Mr. James Pease came down from Cataraugus county, N. Y., last Wednesday evening to see his mother, who is still critically ill. James was looking well aud found time to shake bands with a good many of his old friends here. Memorial Day will bo observed one week from next Saturday, and the indications are that in this place there will be a general turnout. Stow Post will have charge of tho arrange ments and have perfected a good pro gram for the day. One of Michael Mongs boys, a lad of about 14 years, living iu the Red Brush settlement, Tionesta twp., accidentally shot himself in the left leg below the knee a short tiiuo ago. Having bad do regular medical at tendance at the time, the ball was not taken out, and is now giving some trouble. The "olJst inhabitant" furnishes the Meadville Herald the following concerning the early spring: "The spring is the earliest we have had since 1834. On that year vegetation was advanced about the same as now, but in tba middle of May there came a heavy snow storm which lasted for several days, and there was at the time good sleighing." Louis Moon, a 14 year-old lad of Mr. Cephas Moon of German Hill, ac cidentally shot himself in the left hand with a 22 calibre revolver last Saturday. The ball entered the hand about the centre and ascended up ward toward the arm. The hand was so much swollen that the doctor's probe could not be inserted iu the wound and the exact location of the ball is not yet fcnown. Judge Paxson, of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, handed down an opinion, Monday, decidiug that the Revenue law of June 30, 1885, is constitutional. This law provides that mortgages and other mooted securities in the hands of corporation! are taxa ble, lie further rules that ihe pro vision of the Act exempting from taxation "notes or bids for work or labor done" is unconstitutional, but that this does not invalidate the eu tiro Act. Assessors are directed to teport the same for taxation. The opinion concludes by stating that the entire revenue system of Pennsylva nia needs to be remodeled iu accord ance with the new'coustitution. Peterson's Magazine for June is issued and fully sustains its world wide reputation for superiority over all other ladies' books. A system which prevents disputes and litigation so effectualy, should be adopted by all interested in the busi ness. The Derrick this morning has the following oil news from tho Balltown region, this couuty: The Anchor oil company finished its first well on the tag end of the Balltown field. It started off at better than 100 barrels, but on the second or third day cfter completion it was deemed expedient to explode it. The well is now doing about eighty barrels a day. The An chor company is drilling another well on the same land and have a rig in re serve for a third. Maj. Reed, the well known hotel man, gets a rake off from this well. J. C. Welch drilled two wells on 5214. May, Kelly fe Grau din are drilling three wells in the same quarter, and between these three enterprising firms tbey manage to keep up au appearauco of activity. Tho way the new wells decline indicates edge. N. F. Clark finished a well on the Stone lands this month and is now drilling another one and commencing a rig to day. The finished well start ed off at 50 barrels. John Cucherane bought from the McCaliuont oil com pany the Howe farm the Sheffield dis trict, together with 25 wells and C2 barrels production. Court bas been very busy since Monday. The grand jury returned a true bill for murder against Edward S. Walton. Also a true bill against J. M. Kepler for libel. Commonwealth vs. J. M. Kepler, assault and battery, truo bill. R. R. Andrews prosecutor. The Court refused all licenses on Tuesday afternoon. The case of Mary E. Wareham vs. B., N. Y. & P. Ry. was nonsuited. Case of Haslett aud Hulings vs. J. D. Lewis et al, involving the title to an island in Tionesta creek, in the rich Balltown oil field, was tried and verdict rendered for defendants. On Tuesday afternoon the work of empanelingajury in the Walton-Mealy murder trial began. When court ad journed for the day tea jourors were obtained when the panel wasexeusted. The Sheriff was ordered to select tales men and out of a large number gath ered in two were finally selected. Osroer of Franklin, and E. L. Davis of Tionesta. Maj. Reid was opening the ca3e as we go press and we can therefore give none of the testimony at present. The case draws a good many spectators to the court house, and will bo listened to with a great deal of interest. Kellettville Items. Quite a number of our citizens are attending court. Mrs. Lewis Aruer is absent on a visit to her daughter's at Nebraska, this Co. Mr. Orion Siggins of West Hickory, and Mr. Warner, Supt. of the tannery at that place, were here Sunday. Mr. Warner informs us that the tannery and other buildings needed for the manufacture ol fine or upper leather will be very solid stiuctarcs; also that another tannery is talked of. As to the tannery here it is getting along nicely. The grading is about done and several masons are at work building the stone work. James Bab has moved into the bark woods. Peirson & Bab have given out their bark job iu small lots; we failed to learn names of all the parties who took jobs. Free Methodist Sabbath School each Sunday at 11 a. in. Those of our people who attended the Quarterly meeting at Whig Hill were amply repaid. The communion sermon Sabbath evening by Presiding Elder Bray was an earnest appeal to the laity and a very able discourse. It. Terrible Tornado in Ohio. The most furious tornado ever known in that section swept over the counties of Seneca, Hardin, Wyan otte and Mercer, in Ohio, on Friday night of last week, leaving death and desolation in its track. It is estimat ed that fifty persons have been killed and over five hundred more or less in jured. Millions of property was de stroyed. It is impossible to give any accur ate figures regarding the loss of prop erty at present. Much of the dam ago consists in the destruction of crops and timber, and the washing away of arable lands, and no one can place the real money valuation on any sort of property. Wires are down in all di rections, and the uews so far comes mainly from the larger towns, aud not until the county districts are heard from will it be known just how disas trous tho storm has been.
