Very likely the Democrats of Peooijlvauia will toon begiu to feel gratiGfd if Mr. Cleveland does not give the offices in this State to Demo crals and Mugs in other States. The State Legislative has practi cally agreed to finally adjourn May 20th. The passage of this resolution has bad a tendency to hurry up mat ters, and there will likely be some work done from this on. The dedication of the Pennsylva nia building at the World's Fair has been indefinitely postponed, but the building will be there, and weary Pennsylraoians can rest their tired feet whenever tbey feel like it. It ia announced that President Cleveland will be present at the na val review on the Dolphin. We wonder that be is not afraid to trust himself 00 a vessel which bis former Administration rejected as "structur ally weak" thereby throwing its bon est builder, the lata John Roach, into bankruptcy. One of tbecurioos "come-'rounds" of politics, as the Elraira Gazette ob serves, is mat waiter u. uresnam. a Republican, commissioned in the ar my by Abraham Lincoln and a Uoi ted Slates Judge by Ulysses S. Grant, should be, as a Democrat, supersed ing Lincoln's son at St. James and Grant's son at Vienna. Mrs. Cleveland saw several hundred callers Tuesday, but the press report significantly adds: "It is understood that this is the last recep tion Mrs. Cleveland will hold this spring." This is doubtless a mistake. There will, in all probability, be at least one more reception a kind of a birth-day party. Blizzard. It is an easy matter for Mr. Cleve laud to knock out the Congressional combine no, but along some time next fall the Congressmen will assem ble around Washington and have their "innings," and perhaps it won't be half so pleasant then. Cleveland or any other President, can not well afford to be on the outs with the Con gressmeo of bis party. They're very necessary article to an admiois tration when it wants to make a rec ord on something besides turning out officeholders. A London newspaper sent a 8 pec ial commission to Chicago to report on the drainage and sanitation, with a view to learning whether there is danger of an epidemic in that city during the fair. This commission re ports that there is every reason to hope that there will not be an out break of an epidemic All of this is very gratifying, and it will help the fair in England. About the only thing that needs to be feared Chicago this year is Carter Harrison the new mayor. Lawrence Maxwell, Jk , of Cin cinnati, Ohio, has been nominated by President Cleveland for the position of Solicitor Genaral. This is the position held by G. A. Jenks at the close of Mr. Cleveland's last admiois tration, and his conferring the booor upon an Ohio gentleman is cunclu aire that as far as the President concerned he has no intention to make ao exception to' bis rule against ex officers in this case. Further there are good reasons for believing that Mr. Jenks would accept noplace at Mr. Cleveland's disposal below the raok of a Cabinet position. Brook ville Jiepullimn. Those who waul to see what the President is doing for Pennnylvania have to use a microsonpe. "What's in a name?" is answered by the introduction of the rank or title of Ambassador into the diplo matic service of the United States. Although the constitution authorizes the President to appoint "Antbassa dors" and other public ministers, yet the first title was not employed be cause some stickler for exactness dis covered that an ambassador was the personal representative of his sove reign, it was considered out of order to call the Nation's representative an Ambassador. However, as Cleve land has assumed to be a "Dictator' to Congress and to state authorities it perhaps, oot improper that he hould have Ambassadors to foreign Courts. CUUen Vcm. That distinguished Democrat, General Bragg, of Wisconsin, who loved Cleveland for the enemies be bad made, is now roasting the admin istration because he cannot get what be wants. Ha was first offered the Austria-Hungary mission, but that id not suit him, and then Cleveland sought to get rid of hint by aa offer f ibe Argentine Republic mission, but this is not what the old man was fter. He wanted the Chinese miss ion or notbiog, and as he can't have that the indications are that he will not get anything, and that is why he is hot in the collar. Mr. Bragg is a very tiresome old man, and he can go and suck his paws and growl and nobody pity him. It is probable that before he is through, he will be willing to accept an internal revenue collectorehip, and be mighty glad to get it. The compulsory education bill, which has passed the Hjuse, provides that children between the sees ol and 12 years shall attend at least for 16 weeks each year a school in which the common English branches re taught unless such child or chil dren are excused by the school board for satisfactory reasons. There is to be an annual enumeration of the children between 8 and 12 years by the assessors. The bill prescribes a penalty of $2 to (5 for each violation by neglect or refusal. It does not interfere with the right to educate children in private schools. The argument used by the supporters of the bill is that there are 100,000 children in this State between 6 and 12 years who are not seceiviog any school benefits, aDd that it is unfair to these boys and girls to allow them to grow up without some measure of education, which is a very common sense and reasonable argument. Speaker Thompson of Warren, is full-fledged candidate for State Treasurer. Ia response to a question be said: "Yes, I am a candidate for the Republican nomination for State Treasurer, and I make this announce ment in accordance with the wishes of my friends. Left to my own choice I probably would not have come out for a State office, but a publio official cannot disregard so bearty an indorsement as the mere mention of my name has brought to mo. I am very grateful for this, and I feel that I owe it to my people that 1 accede to their wishes. From Phil adelphia, Allegheny, the oil regions the northern tier and southern coun ties of the Stale I have received let ters pledging tbe support of my party frieods, and I feel that I will be well equipped to enter in tbe contest. Tb question of geographical location baa been discussed and tbe effect my nom ination might have in the selection of a candidate tor Uuvernor. loose ith whom I have consulted, together with myself, are of opinion that tbe selection of a State Treasurer will have no bearing whatever in tbe choice of a Gubernatorial candidate Two years ago I was a candidate for the nomination fur State Treasurer, and Morrison was the successful as pirant. Ad honorable defeat of that kind did not in any mauner discon cert me, and I put forth my best ef fort fur the ticket. In any event this year I will do tbe same. I expect to win, of course. -Every man expects to win who expires for an office, and I have the promises of bearty support not only from the leaders of the par ty, but from tbe men in the ranks who have sent many kindly letters with their pledges of support." Mr. ihumpsnD is a man of great ability anf popular with tbe party 10 the Slate. He has three times beeu honored in bis couoty. and twice Republican bouse has given him the signal booor of an election as hpeak er. two years ago wbeo defeated fo the nomination fur State Treasurer be gracefully bowed to the inevitable aod worked manfully fur the ticket, Should be be nomioated bo would make a strong candidate and there could be no doubt of bis election The movement to make bim Treas urer is spontaneous aod promises of I support come from all parts of tbe State. llarrioburg TtUyraph.
