Out door life agrees with him, and the people will bear that in mind in November, TiiF.URnro lots of Democratic And Mugwump organs in this country that would willingly pay big money fur a strictly li rst i'lasf, plausible nnd well supported lie about James O. "Thk generosily of his fellow citi zens should alone decree how far good intentions should excuso his (the Trns ident's) shortcomings," gays Mr. Cleve land in his speech at Clintoo. ' It is now considered certain that Secretary Latunr, Confederate Demo crat of Mississippi, will be appointed a Judge of the Supremo Court of tbe United States, in place of Justice Woods, deceased. The objective point of the Confederate party is to secure control of the Supreme Court as soon as possible. II, I t. A Presidential Canvass. f The Presidential canvaBS made by khe Toledo JJlade uni published in The Press of yesterday doubtless fair ly reflects the general Republican sen timent. The paper has no strong per sonal bias which would influence its readers. Tho responses came from all .sections and all States. Under such -circumstances the expression of the twenty-one thousand Republicans who answered the call for their preference corresponds substantially with the ,, choice of any other similar number swho might have the opportunity of speaking. This canvass emphasizes, what was already well understood, that Mr. .Blaine is the favorite of the great mass of Republicans and that Senator seitnu . ..is is divided between these two eminent leaders in the pro portion of two to one. Other conspic ,-uous men like Lincoln, Allison, liar Tison and llawley some of whom '-would make eligible candidates, re -ceive a few scattering votes, but the thought of Republicans centres chief ly in the two able statesmen who con- fsdlviojX-ivboyeall others. The .ote shows that Mr. Blaiue maintains '.his undiminished hold upon the con , fidence and regard of his party, and the very decided lead of, Mr. Sherman . for second choice is proof that, if he : -does not attach to himself a strong and ardent personal following like Mr. Blaine, he still commands the sin . ere respect and admiration of Repub cans for his great ability and high k- 1 hlin nurnnse. , i - i 0e-of the mo6t interesting features of the canvas) is the fact that even in ; Ohio Mr. Blaine slightly leads Mr. Sherman. The attempt has been made ! in some quarters to embroil the friends I of Mr. Blaine and those of Mr. Slier jua4n Ohio in an unseemly and un fjrtunatb conflict. This effort finds no prompting or sanction outside of the titate. No friend of Mr. Blaine bo Dnd tbe borders of Ohio would as . ume to meddle with its internal poli tics, and least of all would seek to ex ;te any opposition to Mr. Sherman iu own state. The true policy and rBi.u sincere feeling of Republicans who ; have the best interests of the psrty at i heart is to promote mutual consider I ation and deference. Mr. Bluiuo aud Mr. feherman are themselves the best of friends, and their cordial regard ' and considerate bearing toward each other constitute a worthy example for all others. ! But this cauvass discloses that the Republicans of Ohio are themselves about evenly dividud iu their prefer ences. It is not an expression of the j politician. but of the people, and it ; explains whatever of rivalry has ap- !peared in the preliminary meetings aud the county conventions. If the preference of the Republicans is strong enough to impel them to this expres .. jioo, it is strong enough to guide them iu the Ktrms of political action. The Republicans of Ohio tuusi answer for , lJ:euj:lv. I'hiU. J'nsi. The Henry George party in New York is threatened with a new danger. The Socialists are making every effort to gain control. They are electing delegates to the convention to meet in Syracuse in August, with every pros pect of having a large following. It is altogether probable that the party has seen its best days in any event, but if the Socialists get control they will hang it iu short order. J'hila. Times. The charge preferred by tho Salt Lake Tribune against General Mc demand, one of the Utah Commis sioners, that in voting for Judges of Elections ho proposed to give tho Mormons control of one half the polls, is too serious to be passed by without an investigation. The law under which the elections were held was en acted for the specific purpose of keep ing tbe Mormons from obtaining con trol, aud if Commissioner MClerlaud has been gulity of such a flagrant at tempt to nullify it he can not be oust ed from office too soon for the good of himself and those who placed him thcie. Hall for some relia ble ' Cure for Snake-Bites," other than the one in common use. I am glad lo be able to name at least three or four, either of which I should soouer risk than the one in question ; and most of which are within all our homes, or in tho poultry yard. First, common turpentine. Applied hs quickly as possible after the acci dent. Mode of Application : Where you have a lurgc necked bottle, put in as much as it will hold, and place the uncorked mouth immediately over the wound, and hold the bottle on so close ly (hat but little if any of the liquid can escape. In a very few seconds the conteuts of the bottle will be colored with tho virus drawn from the wound. After a few minutes empty the bottle, and after refilling, apply again. When bottle cannot be had, let the wound be, kept well soakel with turpentine, by using a largo pieco of cotton cloth well saturated, aud changing the cloth every two or three miuutes. Second, a very strong solution of soda, applied iu the same way as the turpeutine, when turpentine is not on hand. Also lot the patient have strong soda water to drink freely. Third, (aud I am not sure but first in efficiency,) I call attention to tbe chicken or fowl remedy. Let any fowl (a dog, cat or pig would no doubt answer as well) be killed, and cut in pieces instantly, and a large piece of the bird or animal, be applied to and bound upon the wound while the flesh is still warm. In two or three minutes let this be removed, as it becomes col ored with the extracted virus, and an other piece be substituted in its place. Fourth, ammonia, or "spirits of hartshorn," applied in the same way as the turpentiue or solution of soda. As well read a physician, I thiuk, as any 1 know, assured me, a few years ago, that while whisky is not, in reali ty, an antidote to snake bite p .ison, that ammonia is. Tho fact, he said, that the former sometimes figures, iu the cure of a poisonous bite, was not owing to its being an antidote per se. for such it is not. But the only bene fit that came from its use was a sort of arrest of the further progress of tbe poison through the system, until na ture could throw it off, and thus some times (but not always) proves a kelp, until Nature resumes her normal func tions, while iu case of the remedies mentioned in this article, the poison is at once eliminated from the system. Iu case the accident occurs some dis tance from a house, and where neither of these four articles can at ouce be bad, let either or both of the following expedients be temporarily adopted: First, the poison be drawn from the wound with the putieut's own mouth, if be can reach the bitten part, or by another, if he is not alone. Or if mud can be found, or water with which to make some mud, let a good sized mud poultice be applied to and kept firmly ou the bitten place, until one of the remedies above described can be an plied.
