One day last week word was received by friends and businoss partners in this comity, that E. H. Darrah, of the exten sive lumbering firm of Collins, Darrah A Co., at Nebraska, had been accidentally shot and killed noar Portland, Oregon, on April 1st. Friends here have been unable to learn any further particulars of the cir cumstances thus far. The Pittsburgh Chronicle Telegraph of Monday, has this information relative to the snd affair: William Dickey, of Collins, Darrah A Co., lumbermon, passed through the city this morning en route to Brookville. He had been to San Diego, Cal., with Edwin H. Darrah, of his firm, and tells a strange story. Mr. Darrah, with his family has, for several months, boen a'residont of San Diego. Ten days ago Mr. Dickey left there to return home after having learned ol his partner's plans to go to a point 60 miles from Portland, Oregon, for the purpose of investing in an extensive lumber territory. Darrah was to take with hint two Mends from the Brookville region named Hall and Doverspike. At La Honta, Cal., while en route, a dispatch overtook Mr. Dickey, conveying the information that Darrah had been shot dead. He did not learn the par ticulars of the shooting except that it oc curred on April 1. Mr. Darrah has frionds in this city of whom inquiry was made concerning the shooting. It was learned that meager word has been received here that the shooting was accidental, but that the clrcumstauces are not yet known. M rs. Blocher, of the township, writes us these facts relative to a disease that has broken out among the cattlo here abouts: "According to a description given by the State Veterinary Surgoon, the dis ease is what is known as 'Catarrhal In fluenza,' which destroyed many cattle in this county and in other parts of the State during the summer of 18S7. Cattle atliict ed decline food and drink, breathe labor iously, run at the nose and eyes, lop their ears, lose flash rapidly, and if not relieved in due time, die in the course of a week. I know from experience that a drench of two quarts of sweet milk (or less, accord ing to age; two or three times a day, is a good remedy for the disease, as every case In my neighborhood so treated was cured." Rats I "How does It happen that there are so many old maids among the school teach ers !" a teacher was asked, according to a contemporary. " Because school teachers are as a rule women of sense, and none of them will give up a (o0 position for a (10 man, was the reply. Man Is a harvester. He begins life at the cradle ; learns to handle the fork, often has rauibh ways and sows wild oats; threshes his way through the world, and when he arrives at the sere and yellow leaf, time mows him down and his re mains are planted on the hillside. One of our exchanges tells this story, which would apply in more towns than one : "Lock Haven has a boy who is con sidered a musical prodigy by his papa. His favorite instrument is a cornet, and his father has agreed to pay hira ten cents an hour for evety hour he practices while his male ancestor is absent. His mother gives him fifteen cents for being quiet, and the neighbors threaten to give him poison unless he obeys his mother." An exchange says there is a new coun terfeit 10-cent piece in circulation, which so closely resembles the genuine coin that it can be easily passed off upon the unsus pecting. It differs from the usual coun terfeit in that a genuine silver plating covers the German silver which forms the body of the coin. This gives it a "ring" very nearly like that of good money, and also does away with the groasy feeling by which most counterfeits cau bo detected. The coin bears the date of 1887. One of our leading doctors says spring fever is a fact, not a figure of speech. Well, we should say so. Get a good robust case of spring fever once and like our esteemed cotemporary, Grover Cleveland, who was once managing editor of this great and glorious Union, you will be ready to say that spring fever Is "a condition and not a theory." Spring fover is not a bold, open foe. It insinuates itself through one's anatomy and stoalsover one so speakingly that it has a hold with both hands before one is aware of it. The best cure for spring fover is a fishing-rod and bait. Lots of bai'.
