A correspondent of the St. George, . Va., Democrat has this personal mention: "We examined toe Iluling Cu's. works today aud we came to the conclusion that that old wheel horse, J. D. Hulings', head is level and ought to be rewarded for the construction of those mighty butt works which he has built." A law and order society has re cently been organized in this place, which has for its aim the suppression of all forms of vice and immorality, with special reference, as we learn, to the whiskey business and gambling. Fai of Balltown, Howe twp , for a hotel licenee was refused. Judge Brown his opinion states that in as much as Forest county had been without license for three years without apparent loss, it remained for the applicant to rou clusively show that the license asked for was necessary fur the accomraoda tion of the traveling publio and etran gsrs, which was not done to the satis faction of the-court, though the addi tional petition contained a greater number of names than the reruoo strance. Ia addition, the petition did not contain the names of the bonds men, as required by the act of 1887, which io itself was held to be fatal to the application. The application of O. C. Browne!) Tionesta Borough, was withdrawn. Don't Go West. The following extiact from a letter from our old friend Root, we lay be fore our readers at his request aud to their benefit. It explains itself fully and those who read it will readily ap preciate aod endorse Mr. Root's mo live in thus giving them a timely warning : 1 would advise all those expecting work to remain where they are. When we came out here last summer there were not men enough to do the work and wages were high. The word went out all over the country, and now they are coming by the hundreds. I wa up to Tacoma yesterday and the city was full of men hunting work. They come by boatloads from Los Angeles Sau Diego and San Francisco; aod by the carloads from Massachusetts, Peon sylvania, Tennessee, and in fact from all parts of the United Slates. Ou 1110 rauroau near my house men are traveling every hour up and down bUDtiog work. But if a man wants 3 take up land and settle, this is 8 good place. There is money in taking ml holding this timber land. The mill owners must get their stock from ie settlers. They cannot get timber any other way. A man can come out ere this summci, take a homestead laim, and his family can stay east ntil next spring or summer. There are plenty of claims yet untaken, but men are here every few days inquiring for Government land. Those who in tend corning here to locate, ought to come soon. A. B. Rout. The Democracy Meets. A Harrieburg dispatch under dale f 221 savs: The Democratic Slate Convention will meet here to-morrow. Congress man Scott appears to have a decided majority with him, aud the friends of President Cleveland will have do dif ficulty io directing the proceedings of the body and naming all of the dele gates at large. The only opposition to the program as arranged by Mr. Scotl aod his friends to-day, comes from the friends of ex-Congressman Speer, of Huntingdon county, who with the bl owers of Mr. IUndall, have beeo making an effort to break the slate and delegate ex Congressman Charles E. Boyle, of Fayette, but this movement has proved a failure, and the four del egates at large will be Congressman Scott, of Erie; Hon. Lewis Cassidy, of Philadelphia ; Congressman Mutch er, and Mr. Boyle. Ex Chaitman of the State Committee Wm. U. Hensel, of Lancaster, will be the temporary chairman, and ex-Senator Wm. A Wallace, the permanent chairman. So sure are the friends of the administra tion of being aide to control the con ventinn that they bave prepared 1 platform in full, which it is expected will be adopted without any difficulty. It endorses the President and the Mills tariff bill and is otherwiae just what Congressman Scott and his friends desire. No attention is being paid to the judicial nomination, and it will go haphazard to any one of half dozen candidates. HERE AND THERE. Throe or four bnrrols of oil rolloJ from a wagon opposite the Oil Exchaugo this week, and created the greatest consterua tion. Such a thing as a barrel of actual oil near the exchange had not been known in years. A mooting of brokers vas at once called, and resolutions passed do nouncing the accident as an outrage, con trary to the rules of the exchange and in jurioustothe "business interests" there carried on. Titusvlllo Citizen, Au exchange says: Duke Center, in the upper oil regions, is going the way of Pit- hole, Petroleum Center and other whilom oil towns. The citizens of Duke Center have petitioned court to revoke the bor ongh charter, alleging that so many peo pie aro moving away that tho expenses of a borough cannot be paid by those who remain. Thus one after another of the towns in the once famous Bradford oil region aro bolng blotted from the map, "pulled up and hauled away." A Foo Cboo delegate to the Methodist Conference asked that body on Thursday if a convert from heathenism having more than one wife could retain more than oue wife and at the same time be t good Moth odist. He is the oldost law yer in active practice iu this section of tho State, if not in the country. It is nearly if not quite fifty years since he commenced practicing in the courts f McKean and Potter counties. From the organization of Elk county in 1813 and Forest iu 181H, he hits been in almost continuous practii in tho courts of the rive counties, includ ing Warren, excepting ten years that he served as judge of the Erie and Warrc judicial district. It is interesting to hear him relate tho story of his travels through the wilderness iu the early days of his professional career, and ho must hav been possessed of an iron constitution to have withstood the hardships and priva tions of those days and yet be as vignrou at 80 as most men are at 00 years ot age, His many friends In McKean county hope that he may retain the full vigor of I mental faculties aud the perfect heal I with which he has boeu blessed through life, for many years to come.
