To the Republican Voters in Forest County: Understanding and believing that there would be no citizen of Forest County a candidate for the Republican nomination for Congress at the coming primaries on May 5th, I became a candidate; under tbe same Impression many Forest County friends have pledged me their support; learning that many citizens ofyourcoun ty feci that il should present to the Con gressional Conference a candidate from its own citizenship and tbst lion. N. P. Wheeler is -villing to allow the use ol bis name as such a candidate, therefore in dolerence to this natural feeling of pref erence for a home candidate and with a full appreciation ol the abilities, the high personal character and tbe practical bus iness qualifications of tbe Hon. N. P. Wheeler, I hereby withdraw my name as a candidate tor the Ropublican nomina tion in Forest County for Congress at the primaries to be bold May 5th next, and take this opportunity to gratefully thank my many friends in the county for their aid and encouragement during my can didacy. Henry 1J. Comings. Tidioute, Pa., April 16th, 1906. A Statement. To the Voters of Forest County, Pa.: Not, having heretofore been a candi date before tbe citizens of Forest County for any important office, although being an old citizen of the county and interest' ed in its development, I tbiuk it proper to state my position on some of the ques tions before us at this time. In tbe first place, I will state that for years I have advocated and predictod that it was only a question of time when we would have a two (21 cent per mile pas' senger fare on our railroads. I think the time is now ripe for this and if elected will use my influence and vote for a bill of this kind. As for trolley roads, will say: I thought of ohanging uiy railroad into a trolley line two or three years ago, but upou in vestigating the subject I found I could not carry freight on a trolley road under the existing laws, consequently I bad to give it up. Therefore I would he too glad to help pans a law to make this pos sible. Also, I will do my very best to get such laws passed that will be to the interest of the citizens of Forest County and the general public. It is needless for run to say that no ripper bills nor vicious legislation shall ever have my vote. T. D. Collins. . Carnegie is going to pension aged col lege professors a most worthy act. In lue meantime, while waiting for their pensions to begin the professors will hardly have the heart to say any thing ineau about Andy. Tnts year the forelgu trade of the United Stales will reach three billions. In 1H70 it was one billion, and passed two billions in l'.KH). The growth of 80 per cent, in six years is a remarkable record, and it whs achieved under the Dingley law. Eaki, Gray has restored to this coun try the portrait of Uunjmnin Franklin carried away from Philmlelphia In 1777 by his great-graud lather, (ien. The dam under construction In the Shoshone canyon, northern Wyoming, is 310 feet high, and it was necessary to cut a road sixteen miles long in granite before tbe workmen could begin their labors in tbe canyon. Won. '. P. Wheeler for Congress. By reference to the proper department In the Republican today it will be ob served that Hon. Nelson P. Wheeler, of Endeavor, Forest county, ia this week announced aa a candidate for Congress In this district. Every other county in the district has a home candidate with whom they expect to go into the conference, and tbe announcement of Mr. Wheeler will no doubt be very gratifying to a great majority of the Republican voter of For est county, who will bail with much sat isfaction the news tbat our county can and does present a candidate so eminent ly fitted In all respects for the high posi tiou of Representative in the American Congress, It will at once be conceded tbat a more worthy candidate or a better man can not be found In tbe tlve counties comprising the 28th district. He enjoys wide acquaintanceship, not alone in For est county, but throughout tbe entire dis trict as well, being known as one of its stalwart Republicans and very exten sive business men. That acquaintance ship is most favorable to him. A clean, honorable, broad-minded man of affairs, against whose personal, business or po litical career uo word of reproach has ever been or can be uttered. A geutlemau at once respected and honored for the mag nificent record be has made. Forest county has a legitimate right to have a home candidate, and with such a man as N. P. Wheeler to present she can go into tbe conference with the best assur ance that she will laud the district nomi nation, something which the county has not been honored with in all her history. The State Treasurer has collected the entire $1,030,000 or public funds in tbe Enterprise National Bank, of Allegheny, at tbe time of Its failure last October. This information was made public in an official statement to the "people of Penn sylvania," in which the Governor thanks tbe State Treasurer for the care with which this deposit when made was safe guarded and for the promptness with which it has been collected. True to predictions, State Treasurer elect Berry has disappointed his Demo cratic friends by appointing an out-and- out Republican to tbe only really fat berth in the treasury department. And, O! they were so enthusiastic for fusion and so insistent on reform regardless of party! They're singing a different tune now. Mr. Berry's action is peculiarly timely, as illustrating tbe fruits of fusion to thoBe Democrats who are trying to en gineer their party Into a combination with so-called Independent Republicans la the coming campaign for governor. Of course, it is being urged that fusion should be adopted only on the basis of a Democrat for first place. But wasn't Mr. Berry a Democrat? -Harrisburg Tel- egrph. Resolutions of Respect.
