Champ Clark still sees the Democratic rainbow spanning tbe skies, and Is for starting out at once to get whatever is at the end of It, A New York insurance paper speaks of "the reptilo press" in connection with recent revelations. Doesn't it mean the reptile verbatim repnrt? Tbe system by which the president of a life Insurance company fixes his own salary precludes the idea that the surplus will ever lack flexibility. Jatan and Russia are now engaged In the interesting job of counting the cost of the war, and neither wears tbe smile that signities absolute contentment. The eastern Russian port, Vladivostok, is having a boom, now that the war is over, and is glad to say In reviewing the events of the conflict: "Never touched me." What tbe taxpayers of Forest county want in the office of County Commission er is men of experience, good Judgment, backbone.and above all, strictest honesty. Such men are to be found on tbe Repub lican ticket, and their names are Wolf and Agnew. The Republican ticket at tbe bead of this column is worthy the hearty support of every member of the party in the county. Each candidate is peculiarly fit ted for the office lor which be has been named by bis party, and from top to bot tom there is not a blemish on tbe ticket. Clean, honest, capable men, of mature judgment and ripe experience, against wbnm no taint of dishonar has ever rest ed, and who will do their duty without fear or favor. Do you want such to serve you T Then vote the ticket straight. The Democratic-Prohibition candidate for State Treasurer may believe be is go ing to be elected, but this confidence in the success of his campaign is probably not based on the character of tbe recep tion accorded bis candidacy in this section of the state. Here the greeting extended has been so cool as to be almost frosty, and the audiences addressed have been unusually small in size and frigid in manner. In Northwestern Pennsylvania there are no signs to indicate tbat the Republicans are not giving the entire ticket their hearty support this fall. WairenMail. Same here. Press dispatches say that the Republi can majority in Congress will not at tempt tariff revision at the coming ses sion, but will "stand pat." It is difficult to see why a party holding a "royal flush" should not stand pat. Business li booming everywhere. With wheels whirring and hammers clanking and tbe Horn of Plenty turned upside down, pouring the blessings of prosperity Into every lap, why would we be so ungrate ful and nnappreciative as to invite the in terference of the tariff tinkers? When your watch Is running all right and keep ing reasonably perfect time It Is not wise to pry into it with a crow-bar. Puuxy Spirit. , Tub Derrick puts it in a nnttdittll and bits tbe nail squarely on the head when it says: "No candidate for Statu Treas urer deserves election over the silly issue tbat Mr. Hurry has endeavored to creato over the state money and favored banks, He certainly does not Intend tbat tbe treasurer of tbe state shall keep its money locked up and retired from circulation when there Is no lmmodiate use for it. The banks that borrow money from (lie state pay Interest for its use; they give security for its sale return, and further more they keep it In circulation among the people. The contention of Mr. Berry and Mr. Castle on this question is of small matter. When the Democratic party had control of tbe State Treasury, It was empty, sure enough, and head oyer heela In debt. They were not bothered over the question of loaning the state's money, for there was none to loan." People get very tired of such petty pea nut politics and silly fault finding tac tics. If the Democrats have an Issue why don't they out with it or dry up. if 1 v7 i ANDREW WOLF. ANDREW WOLV. Andrew Wolf, one of tbe Republican nominees for County Commissioner, like bis running mate, Mr. Agnew, Is a plain, capable and honorable man of the people. He was born on tbe old homestead farm at Wolfs Corners, now Jobnlowen, just over the line in Clarion county, Dec. 23, 1S52. Here be was reared to young man hood, working on his father's farm until ready to start in life for himself. Among tbe first of bis business pursuits was tbe establishing of a general store In his neighborhood, and about 16 years ago he purchased a farm and moved across tbe line into Forest county. During these years he has followed farming and doing considerable lumbering in bis commun ity, having a mill on Hemlock creek. He has been successful in whatever pur suit he has engaged, and the main reason has been tbat he baa exercised good judgment and attended strictly to busi ness. His life has been an honrable one, and bis dealings fair and square. In tbe capacity of County Commissioner he would be tbe same as in his private bus iness, attentive, careful and capable, looking after the welfare of his con stituents and transacting their business with as much solicitude as though it were his own. LEONARD AOJiEW. Leonard Agnew, tbe other of tbe Re publican nominees for County Commis sioner has been almost a lifelong citizen of Forest county. Born In Paint town ship, Clarion county, June 12, 1843, he removed with his parents when still young boy to Barnett township, Forest county, and with the exception of a few years spent In Erie and Warren coun ties, has been a continuous resident of our county. The hearing In the case of Abraham L. English, di rector of public safety during the ad ministration of. The testimony presented tended to show that In the construction of the new smallpox hospital Inferior ma terials had been Improperly used; that Inspector Finley had reported favor ably upon the work, and thnt the or iginal specifications had been fraudu lently changed. Former Judge Gordon, who prose cuted the case for Mayor Weaver, en deavored to establish the fact that a criminal conspiracy to defraud tho city existed among the defendants in awarding the contract and In the con structlon. THE ABNER M'KINLEY TANGLE. Widow, Newly Married Again, Asked In Court to Give Accounting. Somerset, Pa., Oct. 16. A sensation was created here by the announcement that A. F. Kennedy of New York city had filed exceptions In the local courts to the accounting of Mrs. Annie Mc Kinley, executrix of the estate of the late Abner McKinley, brother of Pres ident McKlnley. Mr. Kennedy has a claim against the estate of $472.00, which he says he Is unable to collect He says In his petition that Mrs McKinley has failed to account foi $80,000 life insurance of the late Abner McKinley, and that she also failed to account for the sum which Abner Mc Kinley received from the estate of his brother William, which Is supposed to have been close to $80,000. To add to the entanglement Mrs McKinley was married on last Monday to John B. Allen of Tampa, Fla., In Rultlmore, and the couple are now sup posed to be on their way to Florida, where they will live. Abner McKinley, who died about two years ago, was sup posed to have been a very wealthy man. Did Not Agree on New Mill. Sharon, Oct. 1C. It has been learned that tho disagreement between Alex ander W. Thompson, president of tho Republic Iron and Steel company, ann John W. Gates, said to be the largest stockholder of the combine, camo about through the "desire of tho latter to build a $2,000,000 wire mill a: Youngstown to compete with the United States Steel corporation. Thompson did not want the mill, claiming It was out of line with tho ether mills of tho company. The an imal meeting will be held at Jersey Cty Oct. 18, when a new president will bo chosen. LEONARD AGNCW. that has been done for tbe upbuilding and welfare of Forest county has bis life been that be needs no Introduction to its peo pie. From youth up he baa known what it means to bustle for onesself, and dur ing all his career his deallrgs have been open and above board, with uo taint of dishonor clinging to him in any way, Mr. Agnew has been busy man all his life, never being content to be Idle, being always engaged in some enterprise tbat kopt business moving about him. His last active business was In lumbering aud boat building at Tlonesta, at which be would st II be engaged were It possible to obtain tbe timber to work upon. His loug and active business life has fitted bim admirably for such a position as County Commissioner, where his exper ience and training would be of Inestima' ble value to the taxpayers of Forest ccunty in dealing with its multifarious Interests. Those best acquainted with bim know Mr. Agnew to be a man wbo cannot be swerved from the right, and that In every official capacity he has pi oven himself prompt, upright and at tentive to the Interests of the people. A man of excellent judgment In business matters, and especially in such transac tions as are constantly brought before a board of County Commissioners. What the people want in tbe office of County Commissioner is just such men as Len Agnew and Andy Wolf. Men of experience, men of good judgment and wno win give every man a "square deal," and who cannot be swerved one iota from tbe rigbt by any one, be bo rich or poor. Above and beyond all they want honest men to serve them. The Commissioners' office in this county has In the past been wonderfully free from dishonest meu. Let tbe voters see that it is kept so. Dinner at County Home. The dinner given by tbe ladies of the W. C. T. U. at the County Home last Wednesday was another event to be re membered. There were about thirty la dies in attendance and all went with bas kets well filled. Mr. and Mrs. Paup gave us the usual welcome and did everything possible to add to the pleasure of all present. The tables were spread in one of the large dining rooms and about fifty were seated and partook of a splendid dinner. The inmates showed their ap preciation by many expressions of grati tude. A fter tbe dinner was over tbe Rev. W. O. Calhoun conducted a Bhort prayer service wherein be showed us bow little it costs to be a blessing to others, and that we should live not to be ministered unto but to minister. All were given an opportunity to speak a word for tbe Mas ter and much brightness and sunshine was brought into tbe meeting. M. Jj. Abbott, Supt. Press Dept. Cream of the News.
