On the contrary, he will be more likely to demand strawberry shortcake. Alt. the other details of the wedding having been sufficiently elaborated, the curious minded are now wondering bow niiii-h Mr. Lmigwotth laid the preacher for tying the knot. Maki'pctcrkrh of pipe foods cannot poMsibly have any objection to laws pun ishing the uiHiiulacliire of impure foods. Such laws will not touch tl em. And about the manufacturers of impure foods it doesn't matter. Pass the law. liY seeming to layor the meat trust Commissioner Garfield lost the favor of the public. By coming around to the side of the poople he has forfeited the favor ol the packers. He will have to fall back to ihe old plau ol carrying water ou both shoulders. After a redbot campaign in Jefferson couuty, James V. Murray waa re-nominated tor district attorney by the Repub licans on Tuesday of last week. S. T. North, ot PunXNiitawney, tbe present member, and R. H. Longwell, of Rey noldsville, were nominated for Assem bly, ti e latter gentleman being Ihe nom inee for the extra membership which Jefferson gels under the new legislative apportionment giving tbe county two members. If compulsory vaccination is such a good thing and so essential, why don't the law compel school teachers to be vac cinated, as well as the pupils. And why shouldn't the school director be vacci nated, and the patents as well as the children? And why shouldn't all tbe people who crowd Ihe theatres, and tbe churches, and the basket ball games, and the bowling alleys, and the bar rooms, be vaccinated as well as all the rest. Either compel all to be vaccinated, or none. The law as it now stands is une qual, unfair, and unjust, and is working an injury to our public schools, gays the Brookville Democrat, and there's a beau of sense in it, too. The fact that there are women who fondle dogs and buy them expensive wardrobes aud provide them with the most expensive luxuries, is perhaps not without its compensations. It plaoes these aristocratic canines in contrast with the little waifs of humanity that are neg lected by society and permitted to die among the rags of cellars and garrets. If a dog may be pampered like a princess, bedecked with diamonds and made tbe object of tenderest solicitude, how much more shame It is that a poor little child should be denied the ordinary comforts of life! Thus it may be seen that even the most exaggerated forniH of imbecility have their uses Puxny Spirit. It ia very greatly to be desired that Secretary of Internal A Hairs Isaao B. Brown should succeed in Ills efTort to compel the PeuusylvHiiia railroad to de sist Iroin its nefarious practice of requir ing a deposit of ten dollars on a twenty dollar mileage book. The mileage hook, it would seem to an ordinary observer, ought to be yours when you pay for it. Rut it appears that the railroad people sell you nothing but the contents of tire book. They do not sell you the back, and this deposit of ten dollars is to insure the return of the cover. Tbe wicked in sinuation that th Pennsylvania railroad takea this method of compelling the pub lie lo lend It ten or fifteen million dollars annually without interest is of course without foundation in fact. Just think what a calamity it would be if the Penn sylvania railroad were to run out of cov ers for Its mileage book! Punxy Spirit. The groundhog should he investi gated. He emerged from his hole on February 2, three weeks ago today, saw his shadow and retired abruptly to hla underground quarters. And the weather has been Ideal almost ever since. Com menting on this subject the Washington Post sayB: "We have always regarded the groundhog as an unmitigated humbug and tin poster. From the preposterous abortion we turn to the chronicles of rabbit ferocity aud devastation with a genuine relief. At least our Molly Cot tontail si urns the refuse of superstition and Ignorant alarm. Give a rabbit two lingers of moonshine whisky and It will spit in the face of a bulldog and then chase that astonished animal into the ad joining county. Tbe groundhog, on the other hand, is a slothful, stupid beast, void of vigor and signifying nothing. He pretends to be a clairvoyant, an oracle, and be is nothing but a meretricious mountebank." If you fuel all tired out and weak, have no energy, and suffer with a weak back, takeThomison's Iiarosma, Kidney, Liver and Bladder Cure at once, fine and 11.00. All druggists. tf ' , The Masonic Banquet. ' There are banquets and banquets, bnt very few can be compared with that given by Olive Lodge, No. 657, F. A A. M., of this place, on last Weduesday eve ning at the Central Homo. A reception was held in the hotel parlors from 8 to 10 o'clock and at tbe latter hour Ihe guests repaired to tbe diuing room, which pre sented a very charming appearance with its decorations of forns, cut flowers, ami lax, etc. The tables were handsomely decorated and tbe favors were appropriate to Washington's birtbdhy. O. O. F., gave I is annual reception and banquet last Friday nigbt, Feb. 23d. This Is one ol the Important events in the social life of the town aud is looked forward to with keen interest. About one hundred were present, including Odd Fellows, their wives and sweethearts. The reception waa held in the loitce rooms from 8 until 9:30 o'clock, when tbe Three Linkers ad journed to ihe Killmer block, where tbe members of the Woman's Relief Corps had prepared a three-course banquet. Covers were laid lor 98. Tbe tables were handsomely decorated with carnations and seasonable greenery aud candles. The W. R C. of Tionesta has an envia ble reputation for affairs of this character and this effort was made tbe bright par ticular stHr In their culinary galaxy. At the close of banquet, County Super intendent D. W. Morrison, officiating in the role of toastmaster, introduced sev eral speakers, Rev. W. O. Calhoun and Rev. Paul J. Slonaker. Their speeches w. re followed by a recitation by T. F. Ritcliey, Esq. Humor and sentiment con tinued for an hour and tbe festivities were concluded at 12 o'clock. When the Odd Fellows separated it was with the feeling that the principles of Friendship, Love and Truth had been given a new Impetus in the local lodge. Among tbe out-of-town guests were Jas. D Thomson, Mr, and Mrs. E. L. Dewoody, of Nebraska; Leon Watson, of Kellettville; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Putter son, of Newmansville; Mr. Zuver, of Oil City, and Mrs. J. G. Carson, of West Hickory. Tough Character in Limbo. Tbe following account of the arrest of King, who is now in jail in this place, was received from our Shippenville cor respondent. Quite a number of the readers of the Democrat will remember the King and Davis murder case of some years past and will be somewhat sur prised lo learn that the man King, who served a term in the Western Penitentiary for the killing of Davis, was ariested February 18 for brutally assaulting bis wife. As our correspondent learns tbe facts be used the butt of a gun on her, breaking her arm and doing ber bodily injury. He also, we understand, threat ened to shoot tbe first person who under took to make an arrest. Tbe warrant be ing given to Mr. Harrison Riser of this place, be deputized E. E. Thompson and started after the man King, Upon driv ing up to the house they saw King sitting in the room with a gun. They then drove by a short distance and on coming back Mr. Thompson covered King with bis gun through tbe window and Mr. Kiser proceeded to place his man under arrest and ornamented him with tbe bracelets of ihe law. They then started for Clarion where tbe prisoner was band ed over to ihe keeping of the Sheriff. - He was brought to tbe Clarion jail Sunday where he will await tbe development of legal proceedings.
