There is quite a scramble to see who will have the empty honor of leading the forlorn hope this fall. The struggle is between Wallace and Patlisoa, with the chances Blightly favoring the lat ter, although both are, or profess to be, very sanguine. The Republicans are giving very little thought to the outcome, as in either case it is only a matter of which makes the attempt to keep the majority below 80,000. Once more the Everhart tragedy is called to mind by the receipt of a lengthy communication from a citizen of Washington township who signs himself "Taxpayer," and after review ing the case from his own standpoint intimates that something new in the way of developments will be forth coming. A swindle has been played quite exton alvely among tbe farmers of different parts of the State lately, and they have been fleeced to the tune of $50,000. It was ac complishcd by two confederates, who pre tended to buy from them walnut stumps, Confederate No. 1 came along and agroed to buy tbe stumps, and told the farmers bis partner would be along soon to take them out and pay for them.
