Sheriff Stewart made haste to barricade the building and pro tect the prisoner. Soon an angry mob of several hundred men gathered, but As- istnnt Attorney-Oeneiiil Mat M. Wliit taker appeared and made n speech urg ing them to assist him iu allaying excite ment and upholding the majesty of the law. He promised to reconvene the grand jury today to indict the negro promptly and have him tq dily tried nt the pres ent term of court, assuring the crowd thnt his conviction nml legal execution were a foregone conclusion.
