When Uncle Sam is bamboozled out of ten or twelve millions of dollars there is certainly no good reason why au effort should not be made to ascertain how the hold-up was accomplished. Blizzard. Mr. Depew will have a chance to say something memorial when he un dertakes, on May 7, to seud a mes sage around the world with electric ity generated by Niagara Falls. The sentence of eight words will be sent by way of England, Portugal and India, to Australia, returning to the room in which Mr. Depew is seated via Cape Town, Portugal and Brazil. It is thought that the rcund trip of the epigram will occupy only a few minutes. During 1895 we imported 20,748,. 108 pounds of shoddy, more thau during any other year, while in 1892, a year during which the Republican tariff was in full operation, we im ported less than 300,000 pounds. Then the American people bought and were able to pay for good honest clotb, woven from American wool and spun in American mills. Now they are wearing foreign shoddy and are compelled to buy it on credit. Burlington Jlawk-Eye. One thing that helps to deplete the gold in the Treasury is this: Under the new tariff. American merchants are buying some goods abroad that tbey formerly bought here. It takes gold to pay for them. But the cold shipment is not all; these goods take toe place ot the products of Amen can labor. Under this plan the Europeans get more work to do aod the Americans less. He da clared bis innocence of all murders with which he was charged, but ad mitted bis responsibility for the death of two women, who died at his hauds "as the result of criminal operations." The public takes more stock in his first confession, in which he tells about murdering 27 persons, and there will bo a general feeling of re lief that we are at least done with the greatest, because' the most re morseless, criminal ot the age. Since the year opened 16,000 Ital ian immigrants have arrived in this country, and 15,000 are waitiog for transportation at the Italian seaports. Of the thousands of this nationality who reached New York last week several hundred were returned be cause they were without the few dollars required to prove that they would not at once become a publio charge. There is something wrong at the Italian ports when the steam ships accept the last dollar of immi grants, knowing that they will be sent back if the laws of this country are executed. It is hard to say what a consular Bervice is good for uuless it can impress immigrants with the fact that tbey cannot land in Ameri ca without complyiug with the regu lations. Under the Harrisou Administra tion the revenues ot' the Government, brought iu under the operation of the McKiuley law, were not ouly more than sufficient to meet the current ex penditures of the Government, but, under the wise administration of the Republican party, the excess was ap plied to the payment of the national debt, and more than 8200,000,000 of the uatioual debt was paid off. Not ouly that, but the Kapublican party turned the ireasury over with $107, 000,000 in gold aud nearly 840,000,- uuu oi other money to the incoming Democratic Administration. What has been done by the Democratic party or the Democratic Admiuistra lion since it came into power? In stsaa on paying oil any part ot our uatioual debt, tbey have increased our nalionat debt to the enormous sum of S2G2.315.000 iu a period of little over three years' time. This imposes upon the people of this coun try an indebtedness in interest aloue of 81 1, 4112,010 over and above th other expenditurs that we bad under a Republican Administration. This expense comes year after year, aud these 8202,000,000 are a mortgage upon the people ot this country ex teudiug over a period of thirty years. SHERIFF'S SALE.
