The Republican primary election of Forest county will take place next Saturday afiemouo between the hours of 2 and 7 o'clock. Chairman Evans has forwarded all necessary blanks and tickets to the several members of the county committee whose duty it is to see that they are at the different polling places in ample time for the opening of the board promptly at 2 o'clock. The Republicans of tho county should turn out tn a man. at the primaries and cast their vote for the candidate of their choice, thus the ticket will be oue which all can cheer fully support in lha full as the free aud untrammeled selection of the party. Don't stay at home and then complain of results. Turn out and help make results. Since Dewey swiped the whole thing the Spaniards will more than ever protest against Yankee pigish uess. TnET say Commodore Dewey has been made a rear admiral. This won't satisfy the American people. Noth ing short of "front" admiral will go with our folks. In a short time we can refer to it as "the late war," and then there will be no necessity for referring to that other "lata" family quarrel. The present unpleasantness with Spain is worth all it will cost as a means of ef fectually effacing any lingering bitter ness occasioned by the civil war. Blizzard, In the Senate Monday Senator Hale presented a bill permitting Dewey to be Rear Admiral. Iu the House Mr, iioutelle did the same. The bill passed both Houses Senator Lodge presented and tLe Senate passed a resolution. authorizing the President to present a sword to Dewey aod med als to the officers and men under him who were in the battle at Manila. It appropriates $10,000 for tho purpose, Hon. W. O. Smith, who has made Punxsutawney famous by. his Spirit, and has served Jefferson county wi h distinguished ability in tbe State leg islature during the past four sessions, has now shied his castor into tbe Con gressienal contest in his district. He will doubtless have no opposition in bis own county, but will perhaps have to fight for the district nomination It goes without saying that Br Smith should have this honor with out a contest. In point of fitness adaptability for legislative work, aud general git-there-ativeness when aoy thing is wanted for his people, he easily o'ertops all competitors. He is not warlike in his make up, nor yet a peace-at-any-price statesman, but like some of tbe rest of us, wil promptly show his patriotism by re fusing to crowd in ahead of a good man anxious to enlist. Overshadow ing all these - qualities, however stands out boldly the fact that he is a farmer, and expects this very season to have tbe best garden patch in Punx'y, for he has hired an expert to handle the spade aud hoe while he furnishes the science and the brain J. 11.1 M aner aw me secret to a tarmer s success. We trust the good people of the 21st district will nominate our talented friend Smith. Had we th doing of it, he'd wiu hands down. rarsjCTOBY. The Great Naval Commander Absolutely Destroyed the Entire Spanish Squadron in Manila Bay, and he has com plete Command of the Situ ation. WORLD'S GREATEST NAVAL BATTLE The anuouncetnent in Washington nf the arrival of the revenue cutter McCulIuch at Hong Kong came to tho Navy Department io a cablegram contaiuing simply the word "Mo Culloch" and signed Bruno, the name of the commander of the ves sel. It reached the Navy Depart-j ment at 4:50 a. in , Saturday. Followiog this came cable dis patches from Commodore Dewey. Io brief Commodore Dewey states that he has silenced the batteries completely, that he cut the cable himself and that be has the bay and everything else completely at his mercy. He has, however, been un able to take possession of the towo of Manila for lack of nieu. Tbe vessels ho destroyed wen: Isla de Cuba, Reiua Christina, Castilia, Antonio Ulloa, Don Juan de Austria, and the Velasco, all cruisers; El Cann, Gen eral Lazo, Marquis del Duero, gun boats; Isle tie Mandauao, an armed transport. It is said at the Navy Department that its advices show that Dewey's forces were not sufficient to make a landing, but that this in no way in terferes with tho complete control be exercises over the city and its fortifi cations The second dispatch from the com modore is as follows : Cavite, May 4. I have taken pos session of naval station at Cavite on Philippine Islands. Have destroyed the fortifications at bay entrance, pa roling garrisou. I control bay com pletely and can take city at any time, lbe squadron in excellent health and spirits. Spanish loss not fully knawu, but very heavy ; 150 were killed, including captaiu of Reina Crislina. I am assisting in protecting Spanish sick and wounded; 250 sick aud wouuded io hospital within our lines. Much excitement at Manila. Will protect foreign res idents. " Dewey. In this great battle only six of Dewey's men were slightly wounded, and his fleet suffered very little dam age. The Spauish loss in killed and wounded is thought to number fully 2,000, their own reports makiog the loss 628. Such a record is without a parallel in the annals of modern war fare. It was the boldest of bold and daring undertakings for the plucky I'Oinoiouore io eoier a narnor so i . . . fraught with danger, and face an en emy so treacherous and formidable. Only the coolest of cool beads could think of such a thing, aud (o show that such was Dewey's condition it is only 'necessary to state the fact that after the first eogagement with the desperate Spanish squadron and shore batteries, in which he sent them reel ing, bleeding, burning and sinking be calmly retired to the opposite side of the bay aod the whole partv quietly rested and prepared and ate breakfast, after which they brushed up and went at it again, this time cleaning up the job, and, raising tbe American flag over Manila s harbor. Ob, Dewey! thou art a gem. Tho German Press. If the Germau newspapers reflect the sentiment of the people of that country on the question of tbe His pano-American war, then the Ger -man people are woefully misinformed as to the facts. If it would be right for a big, strong man, to stand off and natch another big, strong man kicking and beating bis starving children, without offering a word of reproof, then it would be right for the United htates to refuse to interfere in Cnba. There are higher laws than the laws of nations. Tbe laws of love aod humanity, which are God's own laws, transcend all others. Treaties, preceueuts and constitutions are mere technicalities when compared witn the sublime principles o; kind uess and human liberty. The Ger man press imputes to us all sorts o selhsti and bate motives,, and puts fcpain in the position of an innocent and outraged nation. A nation that has produced so many broad-minded philosophers and brilliant investigal ors as Germany, ought to know bet ter. 1 he test of humanity and relig ion is found in a compliance with the divine injunction "feed my sheep." lbe Cubans are starving, physically and intellectually. A people held in bondage, even if well fed, must be come depraved. We have intervened in Cuba to prevent the extermination of a people imbued with the spirit of freedom, and to restore liberty and law and love and life, to lbe most fer tile island on earth Those German nowspapers which are discoloring and distorting tbe facts, and leading the people of Germany to believe that we are . nation of bullies, who would wantonly increase the miseries nf poor, deenpit old spam, are committing i crime against the progress and civ ilization of the age. If the people nf Germany were correctly informed, it is impossible that they should sym pathize with Spain Punxy. Spirit. All Ejes Xow on Sampson. lbe news n the complete wiping out of the Spanish squadron at Ma nila is hardly read, until the Ameri can people turu their attention to other quarters for fresh laurels, and all eyes are now turned toward Ad miral Sampson, who is hourly expect ed to meet Spaiu's roost formidable war fleet at Porto Rico. Oo this eo gagement the probable length of tbe war largely depends. Should Samp sou be anything like as successful as Dewey at Manila, the war will have practically ended, though Spain may hold out for some time, and tarry on a sort of guerrilla warfare. But we must not expect too much of Samp son, as we are apt to io the light of victories just achieved. It must be remembered that the SpnuUh fleet is not much, if any, less formidable than the Americau. The greatest differ ence after all is io the men who will man the guns and direct the engage ment, and on this the Americans rely the most, as the Spanish fleet is said to consist of seventeen war ships, while ours has but seven, and some of the former aie in about the same class as our best ones. And so all eyes are now on Samp son aud his brave boys SAMPSON'S FLEET. Admiral Sampson's two big battleships are equivalent to any four vessols the Spanish may have iu Hie viciniay of Porto Rioo. There is considerable con jootureas to the ships Sampson is ex pected to fight to-day and it may be, that none of those reported to have leit Cape Verde, had any intention of crossing the Atlantic Sompson'a two best vessels, the Iowa and Indiana, are each of over 10,000 tons displacement and have a speed of about sixteen knots an hour. The Iowa has four 12-inch, eight 8-incli, six 4-inch rapid tire, twenty 6 pd., besides four machine guns and six torpedo tubes. The Indiana's armament is very similar, except that she carries four 13-inch guns aud seven torpedo tubes. These vessels are heavily Armored and are expected to stand the brunt of the fighting. The cruiser New York is as big as the Via caya, and a good deal swifter. It is only lightly protected and carrlos six 8-iuch, twelve 4-inch rapid-fire, eight 6 pd.t four 1 pd., and four machine gum. Sampson's other cruiser the Montgomery, has two 8-inch, four 4-inch, four 6 pd., three 3 pd. and two machine guns. The two moni tors, the Terror and the Amphiirite are each of about 4,000 tons displacement and each carries tour 10J-inch and four ma chine guns. Tho torpedo boat Mayflower has a speed of twenty knots an heur and carries two 5-inch guns in addition to the usual torpedo tubes and smaller guns. Tbe Spanish squadron that is now probably in Porto Rico harbor, consists of the Infanta Maria Teresa, the Alrai- rante Oquendo, tho Cristobal Colon and the Viscaya and tkree torpedo boat de stroyers, the Furor, the Pluton and the Terror. All four cruisers are of Nearly the same displacement, 7,000 tons and carry about tho same armament. Each one is armed with two 11-iucb, ten 6 o 8-iuch Honoria guns aud from twelve to sixteen guns of tbe smaller type and from four to eight toroedo tubes. They are all very swift vessels and oould easily keep out of reach of our battleships and monitors if they chose. Seventeen Span- isu vessels nave Deen reported as hover ing about Porto Rico but it is not at all probable that tbe actual lighting force of ot tne squadron is much greater than given above. And it may be that Spain is still pursuing ker old tactics and keep ins her fleet within easy reach of Madrid. la that event Admiral Sampson's squadron will have to hurl itself against the lortitications in San Juan harbor. His entire fleet, with tbe single exception of the New York are full iron dads, cov ered with nickle-steel Harveyized plate. Nine incites of this is more than equal in resisting power to twelve inches thick ness of the older armor of tbe Spanish vessels. The engagement will be awaited with the greatest interest. It will give Amer ican gunners their first opportunity of hurling tbirteeo-inch shells, at a modern fortification. Upon Admiral Sampson's success depends the speedy termination of the war. If Porto Rico is subsided, there will be little necessity for Havana making a fight of it. Spain may en deavor to opposo a treaty of peace but it will be only a short time, before she is compelled to succumb. Derrick. We want heads to fit 1,000 Miles fe Armstrong's. hats at It Jfotice.
