Bruce & Co. are utilizing the ice bridge at their camp to good advantage, and expect, if the weutlier continues cold, to transport a large amount ol bark to the station at Holeniao Flats. Another holiday has been added to the liit. Ou Thursday Congress passed a bill making April 30ih, the anuiversary of the inauguration of George Washington, the first I'resi dent of the United States, a legal holiday. Mrs. II. A. Adams and family who have for several years resided in Marion, Ohio, expect to move to Reed City, Michigan, this week. Their many frieuds here will wish thera pros perity and happiness in their new homo. Last Saturday night was the stinger of the season, and for on "open wiuter" it was a real James Daudy. Twenty seven degrees below zero, was what the most reliable thermometers put it, and the groundhog scored an other point. Among the prominent foreign legal lights attendiug court tais week are the following : Hun. Rasselas Brown, Col. Wra. E. Rice, Curtis M. Shawkey and O. I. Ball, of Warren ; Hon. J. H. Osmer, C. Heydrick, Franklin ; Maj. Reid, Clarion. Joseph H. Lenhart, Supreme Receiver of the Ancient Order of United Workman, aud oue of Mead villa's roost prominent and highly es teemed citizens, died of congestion of the lungs, after an illners of 43 hours at bis home Sunday morning last. The entertainment at the rink Monday evening by the band boys was well attended, aud gave very gen eral satisfaction to the good-sized au dience present. The boys were ably assisted by the young ladies, and all performed their parts admirably for the little preparation had. Before our paper again comet out the Government at Washington will have passed into the hands of the Republicans, and General Harrison will be the President of the United States. He is now in Washington, aod his inauguration, which takes place next Monday, will be perhaps the most largely attended of any President the country t has ever had. Hurrah for Harrison ! The Republican acknowledges pleasant visits from a large number of its good friends this week, and returns many thanks. Mr. H. C. Whittekin is this week attending the meeting of the State Grand Lodge, A. O. U. W., at Pitts burgh as tho Representative of Forest Lodge, of this place. "Who did you say is to be the neit President?" "Oh ! I don't know and dou't care. I'm not looking for Presidents I'm hunting for a pain remedy." "Ah, you've only to ask at the next corner for Salvation Oil, it kills pain every time." Mr. Chas. M. Cott of Meadville, paid a flying visit to town last week. Mr. C. has invented a new system of indtxiog for county records, which for completeness seems to cover every point in the minutest particular, and is destined to meet with an extensive sale throughout this and other states. Shugart Watson, who is hauling from Zeigler's mill, on Tubbs Run, saw a large wildcat while driving down the run a few days ago. He put his faithful old dog on the treck, but one whiff of the "varmint," was enough for the cautious canine, and he gently folded his tail hack between his legs and took a position behind the sleigh. Rev. Hickling, who conducted communion services in the Presbyte rian Church last Sabbath was greeted by good congregations at each service, and his former parishioners were greatly pleased and refreshed by his able discourses. Mr. Hickling will always find a warm welcome awaiting him here whenever he can find it convenient to be with his old friends. All who wish to attend the ioau guration of President Harrison are hereby informed that tickets will be on sale from Tionesta and Hickory to Washington and return at half rates, which is $12 79, for the balance of this week, that is, Feb. 27, 28, and March 1st and 2d, good to return up to March 8th inclusive. These rates are certainly very liberal, aod will doubt less he taken advantage of by quite a number. The well of Wolcott & Co., on the Wm. Huddlcson farm, Hickory township, is down and dry. Mr. Wolcott informs us that his company is yet undecided as to whether anoth er well will be put down 00 that farm. Wallace & Pearsall commenced spud ding on a venture in the southeastern porlioo of Jeoks township not far from the Elk county line. It is sit uated on tho eastern part of a vacant warrant, commonly knowu as the Strong warrant, and on the banks of Spring creek. Clark & Foster are drilling ou the southwest corner of Warraut 2775, io MilUtone township, Elk county, and nearly due south from the Wallace & Pearsall well. Should these veutures come in good an immense scope of territory will be opened up. Court Minutes. Low-necked dresses are going to be very popular with the lovely young dudines, because if tbey should catch cold wearing them, haven't tbey got Dr. Bull'e Cough Syrup to cure them ? Charged With a Daring Robbery. On Monday of this week Sheriff Sawyer arrested Adnra Ruth at the instance of Detective Hall of Oil City, who had a warrant for him charging him with the brutal asiault and robbery of an old and inoffensive gentleman, living !n the vicinity of Oil City, on Monday of last week. The prisoner was taken in charge and couveyed to that city yesterday. The following from the Derrick of Tuesday of last week gives tho particulars of the robbery of which Ruthr is charged : A well known character, who is fre quently seen on our streets, Jakey Adamn, of Italian nationality, and aged about GO year, who lives alone in a little ranch a short distance up Charley Run, came into town yester day a little after 12 o'clock and re ported that he had been brutally as saulted and robbed by an unknown young man about 21 or 22 years of age. The old man presented a pitiful appearance, indeed. He had received three or four scalp wounds, from which the blood was flowing freely over his clothes and beard. In broken lan guage the following statement was made hy him : "I was in the house at tending to some work, when a young man came in and said that he was a detective, whose business it was to unearth and bring to justice all coun terfeiters io this section of the State, and as I (Adamo) had been under suspicion for some time as being a member of a gang of counterfeiters, he had come to arrest me, to which, of course, I was much surprised, but re plied that I was perfectly willing to accompany the officer to the Mayor's office for a hearing. When 1 sat down on a chair to put on my shoes, the rascal took the most cowardly ad vantage of me by beating me on the head with an ax handle, after which he fastened my bands behind my back with a strap and then robbed me of about $25 in cash." This, in brief, is the old man's statement, and the cir cumstances in reference thoreto are strange as the assault and robbery were made in broad daylight. Sooc after the occurrence, a young man an swering the description given by the old mao, was seen running up the railroad tiack, by several reliable parties. The next seen of him was at Morgan's store where he purchased some cigars, from thence he went up Spring street in the direction of Siverlyville. This morning's Derrick gives the following particulars of the hearing: "At the hearing yesterday afternoon before Esquire Reynolds, the prisoner was identified by Jacob Adamo, Captain Hathaway, Henry Browo and his two sons as being the same person who slept at the home of the latter the night before bis visit to Captain Hath away and his subsequent assault 00 aud robbery of old man Adamo. At the bearing the prisoner pleaded in nocent of the charges preferred against him, and waived a hearing. Later in the day be was taken to the Nursery and lodged in the county jail to await a further triul." Strobleton. Mr. Jacob Wolfe of Newmansville, assisted Wm. Hepler in cutting fire wood one day last week. A series of protracted meetings is being held in the Amity Church, near Newmansville, by Rev. Carl Zius meister of Fryburg. We sincerely hope and trust that a large amount of good may be accomplished ere the meetings come to a close. Mr. McMichael of this proximity is bimly engaged io slashing down his timber, cutting it into logs anl trans porting them to the mill on Hemlock. Some of our citizens were elected to office in Tionesta twp. last week. Among them Geo. Mealy as "Squire ;" Matthew Bortzer, Constable, aod W. II. Wolfe, Tax Collector and Assessor. We trust that all will make worthy officials. Daisie, daughter of Mr. A. Shriver, had the misfortune of getting a rice grain iu her ear one day last week, which was very paioful until removed. Mr. Wm. Lilly aod wife, of Fryburg, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. Slilzinger not loog since. Mr. E. E. Stilzinger of this locality gave Mr. Daniel Fellows a cull one day last week. Feb. 25.
