District Attorney, A. C. BROWN. Corona; Pr. C. Y. DETAR. A grafter Is reformer who is lo. A reformer is grafter who is out usually. It's generally the "trusted" clerk who gets away with flOO.000 or so. The clerk who is not trusted could uot get near the money, The Hod. lien. Tillman is wasting on an unresponsive Senate lot of material that might briug good prices if be would send it to the magazines. The French people stand by a separa tion of church and state, an idea that has worked well in the United States from the time the country was founded. Foodstuffs, clothing and camp equip age are arriving at San Francisco in such quantities as to be embarrassing. It is the first time in his whole life that Fred Funston bus been unable to deliver the goods. The pure food bill is said to be held up In Congress by people who do not waut to be compelled to manufacture pure food. Perhaps that's au influence with Congress, but it doesn't go with the country at largo. Uncle Joe Cannon passed bis 70th anniversary In looking after the House during the day, and at uight tilling the role of guest of honor at a great recep tion. It takes a seasoned veteran to stand up to these things. The Senate has agreed to a bill which provides that passes may be given to "attorneys who are employed exclusively by tbe railroads." It will be interesting to learn how many members of Congress will be able to get passes under that rule. Each of the five counties In this dis trict will present a candidate at the Con gressional conference, the date and place of meeting of which has not yet been agreed upon. Mercer will present James P. Whitla, Esq., of Sharonj Venango names Gen. John A. Wiley, of Franklin: in W-arren Capt. H. H. Cu tilings won out after a sharp contest; Elk county en dorsed Mr. W. O. Winslow, of Benezette. Forest county's candidate is Hon. Nelson P. Wheeler, of Endeavor, and we think the best Congressional timber among them all. The Induction into office ol State Trea urer-elect Berry, who was elected by the "leforin" forces, took place last week He was expected to And a horrible state of affairs in the handling of tbe State's finances by his Republican predecessors, but his own words give tbe lie to any thing of a crooked nature. He said: "So far as I can see, everything is all right, and we expect to find it so," So tbe much looked-for "mare's nest" was con spicuous by its absence. We hope Mr, Berry will leave the office at the end of bis term with as clean a balance sheet as be found it. For some while back tbe Oil City Blizzard has been booming the Smith family for Governor of Pennsylvania, making particular choice of two repre aentatives Charles Emory, of tbe Phlla, delpbia Press, and William O., of the Punxy Spirit. When it comes to the latter named we chime right in, and we decidedly refuse to go one step farther because we might fare much worse, 'William O.'sour Smith by a long shot. The Tltusvllle Herald also endorses the Smith idea, as witness the following edi torial from a recent issue of that paper: "Known in every community, honored and respected, the great family of Smith bas more members than any other In the Commonwealth. No neighborhood, how ever small, but that bas one or more distinct branches of this famous old clan, names ranging all the way from Schmidt and Smytiie down to the common every day Smith. Why not bave one of them for Governor of Pennsylvania? There's Charles Emory, editor of the Pbiladel phia Press. He is respected of all men and Is idolized by newspaper publishers He bas been Postmaster General and has occupied many positions of high respon sibllity in Philadelphia. There's William Orlaudo, editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit, whose editorials are quoted every, where the English language is written He was five terms in the Pennsylvania Legislature and two toi ms in Congress, He Is 47 years old. He is clean, honest and his people down In Jefferson county set lots of store by him. Here are two men, either of whom might bring bar mony into tbe party; either of- whom is capable and honest and free from con tauiitiation. We side with The Oil City Blizzard. Let us have a Smith for Gov eruor. He would certainly receive tbe family vole, and that would go a long way toward his election." Republican County Committw. Following are the committeemen elect ed at the Republican primaries May 6th: Clarlngton, W. M. Conn. Cooksbnrg, K. W. Maze. Redclyffe, S. T. Coon. Ouitonvtlle, H. A. Dottorer. Nebraska, M. E. Sibble. Tlonesta Twp., J. B. Een. ' Tiouesta Born, Lewis Arner. During a recent conference of Penn sylvania senators and congressmen at Washington, Mr. John Dalzell expressed the following sentiment, vlilch is re echoed by all Republicans. "Let the convention nominate. The candidato should be a good loyal Republican, a man of ability and of high integrity, and one who is not a candidate of any one man or clique of men. The people should select the candidate and be will win at the polls this fall." Such an one we think the Re publicans of Forest county have endorsed In the person of Hon, Charles W. Stone, of Warren, and if the Republican con vention will name hi in as its candidate the people will see to his election in No vember. In commenting upon the policy to be pursued at I be coming State Convention at Ilarrisburg in June, the Philadelphia Press says; It Is for lbs Republican con vention to nomiuate the best ticket with in Its choice. It will be un bossed and untraminoled. Its delegates will in large part be hottest, earnest Republicans who will come together with a sincere desire and purpose to do the best that can be done for tbe state and the party. There is every indication that it will be a free, open, uncontrolled convention which will act upon its own judgment what is neces sary to meet the high demands of the present time. It ought to nominate a ticket composed of men who come up to tbe true staudard of public requirement, and if it shall do so the rest will take care of itself.
