I am directed by the Republican State Committee to announce that the Republi cans of Pennsylvania, by their duly chofon representatives, will mei t In con vention at the opera house in the city of Harrisburif, on Wednesday, May -7th, l!H):t, at 10:30 o'clock . in., for the pur pose of nominating candidates lor the following ollioes, to-wit : tine poison for the ollice of Slate Tieas urer. One person for the office of Auditor General. Two persons for the office of Judge of the Superior Court. In accordance with the rules governing the organization, the representation in the State Convention will be based on the vote polled at the last Presidential elec tion. Under the rules each legislative district is entitled to one delegate for ev ery two thousand votes cast for the Pres idential Electors in lflOO, and Bn addition al delegate for erery fraction of two thousand voles polled in excess of one thousand. liy order of the Republican State Com mittee. M.S. Quay, W. R. Andrrws, Chairman. Secretary. KqiublUnn Counlf Couiniiltec Meetinc. A meeting of the Republican County Committee of Forest county will be held in Hip rooms of Republican headquarters in Tionesta, Thursday evening, March 19, 1903, at 7:30 o'clock. All members of the Committee are requested to be present at this meeting as business of importance to the party in the county will come up, Among other things the fixing of a date for holding the Republican Primary Elec tion will be di cided. Wm. O. Morrow, Chairman. Evks the anti-anarchy bill wits the sub ject of Democratic antagonism and delay to the extent of defeat. Democratic Sinators might have known that if tbey didn't ratify the treat ies Teddy would keep tbem in "after school." The antracite coal strike commission is approaching the conclusion of its labors. Its recommendations are awaited with greatest interest. Democrats may as well go on voting for Cleveland as anybody : it is pathetic, to think of what the party would do if Cleveland should die. It is said a United States Fish Com mission expert ha decided that fish can hear. This may make fishermen more careful of the s'ories they tell. What Brigandage is in Greece and Eu ropean Turkey ladronibin seems to be in the Philippines. These bands are not composed of "patriots" but taudils. There is no danger that the Monroe doctrine will not hold together until those five new battle ships are finished, and they will prove powerful bracers. The proposal to nominate John Mitchell, president of the United Mine Workers, for vice-president on the Dem ocratic ticket is a characteristic piece of demagogy, Ik Senator Morgan keeps talking on into the extra session, it is time to warn bun to beware the ides of March. He may be the provoking cause of cloture in the Senate. It will be pretty bard work to convince the workinguien whose wages have been almost universally raised in the last two years that they want a change in political parties next year. A sew canard, that the Agricultural Department at Washington is tryiDg to produce a breed of featherless fowls is coins the rounds of the press. There is no truth in it, it is needlss to say. Mast leaders of the Republican party are opposed te tariff reviston. Tbey be lieve It would prove inimical to the inter ests of the country, would destroy pros' perity and precipitate bard times. The Republican members of Congress are generally satisfied with the anti-trust legislation enacted and so is the Presi dent. If it is demonstrated that more is necessary, there will be further action, Kx-JtnxiK Henderson, ot Mcadville, was on Monday appointed Judge of the Superior Court to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jude Porter. Gov ernor Peiiuypacker had decided on Ibis choice several days ago. The appoint ment eivcp verv general satisfaction in the western part of the State. On Wednesday United States Senator John P. Jones, of Nevada retired to pri vate life after a continuous service of thirty years in the Senate. This equals the service of the famous Thomas H. Benton of Missouri, who served five con secutive terms. Only two men liavo served more than thirty years iu the up per bouse of Congress. They were John Sherman, orOhio, and Justin Morrill, of Vermont, w ho served thirty-two years. Only one of the senators who began his career with Senator Jones in 1S73, has continued in service since. The excep tion is Senator Allison, of Iowa, who on Wednesday entered upon his sixth term, ami being still In good health gives prom ise of rounding out thirty-six which would break the record. Thk Pittsburg Chronicle - Telegraph righteously Bays: "One of these days, perhaps, the Senate of the United State will perceive the ridiculous position in which its own rules place it, and will Change those rules to permit the trans action of busiues. Tite spectacle of Sen ator Morgan forbidding the people of the United Slate to go ahead with the isthmi an canal would be amusing were it not exasperating and humiliating." The Washington Post says anew Smith is among the lawmakers. He is William O. Smith, of Punxsutawkey, Pa. A gen tleman of very comely address, Mr. Smith was on the Hoor Wednesday, ac companied by Representative Jack, his predecessor. A little loss than two dec ades ago Mr. Smith was a printer in the Government Printing Office. lie toiled there for several years, but in 1SS4 left ror Pennsylvania, and since then ha become proprietor of a newspaper, eventually drilling into politics and to a scat in the House of representative s. The ballot bill introduced as a Repub lican party measure removes the objec tions urged against the present ballot and at the same tune preserves to the voter the convenience ot a party ballot. The names of candidates appear only on -e, but a place is provided in which a voter can make bis cross mark lor his party ticket. He can in addition vote separate ly lor uny candidate, and if such candi date is not on the party ticket tho group vote is not invalidated, but is counted for all offices except that to which the candi date particularly voted for was nominat ed. The only way in which a voter can spoil liis ballot and make it ineffective is to cross-mark opposing candidates for the same ollice. It does not seem possible to make the ballot any simpler so long as the official ballot system is retained. If the legislature now in session adopts this plan it will have fulfilled its duty in that particular. A bill increasing the pay of some ol the present pensioners passed by the re cent Congress will interest a number of our ex-soldiers in that it gives them an increase of about $10 a month. It pro vides that those who have lost one hand or fool, or been totally disabled in the same, shall receive a pension at the rate of $40, Heretofore they received $30. Of these there were 3,303 in April, 1902. Those who have lost an arm at or above tho elbow, or a leg at or above the knee shall receive a pension of $i() a month. Of these on the same date there were'2,3,'7 on the pension rolls. Those who have lost an arm at the shoulder or a leg at the bip, or where the same is such condition as to prevent the use of an artificial limb, $T5 a month. Of these there were in April 1902, 1,724 pensioners. Those who have lost one arm and one foot, $00 a month. There are but 17 of these. The pension of those who have lost both feet shall be $100 a month. There are but seven or eight of such pensioners on tue rolls. L. 0. T. M. Social. The drill and shadow social last Tues day evening was a success. All the seats and a greater part of II, e standing room in A. O. U. W. Hall were taken up by the Lady Maccabees and friends. The drill by sixteen ladies was beau ilully performed. For fifteen minutes the drill d team held the closost attention of the crowded hall. Every act and turn show ed careful training by the captain. As the captain left the floor with her team the applause was continued until the last member retired. The shadow sale arranged for the occasion was carried out in a credits1 le and interesting manner f.15 was realized from the evening's en tcrtainment. The ruling if additionally remarkable because of Ch fact that the men who shot down theit companions aie allowed to give- theit version of the affair. Public sentiment is fast supporting the farts brought out at the coroner's verdict, and th federal officers are being sharply criti cized for suppressing the an 'sted minus. Coke Trade Improving. Rather the railroads are making a determined effort to bettei their service". T'.ie limited movement of cars has be?n accomplished with less difficulty during the past week than during February. Partly respon sible for this has been the mild weath er conditions, always a factor In coke shipments, and the supply of empties furnished the operators. Ferry Boat Sunk.
