Pa., February 24th, 1894. To the Republican Electors of Pennsyl vania: I am directed by the Republican State Committee to announce that the Re publicans of Pennsylvania, by their duly choBen representative, will meet in State Convention at Harrisbtirg, Pa., on Wodnesday, May 23, at 11 o'clock, a. m., for the following purposes to wit : For the nomination of candidates re spectively for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, two members of Congress from the State at Large, Auditor General, Se cretary of Internal Affairs and lor the transaction of such other business as may be presented. Attention is called to the rnle adopted at the State Convention ot 1893, providing for the basis of repre sentation as follows: "Representation in future State Con ventions shall be based upon the the vote cast at the Presidential or Gubernatorial elections immediately preceding, one delegate being allotted to each legislative district for every 2.000 Republican vetos and an additional delegate for a fraction exceeding 1,000 votes, each district to have at least one delegate." By order of the Republican State Com mittee. B. F. GlLKKbON, Chairman. i If iul . T T. T A. D. Fetterolp, Secretaries. Oalusha A Grow in Congress tried to amend the pension bill so as to make the minimum pension given any pensioner $12 per month. That ia very little, but it is mucb more than most of them get now. It ii a pity that Mr. Grows amendment did not go through. ' Petroleum remains unprotected in tariff bill reported in the Senate. The Hub-committee was expected to restore the clause in regard to oil, but the oil men are doomed to disap pointment. The committee bad fa vors for sugar and other Southern in dustries, but nothing for Pennsylva nia. It might be worse, however. That tariff bill hasn't passed yet, Franklin News. The N. Y. Tribune recalls the Democratic bard times of 1837 and 1857, which our older readers will re member, when it says that "The na tion is going over the same old Dem ocratic road toward bankruptcy which it wearily and sadly trod many years ago. Prostration to borne in dustries comes first, then demands for the return of many hundred milliuns of foreign capital invested or loaned here, then shrinkage of Government revenue and issue of bonds with dif ficulty, and iocrease of the public debt and heavier burdens for the peo ple. It is not a road which the peo ple enjoy. The extraordinary upris ing in Pennsylvania shows what the pecple think of it. Nor is it strange if dissatisfaction and iudignation sometimes lead men to acts of disor der, as in Massachusetts." Henry Hall, the Washington correspondent of the Pittsburg Times, tells this story: A manufacturer call ed on Senator Hill to-day in great distress. He said he was a member of the Tariff Reform society, and was manufacturing wire rope. Under the Wiison bill theie is but a slight re duction in the tariff on the iogotB from which his wares are made, while the rate on the finished product is greatly decreased. Thus he was get ting bit both ways. He said that wheo running he employed 600 men, but now he had only work for a score, "That," said Senator Hill, with cool sarcasm, "is the way the tariff is re vised by statesmen actuated by prin ciple aloue." There are a great many tariff reformers engaged iu manufacturing who have been as bard bit as the gentleman who called on Senator Hill. Led away by the specious reasoning and false promises of the Democratic free tiaders they cast their lot with the parly that is now raiding their industries and tbey are gaepiog with fright aud quaking with fear.
