The "wets" are evidently pre par ing tor a dry spoil up at Erie. We observe that one nf her citizens has iu vented a "cork extractor.". The harbingers of spring have arrived last summer's garden seed boxes, and the small boy with his pocket full of marbles. Mr. J. D. Logo a I'd of Waukegsn, 111., accompanied by bis daughter, Mrs. EJ. Ballou's Magazine for March is at hand with large fund of pleasant and useful reading matter, as usual. Subscribe now. Only $1 50 per year. Address, 23 Itawley St., Boston, Mim. Mr. Iugby of Pleaeantville, Pa., it here arranging for the purchase of Mr. Herman's interest in the drug and grocery store of Herman & Sig gins. Mr, B. comes well recommend ed us a first class citizen. The Wolcott well was shot with a hundred quart torpedo on Monday afternoon, but what the response was we have not beeu able to learn. Tbe well commenced filling up with oil as toon as it bad cleaued itself. Io reporting the names of those who took part io tbe entertainment of the German Hill school last week we unintentionally omitted the following: Dora and Zona Lohmeyer, Clara and Amanda Ledebur, and Flora and Harry Ikenberg. The Frabklin Kent was ten yeart old last Fiiday, and a mighty healthy ten-year old it is too. We understand Mr. Irwiu bat told his interest iu the paper to hit partner, Mr. J. B. Bor land, but will continue on tbe editorial staff, to that the readert will not mist bia pleasing effusions. Hon. J. B. Agnew, Tionesta, Pa., who is frequently mentioned at the Republican nominee from the twenty fifth congressional district of that tlate, is io the city, and it stopping at the St. James Hotel. National Hepub lican, Washington, I. C. Mr. Agoew arrived at home last evening. Messrs. Tbos. Brace & Co. have the wire stretched across the river op posite their mills at the moutb of Lit tle Tionesta, and will run a firry for the purpose of transporting their lum ber, staves, S c., to the railroad. This it ao improvement that will prove of value io the handling of their waret. Although the mouth of February is the shortest in tbe year tbe Uekb i.ic'an will be Usued five timet duriog the month. This is the first time such a remarkable occurrence bat ever taken place ao far at we know, and, although we have not figured it up, it mill not likely occur again in 200 or 300 years; however, we will call attention to tbe fact wbeu it does. --"Yeart have not teen and time shall not tee," the people tit down quietly to suffer pain, when enterprise can afford tucb a panacea at Salvation Oil. We are in receipt of the admira ble address of Governor Beaver at tbe banquet of tbe Ohio Republican League, Columbus, O., on tbe 13ib inst., in commemoration of the birth day of Abraham Lincoln. Tbe Gov ernor's wat the set speech of the oc casion, and it a beautiful and loyal tribute to tbe great Lincoln. Bro. Wenk, of Tionesta, had pre sented to bit hungry family a "nice mess of fish of the tmelt variety." Up here we don't call 'em nice when they are "smelt." Warren Mail. It occurs to us, from the fust tome of our impecunious brothers are making about it tbat they haven't "smell" a fish, or anything else good to eat, for a coon't ago. Flags fur signalizing the weather for thit place have arrived and been doing duty tince. J. II. Fonee has volunteered to act in the capacity of chief signal officer, and performs his duty promptly and with "signal" abil ity. The flags, which some mistook for a "washing" at first, are suspended over tbe street from a wire connected to Bovard't and Smearbaugh & Co.'e stores. Tbe Drillers aud Tuoldressers Union of Grand Valley has several members iu this place and vicinity. Last Friday they received their monthly checks from the Union, amounting to $1.00 per day for the time tbey have belonged. Each mem ber gets a dollar a duy until the shut down embargo is raided, and they are privileged, iu the meantime, to follow any other avocation they chooee. Atteution it directed to the ad. of tbe Northwestern Lumberman, in this issue. No recommendation of this great journal is necessary to those who have ever teen or read it. It it the recognized lumberman'! journal of the Uoited Slates aud one number con tains more reliable information to the trade than all others of its cIobb com biued. Every lumberman should read it. Two young men of Tionesta skat ed from that place to Oil City yester day in a little over three hours. Franklin Newt, of last Saturday. Tbey consumed most of this time going from here to President, where they took dinner, if reports are correct. After gelling a good square meal at that place, t he y made tbe balauce of the distance in less than 40 minutes on "Pap" Richards' express train. A'ftarful cyclone visited the city of Mt. Vernon, III., on Sunday after noon last at five o'clock, which de stioyed nearly three hundred resi dences and places of business and un housed from twelve to 6fleen hundred people. In the fall of the walls many persons were buried under the debris and thirty-five were killed, while twice as many more were injured, eight or ten so seriously that their recovery is despaired of. O. P. Morrow, of Rockland, spent Thursday tiiht io Emlenton, and called at this office. Mr. Morrow was a member of the last Assembly aud propose to make ao effort for re-election to the next. Emlenton Neiva. Mr. Morrow was one of the most level headed members of the last House, bis tervicet being very creditable alike to himself aud his constituents. Should the people of Venango county return him next fall they may rest assured tbat they bave a member who has both tbe ability to discover a bad pioce of legislation when he tees it, and the backbone to tit down upon it after the disoovery. Two indispensa ble requisites in a good legislator. A young man bat been passing counterfeit money in Butler and Ve nango counties, and tbe clever way iu which he does it is liable to render aoy one an easy victim. He is small of ttature aud plainly dressed, aud goes from one farm bouse to another in prosecuting his nefarious business. He does not exactly take tbe role of a tramp, but at every bouse says that he is suffering from hunger and asks for a loaf of bread, and offers a silver dollar in payment for tbe same. If the householder cannot furnish him bread be invariably asks him to give small change for the dollar. In every iuetance the money be leaver is spu rious, but is such a clever representa tion of the geouioe that no one but an expert could detect the difference. We might bave known when we published that item last week thank ing Sheriff Sawyer for that donation of smelt, that some envious brother of the craft would misconstrue it and bave us down as one of tbe Sheriff's regular "star" boarders, but we scarce ly looked fur it to came from tbe Oil City Blizzard, to whom we have ever been particularly kiud and indulgent; but it couldn't resist the temptation and this ia the way we are treated : " 'All things are possible to him tbat waits.' Though the path of the editor may at timet appear unduly dark and uottrewn with luscious and tempting laodwichea, the time will come, tooner or later, if be toils on manfully, when he will obtain a aquare meal. Sheriffs arc not to rare in thit country that ao editor who conducts bit paper io bis own wty will not cotno in contact with them occasionally and enjoy their generous ho'pitaltiy, sometimes for a tingle meal and at other times for thirty days. Let ut be up and doing, brothers, and cultivate our bump of hope until we can hang our hat on it. Continuing tbe report of the banquet above mentioned Bro. Wenk says that fish of tbe smelt variety are a rarity in that section. To a certain extent tbe same is true of this vicinity. Still, we have "smelt" fish right here in Oil City which we would not bave eaten with the sheriff or anybody else." Mr. S. N. Flowers has the exclu tive agency of Forest county for a book of rare excellence. It is enti tled, "Marvelous Wonders of the Whole World," and gives ao accoont of thrilling adventorts, famous sights, celebrated voyages and renowned ex plorations and discoveries in all parts of the globe; containing wonders of the Dark Continent, the land of the pyramids, the flowery kingdom of the celestials, tbe ancient empire of the Mikado, tbe sea-girt isles of tbe Pa cific, etc., etc., and including the dis coveries of Livingstone, Stanley, Ba ker, Speke, Du Chaillu and other cel ebrated explorers in the tropict; the voyages of Franklin, Kane, Greely and other famous navigatort in tbe Polar Regions, with world-renowned scenes, and objects of ioterest in all lauds. Tbe whole comprising a vast museum of all that is marvelous and wonderful io the earth, sea air and skies. Mr. Flowers will call on the citizens and solicit tbeir orders, and those wanting a nice work should tub scribe. Peterson'e Magazine for March, opens with one of the finest steel eu graviogg it has given iu a long time, noted as it is for its excellence in that particular. The full-page wood cut, "Across My Path," is also an excelleut picture, illustrating a very dramatic story. The iuitial article is an illus trated sketch of Haddon Hill, one of the most picturesque and famous old manor-houses in England. The fashion-plates and illustrations are as co pious as ever, and contain tbe newest design for Bpring toilettes. In every way, the number is a complete success. Terms, two dollars a year. Address Peterson's Magaziue, 306 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, Pa. This is to express my sincere thanks for the benefit I have exper ienced from the use of Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup.
