovelt to the presidency." Is it possible that any man who is an admirer of the Presi dent can cast a vote for such a dema gogue? Fusion Is Dangerous. Tho Lincolnite Philadelphia Press ob jects to fusion on congressional candi dates. On the sut ject it says: That there is certain to be some falling off iu the Republican vote this year is all toe more reason why there should be unity and hearty co operation among republicans in the election of congress men. It is there that the issues which distinguish the national parties are vital. Those who believe iu protection to home industries aud who wish to sustain Pres ident IV osevelt in bis energetic reform ing administration, anil believe In the policies that the Republican party stands for, will vole for Republican congress, men in November, however tbev divido on the issues and candidates of county aud state. The Scranton Tribune believes that the above is pleasing evidence I list the Press is beginning to realize the gravity of the situation in Pennsylvania. Last fall. wbon many good Republicans were fall ing into line to assist in the aggrandize ment of "Lidlifter" Berry, the tools of Democracy loudly proclaimed upon every occasion that the movement would have no effect on natioual politics. That the only object of the people interested in the success of Berry was the purification of Pennsylvania politics and the rescue of the state treasury, which, according to allegations of the reformers, bad been turned over to looters. The well known fact that Berry found the state treasury full of money aud ev erything about the department in condi tion that mndo criticism of Ropublican management impossible, has proved that the object of the Democrats who had sue ceeded in hoodwinking so many Repub lican voters was not the purification o renusyivania. it is now plain to many who could not tee it last November that the goal of tho free traders was, and still is, the national government. With the success of Berry as the enter ing wedge, followed up by the capture of the gubernatorial chair of Pennsylvania the Democratic leaders hope to elect a president in 1008 and seen re control of the house of representatives. It will be noted that the wily captains of calamity are seeking fusion only on the head of the ticket. It has been announced that the Lincoln aud Democratic state committee have "decided not to fuse on Congressmen." The Democratio leaders well know that the fate of any political ticket generally depends upon the success of the head. They know that if they can defeat the Republican candidate for gov ernor they are almost certain to capture the Pennsylvania congressional delega tion. In view of these tacts, it seems strange that any Republican can be persuaded to take the chance of casting a politically mixed ballot. Let those who believe in the policies the Republican party stands for, vote the straight ticket from top to bottom. Fusion is dangerous, save for the party that has nothing to lose. Sigcl 011 Field Booming. The operators in the Sigol oil field met with very good success durlug the past week. The South Penn Oil Company brought in another producing well on the Mary Ellen Caldwell farm that is re ported to lie a bummer, having a daily production of about sixty barrols of oil ine vvnuacK un io. also Drought In an other good well on the Winlack farm, the daily output of which is placed at forty barrels. The Jefferson Gas Co., reported in this paper recently as having obtained a good show of oil iu their well on the Charles Songer lease, but were going to drill deeper aud test the lower sand, struck the sand the latter part of last week and brought in a gas producing well with a daily capacity of over one million feet. Quito a number of add! tional wells are going down in various sections of the field, and the prospects are quite good for extending the producing territory much beyond its present limits.
