A new ad. for the Boston Cloth ing House, Marionville, Pa., is on band, but came too late for this issue and will appear next week. Mean time Mr. Levy invites everybody to call and take advantage of bis great bargains. The protracted meetings at the F. M. Church have been brought to a close. Meetings are still going on at the M. E. Church. The accessions to both churches have been very large, the number far exceeding any here tofore known iu either. Attention is directed to the card of Mr. S. L. Henry, the gentleman who lock Charley Walter's pkee in the meat market. Mr. Henry is a practical butcher, thoroughly under stands his business and intends con ducting a good market. His card speaks for itself. L. .1. Ilopkiugs started for the Eastern cities Mouday to lay in the Spring stock for tbo firm of H. J. Hopkius & Co. Liuuu has never yet failed to pleaso the people in the se lection of goods and bis present trip will be no exception to (ho rule. So look out for a gorgeous display. Horsemen will do well to bear in mind the Kkpuulican is prepared to print bills on the shortest notice and at the most reasonable rates. We have the iiuest cuts of any office in the county, and the largest variety to se lect 1'rtm. When you are ready to have your bills printed call and see us. Muny of our txchanges ore warn ing their readers to look out for a gang of men traveling about the country making coutracts fur painting roofs. If they offer to paiut your roof for five dollars, or any price, don't fail to ask them how much they charge for the paint they put on before you close your contract. It i in the paint where the fraud exists. Miss Louise Harrison, a most es timable young lady, daughter of Jo seph Harrison of Green township, died at the home of Wra. Tobey, iu Kiogs- ley township, on Mouday evening of lli is week. Her disease was typhoid pneumonia, superinduced by an attack of la grippe. She was aged about 20 years, and was greatly respected by all who knew her. Loojutuin Mealy, living in Tio nceta township, met with a sad loss in the death of his wife on Friday eve ning last. She died of typhoid fever. We understand that Mr. Mealy aud three of his children are lying sick with the same disease. The sympa thy of a kind-hearted community is with this s j rely afflicted family, whose burdens of grief seem almost too great to bear. J. II. Hardison still has faith in the existence of petroleum near hero, as be is puttiug up a rig ou Mrs. G. S. Hunter's property, a few rods back of the depot, and will have the drill bouncing in the course of a few days. We hope he'll strike. such a spouter as will flow nut aud grease the railroad track to such an exteut that tho com pany n ill have to establish a transfer station here for a month. The prophets say that we'll have a deligtful Spring, and Hopkiua & Co. say they'll have a stock of goods that will vie with the beauties of nature iu making people happy. And still the i "profits" will be saved to the peoplo. The somewhat famous case of E. E. Clapp vs. Pioegrove Towusbip has been settled by defendant paying over the amount claimed, without going to trial. This, says the Franklin Newt, was a suit to recover the excess of road and school tax paid by Mr. Clapp on lands in tho township by reason of a double assessment. Tbo question at issue in this case was originally raised by plaintiff in an action against Ve nango County on a similar claim for double assessment, the excess amount ing to $145 65. That suit was brought in April, 1889. A motion on the part of tho county for a compulsory non suit was granted on the ground that plaintiff was barred from recovering by the statute of limitation. A pay ment that had beou made by plaintiff in January, 1884, was held to be a voluntary act. Mr. Clapp then brought a suit again against Pinegrove Township. It went against bim. He carried it to the Supreme Court, which sent it back to the court below for re-trial, with the result Btated. By the latest census bulletin it is observed that Forest county has a population of 8,482. In 1880 we were the smallest county iu the State, numerically speaking, having only 4,385 of a population. We no longer wag at the tail eud of the kite, but have forced our neighbors over in Cameron county into that position. In ratio of increase in population Forest county takes the lead of any io the State, its percentage being 93, and once more becomes tbe banner county of the Commonwealth. It's a very cold, wet and sloppy year when Forest county don't win a bauner, but as there was none offered iu this connec tion we'll have to content ourselves simply with tbe knowledge that we'd have taken it if there bad been. For tbe past two weeks the sur veyors and engineers have been busily at work completing tbe survey on the new route for the extension of the W. N. Y. & P. railroad. The route sur veyed runs from a point near Jackson Center to Polk, passing about oue mile south of Sandy Lake. From Polk the road parallels the Lake Shore roud to Oil City. The reason the road bed is not directly extended from Stoueboro is because of the very heavy grade between here and Jackson Cen ter, and which it is desired to avoid. Supt. Fisher was over tho road last week and declares that the proposed extension will surely be made the com ing summor. Sandy Lake News. Mr. John II. Robertson, who bus for some lime past been in tbe mercan tile business in Howe township, this county, departed for Fairhaven, What comb county, Washington State, yes terday uodii, where he will embark in business. His estimable wife accom panies him, and will help to make their new home a happy one. There Are no young men go from here to the far west possessing greater pluck aud energy than Mr. R., end we predict that bis square aud upright dealing with the people in that busy country will win and retaiu him the friendship of all with whom he has to do. Our best wishes go with you, John. Tbo auditors of Howe and Tiocea la townships give to the public a very comprehensive exhibit of tbe finan cial doings of tbeir respective precincts through the Republican's advertising columns this week. Every township iu the county should do likewise. The cost is not great, in fact little more than a good ponman would charge for writ ing out a dozen or so copies and tack ing them up through the township where they are never lead and afford little or no satisfaction to the taxpay ers, who are tbe interested parties. Try it and see if you dout like it bet ter than the old dilapidated way. As to shoes! Lawrence & Sroeur- baugb lay claim to tha possession of a stock, since their last iuvoice arrived, that has never been excelled, and per haps never equalled in Forest county. The stock consists of ladies', men's and children's shoes, and for complete ness of variety, excellence of material, style of finish, aud lowuess of price, their equal is not found outside tbe large cities. They keep nothing but tbe standard makes, and are ready to stand over every pair as being just as represented. Before making your se lections call and look over thoir line. Argument court called yesterday at 10:00 o'clock a. m., with President Judge Noycs, and Associates White and Clark on the Bench. Tbe case of principal interest was tbe hearing for a change of venue ia the caso of Com monwealth vs. Edward S. Shippen, charged with the murder of Joseph W. Say. A very large number of wit nesses had been summoned on bulb sides, and, wilh the spectators natural ly attracted thither, the court room was comfortably filled. The defense called tweuty-one witnesses aud the Commonwealth twenty-three. Theen- tire day was taken up in the examina tion of these witnesses and the argu ments of counsel, pro and con. In the eveuing an adjournment was taken till 7:30, when the arguments were resumed. At the conclusion tbe court rendered bis decision, which was against tbe change of venue, and so the case will be tried in this county. On the 30 lli of this month, before Judge Noyes at Warren, tho effort to have Shippen released on bail will be renewed, the court having granted a hearing to the defense at that lime. Court is still in session this, Wednes day, morning, hearing cases set down for the regular argument term. AT TIIE n.mE. CHURCH. The services at (he Methodist Church last Sabbath evening were of an unusually interesting character. The preaching service was omitted, tbe reception of members and probationers takiug the place of the regular service. Fir.-t, Rev. Rumbergcr read from the church ritual clearly setting forth the doctrines and rules of the church. Then, 30 persons were baptized. Then, those who were to unite wilh the church on probation were arranged in a liue extending tbe full length of both aisles and across tbe church between the aisles and then not room enough. The column was set in motion and as the members composing it passed the altar they were met by the minister and official members of tho church who "extended the right-haud of fellow ship," the choir and congregalion meanwhile singing a substantial Methodist hymn. When tbe column had completed its course !J0 persons had become probationary members of the church. Then three persons were admitted iuto full membership. Six persons were also received by letter. These ceremonies over, tho pastor made a short exhortation and au altar service was held. .Surely it was a "high day" in "Methodist Zion." So far during the ten weeks that revival services have been held by the Pastor, C. C. Rumberger, here and at Nebras ka, 250 persons have presented them selves at the altar for prayers. The meetings here closed yesterday eve ii l tig. Sunday evening uext some more persons will be admitted to the church as probationers. Claringtoii.
