In all the great cities of the United States Ihe suffering of the people on ac count of the lack of coal is very great, and many instances of death from cold are reported, and the worst feature of tho cae is that money cannot secure the fuel even at the greatly advancd rates. We who enjoy the comforts of an abundance of natural gas cannot form an adequate idea of the sufferings caus d by the coal fa. nine. The following from the German is equally true in English: At 10, a boy thinks he knows more than his father. When he is 15 he thinks, "Well, I know just about as much." At 20 he tLinks he knows again as much. When be comes to be :S0 ears old he thinks that ho ought to ask his fathei's advice sometimes. At 40 he thinks that his father does know a little more. At 50 ho looks for bis father's advice. At 00, when ills hither is dead, he "omes to the conclusion that there was not a smarter man on God's earth than his father was. Marleuvillo Ex pro a. Leon Watson, Superintendent of the S, A T., inf rms us that another new and heavier engine has been ordered lo meet the demands of the increasing freight business on that road. Owing to the laige demand for engines and ordois ahead, the manufacturers could not promise deliv ery for some months, but w hen it comes it will b.i quite an addition to the motive power of that road. Sheffield Observer. The Observer lurther states that while most of the rsil roads have been snowed up at times during the storms of the past weeks, the T. V. Ry. and the S, A T. trains have been run almost on schedule time. The management of these roads believe that the proper thing is to make arrangements to keep the track open. Farmers In Washington county have just discovered themselves to have been the victims of a gang of swindlers. About a month since a half doen men put up at ohm of Washington's leading hotels, rep resenting themselves as traveling sales men. They canvassed the rural districts hurriedly, taking orders for clothing at a very low price, in the nameof lhe"Crown Mail Order House," of Cincinnati. They demanded, and, in most instances, re ceived about ono-third the amount of their sales cash in advance, wh eh they claimed was a necessary guaiautee that the purchaser was acting iu good faith and would accept the goods when deliv ered. Now it transpires that the whole scheme was a swindle, no goods ever having arrivod or the men hoard of. We don't believe the (armors In Forest coun ty would be so "easy" as that. The Allegheny River Improvement Association held a meeting at Foxburg on Tuesday. II. E. Wilson made an ad dress on 'Resources and Possibilities or the Allegheny Valley." During his ad dress he made the statement "If all the coal in the Allegheny valley between Pittsburg and Foxburg was sold at a profit ol 2.) cents per ton, the amount re-alix'.-d would be sufficient pay to off the National debt." Hon. A. W. Smiley also mado a stirring address. Ho poiuted out tbe needs of electing Congressmen In the Allegheny valley who would look after its inteiests and advocated that such men should be voted for regardless of politics. Coin in tines wore appointed to interest Senator tjuay in beliall of tho valley. The raising of the bridges spanning the Allegheny was discussed for several hours.
