L. 8TROUP, of Jenks Township, as a can didate for Delegate to the Republican State Convention. Republican Mate Convention! Headquarters Republican State Committee, 1231 Walnut street, Philadelphia. Pa., February 24th, 1894. To the Republican Elector of rcnnsyl vania: I am directed by the Republican State Committee to announce that the Re publicans of Pennsylvania, by their duly chosen representative, will meet In State Convention at Harrlsbarg, Pa., on Wednesday, May 23, at 11 o'olock, a. in., for the following purposes to wit : For the nomination of candidates re spectively for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, two members of Congress from the State at Large, Auditor General, Se cretary of Internal Affairs and for the transaction of such other business as may be presented. Attention is called to the rule adopted at the State Convention of 1893, providing for the basis of repre sentation as follows : "Representation In future State Con ventions shall be based upon the the vote cast at the Presidential or Gubernatorial elections immediately preceding, one delegate being allotted to each legislative district for every 2,000 Republican rates and an additional delegate for a fraction exceeding 1,000 votes, each distriot to have at least one delegate." By order of the Republican State Com mittee. B. F. GlLKEbON, Chairman. Attest: J ere B. Rex, A. D. Fetterolf, Secretaries. Chvikman Wright says that the reason the Republican majority was so large in Pennsylvania was because the Democratic vote did not come out. Nonsense. A great deal of the rote was out, aud it was cast for Grow. The State's cash box is very nicely filled with a snug balance in the gen eral fund. At the close of buaioees on February 28th there were $4,942, 979.47 in the Treasury to pay de mands, all available at a moment's notice, and the State, with what she has in the general fund, could pay off every cent of debt she now owes. This a most encouraging condition of affairs, and shows that when honest officials of the good old Republican party are placed in charge of the fi nances they are sure to be well han dled, and the State come ont ahead. Grow's majority of 187,000 is ac cepted by most persons as smashing the record of majorities in Pennsyl vania, but it is a mistake. The larg est majorities ever given in the State was won by Henry S. Mott, of Pike county, as the Democratic candidate Canal Commissioner in 1854, when be received 274,074 votes agaiust George Darcy, Whig who ooly received 83, 331. Thus in a poll of 467,405 Mott bad a majority of 190,743. Demo eratie Vindicator. One of our oldest citizens, who was on the ground at the time the above remarkable feat was accomplished, says it was not wholly a Democratic majority, but rather that Mott was the Democratic candidate and was endorsed by the Know Nothings, hence the fearful landslide. The Philadelphia correspondent of the New York Sun, who seems to be equally al home in the camp of the Regular Democracy and the Pennsyl vania Democracy, as well as the White House, says in a recent die patch : "When Mr. Cleveland was iu formed that the Republican or aoti-admiois tration, majority was 135,000 greater than bis Pennsylvania cuckoes had assured bim it would be, in the words of an esteemed friend of his, 'the old man was mad all over, and was reck less in the use of emphatic words to express bis feelings, bucb is the re' port brought back frpm Washington by Pennsylvanians who canuot lie. The Keystone cuckoes are awfully flustered. They fear that a ringing of their necks will soon take phce." This would teem to be a confirms- ation of the leport that the necks of J. Marsh Wright and John R. Reed are in danger, and that they will not be confirmed by the Senate. We doubt very little whether Cleveland would shed aoy tears if both were turned dowu. The Republicans can almost make the Sauate uoaoimously Republican if they try next fall, remarks an en thusiablic exchange. The fifteenth anniversary of the Carlisle Iodian School yesterday was observed in a fitting manner, aud the Indian boys and girls who graduated, acquitted themselves just as well ai that many white pupils graduating from any institution of learning of the same grade. It is astonishing to think how the wild, untamed, untu tored and uncouth Indian child is taken charge of here, given an edu cation, taught useful trades, and made a man or woman of, fit to fight the battles of life, and if those who do this good work have no other monu ment than the noble character they have moulded, it would be enough. The way to civilize an Indian is to give him an education and a trade, and be will do the rest. Many of the artisans turned out from the Carlisle School are as clever as the best of the white mechanics and hold their own with any of them any time. Harrit burg Telegraph.
