E. Church, is attending coofrreuce in Greenville, Pa., this week. His many friends here would be elated to bear of bis return to the Tionesta circuit. Republican committeemen should urge the importance of paying taxes upon members of the party in their districts. It is just now the most im portant work they have. October 6th is the last day. Services will be held in the PresJa bvterian Church next Sabbath morn- png and evening, at the usual bours. Rev. John S. Atkinson, candidate for this field, will preach. A general in vitation is extended. Harmony Oil Co., has a rig near ly completed on Jamieson Run, a mile above Tionesta, and about 50 rods from the railroad track. Drilling will commence just as soon as the ma chinery can be got in motion. Congressman Scott, of the Erie Crawford district, finally concluded that this wasn't a good year for break ing into the Republican party, and so refused to run again. Hon. James It Burns was nominated in bis stead. There will be quarterly meeting held over Sabbath, September 23, in the Mount Tabor Evangelical Church, Preaching Saturday evening, Sabbath morning and evening. Rev. J. D. Domer, P. E., will be present and offi ciate. Court is not as largely attended as usual this week, owing to tbe fact that tbe trial list is short, and perhaps but one or two civil suits will be tried, thus dispensing with the customary array of witnesses generally calle hither. Clarion is bound to be an oil town "bejabers or bust." The latest strike occurred near the Normal school grounds yesterday, and is reported as a 1003 barrel gusher. This is the third one of the kind that has been opened op within a few days past, all about the same size, and owned by Cadwallader & Co. Good luck to the sleepy old burg. Mr. W. W. DirnoDd of Powds, Kansas, is among old Forest county friends at present, and indulging in a general handshaking. William is the same gonial follow he always was, and never fails to receive an old fashioned welcome here. Messrs. B. F. Wioaus, Whig Hill ; Cbas. Southwortb, Newtown; C. C. Smith, Brookstoo ; W. II. Stright and Mr. Martin, Hickory, and Constable White of Barnett, were among the pleasant callers at the Republican office this week. Cbas. Russell's barber shop is now io charge of bis brother, Mr. F. Russell, who will conduct it for an in definite period. He is one of the best artists in his line in the State, and challenges competition in hair cutting, shaving, shampooing and dyeing. It One of tho very important mat ters fur Republicans to look after now is the payment of their State or Couoty tax. Don't neglect it or you will lose your vote, and no Republican wants to lose bis vote in this important year. Saturday, Oct. Gth, is the last day, but you should not put it off that loog. Senator J. H. Wilson and Major W. W. Greenland of Clarion, were among Tionesta's guests yesterday. The latter gentleman has some con gressional fences in this neck o' woods that were likely attracting his atten tioo. We understand the Democratic conference fur this district is set for the 21st inst., at DuBois, Clearfield county. Among our marriage notices this week will be found the announcement of the wedding of Miss Ella Cromer, formerly of this county, but now of Washington territory. Mies Cromer left a host of young friends in this section who will wish her many years of joy in her new relation, and con gratulate the gentleman of her choice on his lucky catch. Rev. 8. Sager preached bis fare well sermon in the F. M. Church here last Sabbath evening, and is now at tending conference at Sharpsville, Mercer county. During Mr. Sager's pastorate on this circuit he has made a large circle of friends who will wish him well in any field to which he may be assigned. We will all lose a good citizen when he moves. Mr. J. W. Sires has bis photo graph gallery, opposite the Lawrence House, in sleek runniog order, and is prepared to take all kinds and sizes of photographs, tin-types, &e., and guar antees bis work to give perfect satis faction. Our citizens have long wished fur a first class photo, artist, and now that they have such, we trust they will encourage him to stay by patron izing him. Squire Hoovler of the Township, wishes to warn the boys who are io the habit of following Wm. Cole over to the depot and keeping the citizens of that neighborhood io a turmoil with their noise and commotion, that the practice must cease, else stringent measures will be resorted to to abate ibe nuisance. And it might be well to administer a little of the same sort of medicine in this borough, as the senseless sport is becoming entirely too numerous. A newspaper and a newspaper editor that people don't talk about, and sometimes abuse, are rather poor concerns, says a very sensible exchange. The meu and business that an editor sometimes feels it a duty to defend, at risk of making enemies of another cntas, are often the very nrst to snow theniogratitude. The editor who expects to receive much chanty or gratitude will soon find out his mis take; but be should go on and say and do what he conscientiously thinks right, without regard to frowns and smiles. Peterson's Magazine for October comes along, looking fresh and bright From an artistic point of view, the number is of exceptional merit. The steel-engraving, "A Reverie," is one of the loveliest girl-faces we have seen in a long while. There are fashion plates and descriptions without stint and valuable information on house hold and medical subjects. In short, it is an admirable number of a most excellent magazine, and we advise all our readers who are not subscribers to examitie it. Terms, two dollars. Ad dress, Peterson's Magazine, 306 Chet nut Street, Philadelphia, Pa. The audience which greeted Mr. Wheeler at his concert in the Presby terian Church last evening, while fair sized, was not as large as it should have been, considering the excellence of tbe entertainment, but Mr. W. was certainly convinced of one thing, it was an appreciative one. Mr. Wheeler's voice is not only very musical, but rich and strong, suffi ciently so, iodeod, to fill tbe largest hall in the couatiy, and Lever shows the least sign of weakening. Mrs. Pomeroy'a rehearsals were exceeding ly taking, and in fact the entertain ment throughout was one of the pleas antest our town has yot enjoyed. Last Wednesday Major John Lockhart, the popular executive clerk, was hurt at Tionesta. He accompa nied the party that went with Chair man Cooper to present the banner to the Forest county Republicans. On the day in question he was severely injured by a log rolling on him while be was examining one of the mills in that lumber district HarrUburg Tel egraph. When Maj. Lockhart left Tionesta he was as healthy, smiling and chipper as a young robin, and as he did no "log rolling" while here, his numerous friends are inclined to look upon the Telegraph's item as a jokelet. General Harrison's Letter. General Harrison's letter, formally accepting the Republican nomination for President, was given to the publio ou Wednesday last, right on top of President Cleveland's, as it were. There is no uncertain or quibbling sound in tbe General's letter. It is vigorous, and goes straight to the point on every question of the hour. We had hoped to lay it before our readers this week, but the report of tbe big meeting crowds it out, and we are obliged to let it go over to next week. Court Minutes. Court opened at 2 o'clock p. m., Monday, Honorable Wm. D. Brown, President, and Hon. Lewis Arner, As sociate Judge, on the Bench. The afternoon was taken up " with tbe usual routine business of receiving returns of the various Constables, in structing the Grand Jury, bearing pe titions, motions, reports, &c. On petition, J. W. Black and R. C, Porter were appointed Clerk and As sistant Assessor, respectively, of Howe Township, vice John II. Frost and James Blair resigned. Tbe petition of Cbas. Jacob Ferret, a native of the Fatherland, asking to be made one of Uncle bam e citizens, was approved by tbe Court and a cer tificate awarded. A recess from 3:30 until 4:00 o'clock was taken, to await the coming of the attorneys for the plaintiffs in the case Fox et al vs. Lacy et al, who arrived on the up river train, but not being familiar with the jury drawn, Judge Corbett, the "war burse" of the party asked to bave tbe case continued until Tuesday morning lo examine the list, upon which tbe court adjourned to 9:00 o'clock a. to., next day. Tuesday morning the work of empanelling a jury in tbe case was taken up and gotten through with, without much trouble, and the opeuing addresses made by Judge Corbett for the plain, tiff, and C. Heydrick Esq , for the de fense. Tbe case is now on trial and bids fair to continue the greater part of to-morrow, Thursday. Tbe Grand Jury returned true bills in tbe cases of the Commonwealth vs. Wallace Thomas, larceny, and G. W. Zents, misdemeanor, and tbe usual im provenients, alterations and repairs were recommended to be made upon the county buildings, bridges, roads and grounds. James Spiers, a Scot by birth, was naturalized Tuesday afternoon. Uncle John Thomson of Stewarts Run, en gineered hlai through. Tally Harri son, Morton and Protection one. The case of Chadman vs. Kepler was continued by consent until next term. The foreign attorneys in attendance are, Judge Corbett, and W. II. Ross Clarion ; Frank Guthrie, Titusville Hon. J. II. Osmer and C. Heydrick Franklin ; W. M. Lindsey, Warren Starr. The question now is, have you got your buckwheat cut, and we suppose the next thing will be flapjacks. No preaching here last Sunday on account of wet weather. Mr. Briggs of Porkey, was here last week on business. Mr. S. Burhen, who bas been on the sick list for some time, is no better a this writing. We think "Wandering Jew" of the Vindicator, must see things in A differ' eut light from other folks, as there never was a communication from here signed J. P. Morton. And again we know of five Republicans to one Dem ocrat, and still he will talk Cleveland We beard a G. A. R. man say tbe other day that he had been a Demo r.rat, but when he thought of Grover it made bim sick ; so count one vote more for Harrisou. Quite a number went from here to Tionesta on the 12tb, and all say it was a grand day. Sept. 17. Bkoom Handle. For Sale or Rent. The very handsome and desirable property of Rev. Warren, Pa., Aug. 31, 1888. Notice. To whom it may concern : My son, George, has led his home without just cause or provocation, and is wanderiDg aimlessly about the country, and I hereby warn all persons not to harbor him, for I will not be responsible for his keeping or any contracts ne should make, and asK as a favor that all whom he visits in bis wanderings would persuade him to re- turn to his home, where he will be welcome and well taken care of. E. W. Smith. Whig Hill, Pa., Sept. 14, 1888. HERE AND THERE. An exchange tells of a school-ma'am who has Introduced a novel system of spelling in ber school. When one of the girls misses a word the boy who spells It correctly Is permitted to kiss the girl. The boys are improving rapidly, but it is fear. ed that the girls will soon forget how to spell their own names. The boiler of the threshing machine seems to be taking the place of the kero sene lamp in the destructive economy of the great western farmers since they be. came able to reap their fields by electric light, drive their steam ploughs and burn natural gas. The kerosene lamp was quite as deadly as the boilor of the steam thresh er, but it didn't kill quito as many people at a time, and the celestial census must now show a preponderance of atnle angols. Blizzard. How Weak Sight is Caused. The dull bleary sight, improving as yon continue to read, and suddonly bleared again when looking at a different distance, again Improving as you continue to gaze, is muscular asthenopia, and is caused by debility of the nervous system that por tion that gives tone and action to the mus cles that adjust the focus of the eye. De bility brought about by any cause will bring this effect, but the most common are from digestive dorangeinents, and the daily excesses in many ways of some. If there is far-sightedness or mixed sight in addition to the other conditions, perfect sight for close objects is hardly possible at any time without glasses. A littlo rest and attention to the diot makes all right again In the majority of cases, while the chronic dyspeptic and those suffering from general debility suf fer from pain in the eyes and forehead and can only recover under the most skillful management. Mrs. W. R. Dopp, formerly of Foxburg, now Punxsutawney, Pa., suffered in this way for five years, and was unable to use her eyes at all until restored by a course of treatment through Dr. Sadler, tbe ocu list, 804 Penn avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa., seven years ago.
