The members of tbe Republican CouDty Committee of Forest County will meet at the Sheriff's office Tio nesta, Pa., Monday evening, (court week) May 15, 18U3, at 7:30 o'clock, fur the purpose of fixing a dale for holding the Republican primary elec tion, and to transact such other busi ness as may be necessary. A full at tendance is requested. Amos F. LedebcR, Chairman. Tionesta, May 1st, 1893. The sole and belt leather manufac turers now have a combine with $120, 000.00 capital. And this in tbe face of Cleveland's inaugural protest. Such disregard of the warnings of tbe Chief Executive is perfectly repre' hensible. Mrs. Depew, wife of Cbauncy M. Depew, died at her residence in New York, at 12:30, last Sunday after noon. Although seriously ill forsoiue time the sudden termination of her illness was unexpected, and her hus band ha& since been postrated by the shock. The killing of Carlyla W. Harris by electricity, at Sing Sing, for tbe poisoning of bis young wife, took place Monday. The case has excited pub lic interest from start to finish. It is believed by many that the condemn ed man was inuoceot, although the evidence against bim was strong and quite conclusive. His stout deuial of guilt from tbe first is doubtless what has led many to believe him in noceut. That champion liar, tbe New York World, says there is a big row brewing between tbe Harrison and anti-Harrison factions, and that it is likely to burst forth at tbe Republi can League meeting in Louisville this week. As usual the World prints wbat it would like to see, and not what is likely to come to pass. There are no Harrison and anti-Har rison factions in the Republican par ty. There is a Republican party, but it is not split up like the Demo cracy into Tammauy, Whitney, Mug wump, anti-snapper and various other factions. This will be seen when the result of the next election is an nouoced. Ex-Senator John J. Inqalls is writing up Chicago and tbe Fair for a syndicate of newspapers, and what he says is well worth reading, even i one does not agree with tbe great vitriol elioger. He draws this pen picture of Chicago as it is at present "The last municipal administration was ostensibly one of decorum and law, but there is no European capital wnere vice ana crime are more in aoleotly and shamelessly audacious than here, nor where there is more security from immunity. Highway rouDers ply their vocation as danner ly as Dick Turpiu at Blackheath Sluggars and saudbaggers rob their victims in the heart of the city Burglaries are so common that they nave ceased to attract notice, l ick pockets, thieves, fakirs, crooks, buoco teererg ana green goods men are holding carnival." This is the feast to which Carte Harrisou and his merry crew of municipal bigrands invites the world civilized and uncivilized, the accept auce of which iuvitation involves the carrying of one's life iu one's bauds In an attempt by some people to "gel square," nn inveftigaliou of the Warren Hospital was ordered by the legislature, based upon allegations of bad treatment of a man named Peart, who, when he had the oppor tunity of having his caso heard by a committee, declined to do so upon the ground that the committee had no authority to subpevua witnesses. Wheu a thin excuse such as this moves a legislative body to appoint an investigating committee, the dis interested are excused, if they believe that some other motive than that of the public good is back of the ap pointment. It is a satisfaction to learn that Governor Tattisou has promptly put his foot ou the "resolu tion," and giving the legislature to very emphatically understand in his veto message, that he doeso'l believe o wasting money in investigating charges that have already been branded by a competent committee of honorable men as false, libellous and defamatory. Persons who make charges of a sensational character like the ones referred to should bo held strictly responsible for their utterances, and if found to have no reasonable grounds for their charges should be made to suffer for their fabrications. This would curtail a heap of nonsensical investigation and save a big waste of the State's reve nues. Trailed in the Dust. Hon. Chatlcs W. Stone, the able and talented gentleman who repre sents Warren in Congress, was one of tbe speakers at tbe Republican tariff club banquet ill Pittsburg, and re plied to the toast of "The United States." In tbe course of his address, aud it was just such an one as a man of Mr. Stone's ability can make, elo quent and patriotic, he referred to ur great and growing population, saying this incidentally : "Two months ago, when a Republi can administration raised tbe Ameri can flag and extended -American pro tection over the beautiful aud fertile Sandwich Islands, we regarded witb satisfaction the probable and peaceful acquisition of these gems of the Pa cific; and yet since that time we have added to our population twice tbe number of people we would have gained by the acquisition of thone islands. I-.ven since a confederate Democrat hauled down tbe stars and stripes at Honolulu, this Nation has gamed by natural growth aB many people as the Sandwich islands con tain." This was a shot direct at Cleveland and Blount, but Mr. Stone is a man of courage and does not hesitate to say what he thinks. Tbe hauling down of the stars and 6tripes in Hon- ololu by a Confederato Democrat, at Cleveland's request, will never be sanctioned by the people of this country. llarrisburg Telegraph.
