Senator Qnaj's Tlctories. The victory won by Senator Quay in the popular contest in Armstrong county has grown greater and more pronounced than Gist figures gave it, his official majority being 1746 in a poll of 4266 votes. The Free Pret9, which savagely opposed him, yields to the verdict with the utmost grace. It ays : "We clearly mistook the fecliugs of the majority of the party in Armstrong county to this respect, and now find ourselves so overwhelmingly in the minority that at the first breathing -opportunity after the result bad been determined, we seek a reason fur the unexpected demonstration in favor of Senatos Quay. The best and most practical solution is that be enjoys in a very large degree the confidence of his party, who remain loyal to him through good and evil report. To say that bis loyalty is confined to any class or faction of the party is to do injus tice to the Sonator as well as to bis supporters ; and to say that the result was produced by machine politics or questionable influence, is equally wide of the truth. Senator Quay has beeu a power in the politics of the State for years and be proved a snccess in the "'field of National fame of such recent memory that the party he has saved appear unwilling to forget it." IN LAWRENCE COUNTY, where the Senatorial question was submitted to popular vote, Senator Quay's majority was 1350, at the pri maries last Saturday. CRAWFORD AND ERIE COUNTIES held their primaries yesterday in which the majority for Senator Quay was almost unanimous, Crawford giv ing him about 3500 majority, and Erie about the same. Senator Hill in his Birmingham speech said of the city's growth: "Yoor triumphs here in every de partment are Ihe wouders of the world. There is no example like it afforded in the country. The place where this city stands, only a few years ago was an opon plain, and now is one of the most thriving cities of the whole South." The Senator spoke the truth as far as be went, but he should bave told the whole truth and said that all that wonderful growth was the direct result of the Republi can policy of protection to home in dustries. Birmingham's chief indus try is the manufacture of iron, and without protection the place would yet be as the speaker said it was a few years ago "an open plain." If the Senator is as honest as he claims to be, why doesn't he tell the whole truth? Some of the Democratic greenhorns in Congress have made a ludicrous spectacle of themselves in wailing over the need of free raw material to enable American manufacturers to export goods and compete in the mar kets of the world. The McKinley tariff provides free raw material in such cases and if that is all the manu facturers need tbey bave it in full measure. By degrees the Democrats are learning what the McKinley tariff really is and what it roeau. It took them nearly two years to learn that the McKinley tariff is constitutional, but when the supreme Court gave its opinion they had to take the medicine. They will catch on to the other good features 01 tne iwcrvinley tana in time and learn to like them. "1 do say that the enormous sum paid in the way of pendens is a double hardship on the people of the South," said General l'alterson of Tennessee, one of the plain-spoken ex-Confederate Brigadiers in tbe House. He ob jects to pensions because they draw money away from the South and put it in the hands of Union veteraus at the North. The more active Democratic in the House are waking up to the fact that the tariff issue is trumps. Chicago Newt. And to the further fact that the .Republicans bold most of them. Another private bill day has gone by in the House and the only pension bill allowed to go through was one for soldier of the war of 1812, now ninety nine years old. Others were choked ofT by the point of no quorum. Old hoi.dikrs who are petitioning Congress against the passage of the Bland free coinage bill can judge how much chance there is of any attention being paid to their petitions by watch ing the course of I ho House towards pension bills. JinxiK IIarkY White, of Indiana, paid a friendly visit to his old Tinnesla acquaintances to-day, with whom he met a warm welcome. The Judge is a prominent candidate for ihe Reubli can nominalion for the vacancy on the Supreme Bench, caused by the death of bis nld friend and neighbor Justice Clark, and is receiving very encour aging assurances of support from all over the State. , D.
