Monday is the regular day for opening, but that is Labor Day, a legal holiday. The juuiors of Marienville crossed bats with the juniors of Tionesta here last Saturday. The game was a little one sided, Tionesta leading by a score of 27 to 12. To vote this fall you must be registered on or before September 8th, and your State or County tax must be paid before Oct. 8th. Don't neglect these important duties. Attention is directed to the notice of mill property for sale, by assignee S. S. Towler, in this issue. Parties looking for bargains in this line would do well to make a note of the date of sale, &c. Goorge Dawson is home from Homestead on a thirty days' furlough. He belongs to the Warren company. None of the boys are stuck on their job, which promises to last considera ble time yet. Fare for the round trip only $G 00. Postmaster Pierce of Noith East, Erie county, was circulating among old Tionesta fcieuds the fore part of the week. He reports the prospective grape crop very fine,' and thinks his firm will ship at least 50,000 baskets this season. 1 Cau'i say whether any hereabouts are interested, but here's a recent rul ing of a postmaster General: "When a female employe of a post-office changes her namo by marriage, and re mains in the employ of the office, she should take oath anew under ber new name. They expect that Beveral hundred graduates will attend, as all the alumni in this part of the country will be invited. Franklin News. Our columu8 are a trifle crowded with advertising just now, which con siderably curtails regular reading matter. We're sorry for this of course, but cau't well refuse the ads. without offending the advertisers, and to give offense to any is a thing agaiust which our gcutle nature revolts. It is often asked if the rccont trouble at Ediuboro would affect the school during the coming year. Its only i licet will be to make the author ities doubly diligent. The school will be a success. Young people will do well to avail thomselves of tlio extra udvautuges offered nt Eliuburo. About as nice a line of shoes, men's, ladies and children's as one could wish to see or select from has just been opened at Lawrence & Smearbaugh's. They invite you (o call, having full confidence that you will cot go away disappointed in either quality, style or price. It The dogs will have had their days on the 23d of this month, according to astronomers. But Tionesta, with a population of seven or eight hundred people, eould spare aboat one dog for every one of the SG5 days of the year, and then have enough howlers left to keep the borough awake seven nights out of a week. Advertising (in the right place) does pay. Yesterday rooming Dr. Rumberger ordered the insertion of a notice in the Republican to the effect that several days ago be lost a pair of buckskin gloves, etc. In less than half an hour he had his gloves back, long before the notice appeared in print. Nothing like it I Try it! The furniture wagon of Messrs. Haslet & Sons is kept busy receiving and delivering goods these days. It is a pleasure to know that our people are properly appreciating the efforts of this enterprising firm to supply the demand for a good article of furniture at very moderate prices. When in need don't fail to look over their stock. The Edinboro State Normal School opens Sept. 5, 1892. No nor mal school has better facilities. A large library, beautiful surroundings, a good museum, qualified teachers, en thusiastic teachers, thorough instruct ion. These unexcelled advantages can be bad during tbe fall terra for only $50. Martin G. Benedict, Principal Supt. Kerr is putting his house in order, as it were; that is, the house next the school building, recently va catod by Pustmaster Knox, and will shortly begin house keeping with his sister, Miss Aggie Kerr, who will thus be conveniently near her school this winter. There is some talk also that the popular Superintendent bnt that's only surmised, and perhaps we shouldn't mention it. On Saturday last, while Mrs. M Hepler was putting up fruit, and in attempting to tighten the cover on a glass jar, the jar broke and her right wrist came in contact with the sharp corner cutting her very badly, and severing one of tbe main arteries of the forearm. It was with the greatest difficulty that tbe flow of blood was checked by her physicians, and she was left in a much weakened condi tion, but is getting along nicely now The many friends of Mr. Jeared Adams and Miss Nettie Hill, daughter of ex Judge C. A. Hill, will be pleas antly surprised to learn of their mar riage, notice of which appears in this issue. Two popular and esteemed young people are thus joined, their happy hearts to be as one hereafter. May rich blessings of life's best gifts be their's throughout their sojourn here on earth, is the wish of all who know them, in which the Republican joins heartily. An esteemed friend sends us a very rare specimen in the shape of a newspaper bearing date "Uniontown, Fayette Couuty, Pa., Thursday, May 28, 1846," and is therefore 40 years old. The paper is called The Genius of Liberty, and this particular one was evidently the property of John Lara berton at one time, his name being written on the margiu at about the UBual place of address. Many quaint and curious passages are to be found in its pages, among other a proclama tion by Governor Sbuuk calling upon the people and soldiery of the State to be prepared to maintain the honor and integrity of the nation in the war with Mexico, which is then in progress. A narrative by Peter Grove of some of the exploits of Capt. Samuel Brady, the great Indian fighter, is also among its interesting contents. John W Sbugert is editor and proprietor, and his paper throughout is very readable, and must have been eagerly sought for in those days. On Sunday morning, August 7th, the house of our old friend James McGafligan, of Balltown, together with nearly all its contents was burned to the ground. The family first dis covered the fire about 4 o'clock, and set to work to extinguish the flames, believing tbey con Id do so, and fearing that to stop to give the alarm would allow the fire to get too much of a start. It was too late, however, and before assistance could reach the place all hope of rescuing the building was gone. Nothing but an organ and a few other articles of minor value were saved, even the wearing apparel of the entire family being cunsumtd, barring such as they managed to clothe them selves with in their hurried flight. Mr. McGafllgan's loss will be in the neighborhood of 8500 or $U00, and is total, he having no insurance whatever. While the blow is rather heavy upon him ho is not made of the kind of material which repines over such matters, and will soou bo a'iiiu com fortably duojiciled. A union camp meeting is booked for West Hickory, from Aug. 28 to Sept. 14, under the auspices of the Northwestern Camp Meeting Associa tion. Postmaster Geucral Wanamaker has issued a request to county-seat postmasters to repeat this year, some time between August 1 and December 15, the visits of inspection made by them last year to the other officers in their respective counties. The exper iment is said to have worked well last year, but if it was a publio benefit there is no reason why one man in each county should bear tbe entire expense of the inspection, and it should not be expected of him. lie should at least have his actual expenses paid. Tionesta had the pleasure of seeing some nice ball playing yesterday after- uoon, when the "Our Boys" of Pitts burg stopped on their way home from Tidioute where they played the day before. Outside the league games wc doubt whether a belter team is now traveling, and the game yesterday was only to give our people an exhibition of what good ball playing is, and not with any thought that we would be in it at all. Nobody seriously enter tained a notion that Tionesta would get a score and she didn't either; the nearest she got to it was twice on third base. This is one base farther than Tidioute got, although Tionesta let the visitors get a few more scores here than they got up the river, the record being l'J to U. bucu "pretty work is worth teeing. Franklin Neva : Bonj. May, Esq , came from Tionesta on Saturday to attend the funeral of his old friend, Wm. Raymond, Esq. His acquain tance with the deceased extends away back to 1823. Mr. May's father, Rev IlcZukiah May, had at that time been a resident of Franklin for two or three years, and when Mr. Raymond came in 1823 and opened a general store on the present site of the Dodd block, Benjamin entered his Bervice as a clerk, remaining for a year. The friendship then formed remained warm and unbroken throughout the long stretch of 69 years, and yesterday Mr, May performed tbo closing act in that friendship by taking his place as a pull-bearer at his old friend's funeral Although tbe junior of Mr. Raymond by about teu years, Mr. May has reached a venerable ago, and ho re sembles his friend in the remarkable retention of his faculties and his vigor, Both men lived to soe the passing away of every man who was iu busi oess in Franklin when they were in the same store together. During a thunder storm near Corry Wednesday evening, lightning struck and killed James Fenno and badly shocked his son. Fenno and his son were milking cows in a barn on tho farm of Hon. S. F.. Klneade, near Hatch Hollow. The larn caught flre and burned to tho ground. Twenty-ftvo head of rattle, several horses and other stock were saved. Iu his instructions to the Ornnd Jury of Mercer rounly, recently, Judge Mehard called attention to tho gambling that has hitherto heen carried on at county fairs. He directed the constable to promptly ar rest all gamblers who may Iw at tho next fair In that eonny, and also notified the managers that they could le held legally responsible for any loss by gambling on tho grounds. The nviny friends of W. Fd. Marsh, of Corry, will be pleased to learn that the Urand Irfxlge I. o. O. F. of Pennsylvania has presented him with a very handsome engraved gold watch and chain. The case bears Mr. Marsh's monogram. On the In side cap is beautifully engraved the fol lowing inscription: "Presented to W. Ed. Marsh, Pat (Irand Master, by the Grand Ixwlge I. O. O. F. of Pennsylvania." The latest Chicago trick Is to try to raise money by hypothecating bogus deeds to property not owned by the party who wishes to raise the monev. A scheme of this kind was nipped in the bud last week by a shrewd man who declined to pur chase until ho had traced the title, and this frightened tho seller, who has disap peared. What a happy tinio tho Chicago pooplo will have in skinning the stranger within their gates during tho World' Fail! A man will have to hire a liody guar. I to get through snfcly. Some of the newspaper throughout I ho country hsvo been chuckling in glco over tho report that the donation of $,rflo,nK to the World's Fair was made without any condition as to Sunday closing. They laugh too quickly. The appropriation act provides explicitly that "the said ex posttion'shall not bo open to the public on the first day of the week, commonly called Sunday," and if tho appropriation is ac cepted it is made the duly of tho National Commission to make such rules as shall closo tho exhibition on Sunday. That is what the people have demanded and what they propose to have. C'nmpliijr on Cliautanrp-ia.
