Evkn the slump in Wall Street baa not affected the prosperity of the nation and the lust hope of the Democrats is thus de stroyed. It bgins to look as though Oyster Bay and Buzzard's Bay were two bays with but a single mind on the rt.ee suicide question. Thk fact that Bryan and Cleveland are both to speak in Chicago, cannot be taken as an indication that they will speak to each other. Dr. Wiley has started a crusade against tea drinking. And while Sir Thomas Lip ton was still a guest of the nation, too. Shjatok Pr.ATT of New York favors Chicago for the next Republican conven tion. For Chicago to capture the big event would make St. Louis cry aloud. Tub next Democratic national con vention will be a dramatic atl'air if Bryan is preseut and allowed to speak. He will be choked off if tlio reorganizes name the chairman. It is difllcult to understand why Eng. land should complain about what she calls the theft of a few little Polynesian Islands alter we have given ber Willie Waldorf Astor. Speculation as to the vice-presidential candidate continues to furnUh material for a lot of hot weather fclories which harm no one and earn space for the newspaper boys. The highest wage in the world is $78.30 a minute tor a day of six hours. It is re ceived by the Czar of Russia and it is doubtlul if many people would care to thread his way amid plots and dynamite bombs even for the wage. The United States has 202,471 miles of railway, or 4(!,2S8 mo'e than the Rritish, German and Russian empires combined. And the toot of tie American locomotive is heard in all clinics, quite eclipsing the morning drumbeat that keeps company with the hours. M. Herrara says "living beings are but aggregations of mineral substances and biology is but a chapter in miner alogy," In proof of which be cites the fact that Forster tried the feeding of dogs on (ood from which all mineral sub stance had been removed and they died even quicker than they would have with out food at all. The death ot Robert II. Foerderer, of the fourth Congressional district of Phila delphia, which occurred on Sunday last, leaves a vacancy in the Pennsylvania delegation which will likely be filled at the election this fall. Mr. Foerderer bad represented bis State in the last Congress as one of the Congressmen-at-Large, and was elected last fall from the new fourth district. Bryan is going to Yurrup. He may tell them mosbacks how to run their business so as to make monty out of their jobs. Should Candidate Bryan and Kiser Win. ever come to a short-arm col lar and-elbow heart-to-heart talk on poli ticks the gentle murmur of a buz saw tangled up in a black-gum knot would be a soothing symphony compared to the busy whir of strideut guttural oratory that would then and thar be turned loose on the potatoe crops of Pottsdam. A si-kcial from Plattsburg, N Y., says : "Congressman Joseph U. Cannon, of Illinois, and James A. Heineuway, of Indiana, and former Congressman Lewis W. Ernmerson, of Warrensburg, N. Y., are the guests of Congressman Joseph C. hibley.of Franklin, Pa., at bis Bummer residence at Valcour, on Lake Champlain. While the visit is of a social nature, it is understood that plans will be laid re garding the organization ol the next House of Representatives and prospect ive important legislation." Okk of the most interesting exhibits at tbe St. Louis Exposition will be the liquid air factory. A kettle of tbe air will be shown boiling on a cake of ice while "steam" Issues Irom the spout and tbe boiling will be increased by throwing a cake ol ice into the kettle. The air vurown on a iignieu caudle, w.ll make it burn more brightly, while alcohol and whisky will promptly be frozen by it htrawberries will be frozen and steel intlted by this extraordinary substance at one and the same time. A snow storm iu summer will also be produced by it, Over in Sharon they enliven life with many strange amusements, the women generally taking the lea I, says the Frank lin News. When political folding ruua lugli the fair sex are right in tbe thick of the fight and when there is nothing else to do they get together in secret society meetings or ruain on" into unexpected place's in excursion parties. The latest is a picnic which they arranged under tbe management of a secret society, at which all men were barred out and the women present went in for athletics. The fat women phiyed their lean sisters a game of base ball and defeated them by a tcoro of seventeen to five. Tbf n the tat women raced each other and after that the leans went iu to break the record for foot rac ing. Then tbey tried foot ball and after that went home happy. Home four hun dred were preseut aud declare they will meet again next year. If they will let the men sit in the grand stand they will be able to charge five dollars each for tickets and make several thousand dol-lais. American Municipal d'ovcrumeiit. Much as has been said about the rotten ness of municipal government, the truth seems to be that badly governed cities aud towns are the exception and not tho rule in this country. The fact that sev eral of our leading cities have been badly governed. New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburg, St. Louis and Chicago has somehow created a widespread belief that municipal government in general is bad. The truth is, however, that most of our cities are governed with rigid ecouomy and on excellent business principles. Buffalo, for instance, is an example of a well governed city. It is a notorious fact that public improvements are made iu ti.at city cheaper than private citizens can get the same class of work done, and the atlairs of the municipality are conducted iu a manner (bat meets tho approval of tho most exacting resident. The same can be said ol the great majority ol Amer can towns and cities. A few organized gangs of grafters have turned our cities into sink-holes of municipal corruption snd we have been too eager to assume that they are all alike. The best way to siamp out publio virtue and integrity is to assume tbey do not exist. Praise, where deserved, is a duly, just as much as condemnation of known wrong is a duty. Wholesale denunciation is as un wise as it is unjust, because it creates the impression that, no matter how deserv ing, public servants will receive no credit, and will be classed with the wicked and prolligate. Tlio greatest stim ulus to both public and private virtue is proper recognition. runxsuiawney Spirit. How I.Yiidiintr Van be Avoided. Ly noli in, 8 in England are unheard of. No one ever thinks such lawlessness possible over there. Nor is it, and there is very good reason for it. Justice, swift aud sure follows upon the heels of a crime. The people know this. They have every confidence that there will be no failure of the courts, and they are con tent to await judicial movements, which are always rapid. Four years ago a man killed a woman and buried ber iu a trench on the premi ses of the house where the young couple had lived, Onthe27tbof last April the body was discovered and identified. This case is known as the "Moat House Mur der." Quick work was done. The proper person was arrested tried and con victed. He wan hanged the other day, three weeks after sentence bad been passed upon him. That is the way they do things in Eng land, and that is the way we should do them here. Let us have swift justice and lynchings will gradually disappear. Philadelphia Inquirer. That's a fact. The American people are the swiftest on earth, and, we believe, the slowest when it comes to dealing with the basest criminals, unless they lynch 'em. Repuesentativk Landis has a new romedy for lynching. He would have every state legislature pass a law making tbe sheriff from whose custody a prisoner is taken, lose bis position and become in eligible to any other. He would further make tbe county in which the outrage is committed liable to damages of from f l.fHX) to $2,500 to be forfeited to the heirs of the lynched. Stewart Rim. A troupe of young people under the auspices of East Hickory Camp, No. 8837, M. W. of A., proceeded over the hill to Kellettville Thursday evening and played the fascinating drama entitled "A Wood man Soldier," befoie a large audience in Andrews hall. The players were well pleased with the reception accorded them Dy tlie people or Kellettville and espec ially by the sumptuous repast furnished by Landlord Chamberlain. The people all Feemed pleased with the play, ap plauding the players at times with deaf ening applause. After the play the troupe received a cordial iuvitaliou to return at some future time. A Woodman, Weak, Irregular Painful Heart. Sometimes the heart grows irregular is the seat f pain and pressure. People are apt to think it due to some organic or structural disease of that organ, when the cause is comparatively simple a weak ned motor power a trouble wholly due to the nervous system, perhaps aggra vated by a nervous dyspepsia. Put the nervous system right give it strength and tone supply thiough its medium the heart witli power and the stomach with digestive juice and the trouble fades like snow in a summer sun. It is for this wonderful power Dr. A. W. Chase's Nerve Pills are world famous. Mrs. J. 15. Mc Far lard, of South Street, Clarion, Pa., says:-"I like Dr. A. W Chase's Nerve Pills very much. My heart, due to a weakened nervous system was irregular I was generally depressed and nervous not sleeping well. The Nerve Pills acted splendidly giving me strength of nerve regulating the heart action enabling me to sleep well and generally giving a feeling of health and energy. In the eighteenth century it wits a greater evil than it Is now. A writer In the Cornliill MagaziiiL' tells some Klorlos to illuFlrute tho old condition of things. Iu Edinburgh in 1700 the Society of Clerks enacted that ull servants should be forbidden to take tips and members be forbidden to give thorn. This exam ple was followed by other clubs and societies. Today there la the rule in most clubs against feeing tbe nervants. An eccentric Irish gentleman, Lord Tuiiffo, used to attend his guests to the door, and if they offered any money to the servants who were lined up with the guests' burgage, the host would suy, "If you nive, give it me, for it was I that did buy the dinner." A well knowu colonel while sitting ut dinuer inquired the names of the host's servants. "For," said be, "I can not pay them for such a good dinner, but I should like to remember theiu in tny will." Another eccentric gentleman, after patiently redeeming Ills bat, sword, cane and cloak, to the very bottom of bis purse, turned to the two remain ing servants who were waiting obse quiously, each with a glove, und said affably: "Keep those. It ia said that with u blow of its wing a swan can break n man's leg, and I have no doubt this is so. A doctor told me one day, as we stood together by the zoo lake, that one of bis first cases bad been that of a man whose arm a swan had broken with its wing. "The accident occurred in Arkansas, on Swan lake, u body of water where these birds abound. A huntsman was 'lire hunting,' when n swan, making for the light, flew straight nt his bead. He put up his arm to shield his face, nnd the powerful wing of the big white bird struck bitu like a club. Roth bones in the forearm were broken; it was a compound fracture. "If a swan accidentally can break lu this way a man's arm. there is, in my opinion, no room to doubt that it could, if it desired, break with a well direct ed blow a man's leg." Philadelphia Record.
