Rkpuulicaks, forgot not your duty
next Tuesday. Be early at the polls and
vote straight. It's not a good year for
splitting your ticket.
Thr county will have a good Jury
Commissioner in Levi G. Reynolds. He
will be elected and will acquit himself
with credit to the county.
Ihk events of the past ku.. - . .
South Africa have spoiled the criticisms
of the Democratic faultfinders in regard
to the conduct of the war by the McKin
ley administration. British losses in
Africa iu this fortnight have been as
great as the American losses in Cuba and
the Philippines in an entire year of fight
ing, and utterly destroy the opportunity
for complaint which Democratic scolds
wero ntiliring for temporary political
effect.
Mr. Crkasv, Democratic candidate for
State Treasurer, says in his speeches that
if elected to that ftice, be w ould scruti
nize with the greatest care all bills pre
sented Tor payment and see that no lllo
gal salarios were pal !, or anything of that
sort. Mr. Creasy knows that this is tne
business of the. Audit -General's depart
ment, and that all the State Treasurer
has to do with such matters is to honor
the warrants of the Auditor-General
Mr. Creasy krows that be cannot assume
the functions of the Auditor-General, and
yet he is willing to feed his hearers on
that kiud of nonsotise. An honest man
should not practice the art of deception,
which is lying by indirection, for the
purposoof winning votes. A man who
professes to possess the very desirablo
qualification of honesty in the superla
tive do, ree, ought to begin by being
honest In his statements. Punxsy Spirit.
The Democratic search for sn issue is
still in vain, but the party has several old
ones that it would like to get rid of if it
could be decently managed.
Don't forget that next Tuesday will
be olection day, Republicans. Got out
the voto and stand by the' ticked,
which is composed of capable, honest and
safe men.
A voTi? for John II. Robertson for
Prothonotary, Ac, is a vote to retain in a
very important oil ice one who has shown
grea'cst litnoss for the position for which
his partv has nominated him.
Vote for Harnett, Brown, and Mitch
ell, a Stato ticket that for excellence in
its composition has never been beaten,
and which will compare most favorably
with any ever placed before the voters
of Pennsylvania.
BurcK Crawford, the Republican
uomiuco for Associato Judge, will make
a very acceptable man for tho place. He
has no opposition for the ofllce, and tho
peoplo will be satisfied with hii record
when his term is finished.
Tnu County Auditors' oflico will bo in
good and safe hands with Jas. R. Clark
and George L. King on the board. Both
nro competent accountants, and blest
with good judgment. They will see that
every dollar of tho peoples' money is
properly accounted for.
Republicans, let 0110 cross (X) in tho
circle at the top of the rirst column rut
your ballut do tho business this year,
Your ticket is as good as any which the
opposition has in tho field, and tho prin
ciples for which your candidates stand
are infinitely better than all others. Vote
your ticket straight.
The serious illness of Vice President
Hobart is gravely lamented by the poo
pie of the United States who have grown
tu regard him as a most noble man. His
physicians hold out little hopo to his
friends and his death is almost hourly
expected. The country will deeply feel
the loss of sucn a splendid man.
The official ballot in this State next
Tuesday will contain seven full Stato
tickets, viz.: Republican, Democratic,
Prohibition, People's, Socialist-Labor,
Union Reform and Bryan Anti-Trust, the
last named being identical with the Dem
ocratic. An 8th column on the ballot
will be blank foi the accommodation oi
persons who may desire to vote for peo
plo not on any of the other tickets
'.'The responsibility borne of duty can
not bo evaded with honor. We aro in
tho Philippines; our flag is there. The
first requirement the indispensible re-
quirement is peace. No terms until the
undisputed authority shall be acknowl
edged in every foot of territory of the
archipelago. After that, then Congress
will make a government under the sov
creignty of the United S.ates." Presi
dent McKinlcy, at Milwaukee.
"TnKREismuch political rot iu the
constant parading of the term, imperial
ism. I do not believe such a thing is in
tended, possiblo, or desirablo, nor is such
a result necessary to secure such com
mercial expansion as wo want. Coin
mcrciai supremacy is tno gout of every
civilized nation, and is only attained
tli rough commercial progress and com
mercial expansion." Senator McLaurin
of South Carolina (Democrat).
Give your loyal support to John W
Jamieson, the Republican nominee for
Sheriff. He will make a faithful public
oflicial, being thoroughly fitted for the
jiosition. John deserves the earnest sup
port of every Republican in Forest coun
ty, for he him always been a true blue
member of tho party, and from boyhood
has supported its principles. He should
and we believe will, be elected by arous
ing majority. His canvass has been
clean, honorable and gentlemanly. Don'
tan to give Dim your wnoieiiearteu sup
port next Tuesday.
When you voto for Chas. M. White
man and James II. Morrison for County
Commissioners, you will make no mis
take. It is tho part of wisdom for the
taxpayers to retain a member of tho old
lMard in oflii'd. ono who is familiar with
tho work already begun, and it Mr,
Whiteman's casn there is little fault to be
found with his oflicial acts, if wo would
bo fair in our criticisms. The Cotiiinis
sinner's oflico is perhaps the most dill)
cult to fill and please many peoplo, yet
Mr. Whiteman's acts have been open and
aloveboard, with an eye single to the
best interests of tho taxpayers of the
county. Mr. Morrison will make an ex
ceptiotially good Commissioner, bavin
had a large experience in affairs which
interest the people. He has been a pro
nounced success in the management of
his own business, and that sort of a man
usually does well when entrusted with
public affairs. Witli Whiteman and
Morrison in the Commissioners' ofllce
there need bo no foar that the important
busino s of tho county will not bo well
and economically administered.

There is a paper 'way down in Mobile,
tho Register, which hits a growing evil
square in the face. It says it the fashion
prevails of bewailing our Nations effort
to maintain the dignity of the flag in tho
face of the enemy, we will have to revise
the sayings 01 those who onco were Nat
ional heroes, and ask our children to
study them iu the following shapes :
" 'Give up the ship.' Lawrence.
" 'Bo sure you are right, then apologi.e
for it.' Davy Cro-. ket.

Judge Lindser Partially Sustained.
Forostry Cammissioner Rothrock has
received word that the opinion of
Judgo Liudsey, of the Warren county
court, iu declaring unconstitutional the
act of March 30th, making constables ex
officio fire wardens for the extinction of
forest fires, for the reason that the title
did not state bow those who are called
out to suppress forest fires are to be re-
numerated, has in part been leversed by
the opinion of Judge Rice, of tho Super
ior court. Judge Lindsey, however, is
sustained by the higher court in ruling
that when a man is employed by a laud
owner to protect property against forest
fires that neither the owner uor the labor
er can justly claim compensation from
the state or county. Ilarrisburg Tele

Thanksgiving I'roclnmatiou.
The President has issued the following
Thanksgiving proclamation :
A national custom dear to the hearts of
the dcodIci calls for the sotting apart of
one dav in each vear as an occasion of
special thanksgiving to Almighty God
for the blessings of the proceeding year,
This honored obsoryanco acquires with
time a tender significance. It enriches
domestic life. It summons under the
family roof the absent children to glad
reuuion with those they love.
Seldom has this nation had greater
cause for profound thanksgiving. No
great pestilence has invaded our shores,
Liberal employment waits upon labor
Abundant crops have rewarded the ef
forts of the husbandman. Increased
comforts have come to tin home. The
national finances have boon strengthened
aud public credit has been sustained and
made firmer. In all branches of indus'
try and trade there has been an uno
qualod degree of prosperity, while there
has been a steady gain in tho moral and
educational growth of our national char
acter. Churches and schools have flour
ished. American patriotism has been
exalted. Those engaged in maintaining
the honor of the flag with such signal
success have been in a large degree
snared from disaster aud disease. An
honorable peace has been ratified with
foreign nation with which we were at
war, and we are now 011 friendly rela
lions with every power ou earth.
The trust which we have assumed for
the people of Cuba has been faithfully
advanced. There has been marked pro
gress toward tho restoration of healthy
industrial conditions, and under wise
sauitery regulations the island has en
joyed unusual exemption from the
scourge of fevor. The hurricane which
swept overjour now possesssions of Porto
Rico, destroying the homes and property
of the inhabitants, called forth the Instant
sympathy of the people of the United
States, who were swift to respond with
generous aid to the sufferers. While the
Insurrection still continues in the island
of Luzon, busiuess is resuming its activ
ity, and confidence In the good purposes
of tho United States is being rapidly es
tablished througout the archipelago.
For these reasons and countless others
I, William McKinley, president of the
United States, do hereby name Thurs
day, tho 30th day of Novum bar next, as a
day of gcuera! thanksgiving and pra er,
to boobsorvod as such by all our peoplo
on this coutiuont and iu our nowly ac
quired islands, as well as by those who
may be at sea or sojourning in foriegn
lauds, aud I ad viso that on this day re
ligious exercises shall be conducted iu
the churches or mooting places of all de
nominations in order that in the social
features of the day its real significance
may not be lost sight of, but prayers
may be offered to the Most High for
continuance of the Divine guidance
