At the late session of the Erie Presbytery the ministers and brethren wrestled seriously with the question as to whether the calling of Rev. II. C. Ross, of Canada, to the First Church, of Erie, was a violation of the law against importation of laborers under contract. The Presbytery decided that it was not, aod certified the call. If the case should be taken to the civil courts for settlement it will be watched with interest. Franklin Netvi. Last Sunday's Chicago Herald con tained a two-columo article devoted to fish stories, and here's the way our friend Ben. May is given away. As to Ben's piscatorial accomplishments, we can vouch, having known him from boyhood, that he never caught so much as a "shiner" in all his born days, but if he can palm olT a good one now and then on those Chicago reporters, why we've no objection. The Herald heads its piece "One of the Lazy Sort," and says: B. W. May, the brick man, was telling bis fishing experiences to Char ley Purington and a few others a day or two ago. "It's comical to me," said he, "how people make so much work out of fishing. It's but a short time since I read that ex-President Cleveland landed a huge salmon after a three quarter hour contest. Is there auy fun in that? I fail to see it. Men are supposed to go fishing for the fuu there is in it, and not fur exercise. If they wish the latter they can hire out for woodcutting. I tell you, boys, I had a superb time up at Devil's Luke week before last ; had the best sort of luck. I hired a native to take me out in bis boat every day. He attended to all tho preliminaries aud, well, I sat and smoked and held my pole. When I would get a bite I'd hand the pole over to him and he'd pull the fish in. In this way I had the gratifi cation growing out of fishing without any of the labor connected with it. He fished with his own pole, too, so that the pair of us roped in considera ble. Of course, I had bim follow me to the hotel with tho whole batch and claimed 'em as my own, thus winning an excellent reputation as a fisherman without the waste of any energy." Warren Wrinkles. On Friday evening Mr. Caverly, a middle aged mau wanted some crude oil to use on his horses hoofs. So he took a can and his lantern and went to a convenient tank house to get some, lie didn t know iust how be could get the oil out of the tauk so he crawled in the tauk house where there was a board off and proceeded to in vestigate by letting his lantern down in the tank to see how low the oil was. The people in Clarendon telegraphed dotan to know what the fire was. He is very badly burned about the laco and hands but will probably recover as there seems to be no internal in juries. a..
