It is a very common occurrence for persons when the oil gets low in the botvl of the lamp and the flame dies down for lack of oil to feed, t shake the lamp to saturate the wick instead of replenishing the oil. It is authoritively stated that a tannery will be built on or near the site of the former Extract Workt, at Kellettvilie, this county. W. W. Kellett Co., of Boston, are the pro jpctor, and we understand work will begin as soon as spring open.) up. The works will be on an extensive scale with a large capacity for turninj out leather. Tha erection of a tannery at Hickory is a settled fact. Up in Jeffirson county, at the last term of court, it was found that there was not a single bill for the grand jiry to act on, and that the jail had not a single occupant. This is soaietning that has never occurred in any county in the State. Verilv Jef ferson is the zoodv. eood couotv. Ex. That's nothicz to crow over. An accident occurred at Russell's Mills, Kingsley township, on Monday afternoon uf this week, by which Ja cob Harking, whose home is in the McCkskey Settlement, Clarion coun ty, was instantly killed. In company with two brothers and some other men, he was cutting logs in the woods. A tree which was being felled, dropped ia the opposite direction from which the men expected it to, striking Har kins oo the head, crushing him to the ground, breaking both legs, one arm and scattering his brains on the snow. When picked up life was ex tinct. He waa taken to the place where the mother of the young meo keeps house for them, and afterward removed to his home for burial. He was a single man, aged about 26 years, ! and bore a good reputation for indus try and honesty. Fire Nipped in Tha Bud. What woald surely have proven a destructive conflagration was nipped in the bud by the prompt action of the fire boys and ibe application of the fire extinguisher. About four o'clock Mmday afternoon the roof of tha old Universalis church caught fire and bad gaiued considerable head way before beiog discovered. The "Champion" wa quickly wheeled into service, however, and in let than one minute after tha stream struck ihe blaze the fire was gone. There was no ladder to be had, and the only way to get on the roof was to climb a tree standing near and jump; this was doae by Rib. Haslet, and the hose pa.?ed to him. Il would have taken at least 15 minutes to have procured a laa ier aod thrown water oa with buckets which would have been too late. The strong wind blowing di rectly south would have carried the dames to tha adjoining building, and then to have saved Wilbur Grove's elegant residence would hava been next to impossible under tha circum stances. As it was a hole about five teet square was burned ia the church roof, from which it can be jadged what a fine start tha fire had. Score another victor v for tha "sod foua-ti3." Death of Robert Hyner, a Former Tionesta Citiien. A Trenton, N. J., dipatcb, under date of Feb. 24, gives the interesting details of the death of Mr. Robert Hyner, over twenty ysars ago a resi dent of this place. The older class of our citizens will remember Mr. IJyner and family well, having occupied a bouce near the east end of the river bridge. At that lime Mr. II. owned a farm on Pitbole which was too poor to a3ord him a comfortable living. When the great Pitbole excitement broke out Mr. Hyner sold his !ann for an immense sura of money and moved to Erie county, where he re mained several years, ard afterwards moved to Vineland, N. J. His sudden rise in wealth did not overcome him, and ho waa shrewd enough to retain the bulk of it after doing well by bis sons. Following is the dispatch, which will recall to the minds of those beet acquainted with him some of bis pe culiarities: An old and substantial resident of Vineland, named Robert Hycer, died recently and it Has supposed be left several thousand d illirs. The reli livea made an examination of his ef fects tor a will, but failed to find such a document. There was no evidence of wealth, and his heirs were greatly perplexed. 1 hey nnaUy requested Judge Doughty to make a thorough starch of his house, on Webt Boule vard, near Walnut street, which he did yesteiday. The result was a great surprise to the rtlatives. In an old valiie in the closet were found cash and securities to tho amount of $31, 500 There wan $11,000 in gold. $13,000 in registered government, $7,550 in coupon bonds. Judge Doughtv at once deposited tha "find" in the Vineland bank. There were also frund deeds fir pr,pprty in Illi nois valued at $'20,000. There are six heiis to the estate, a wii'e and five children. Court Minutes. Salmon Creek Lumber Co. vs. W. A. Dusenbury, verdict for the plaintifi. Peter Berry et al vt. L. F. Kep Isr a very fine point was sprung to se cure the quashing of the indictment. The law requires the jury wheel to be filled by the Jury Commissioners, aod Jurors to be drawn hfore each term by the Sheriff' and Jury Commwwners, also that the jury whetl remain in cus tody of the Jury Commissioners, and the key with the Sheriff. The fact that the Sheriff aasisu in drawing a jury aod does not assist in filling the wheel is a very close distinction. The Jury Commissioners having no office, the wheel has always remained ia the Sheriff' office. Because tha Sheriff assisted to fill the wheel in January and it was left in his office, the indict ment against Kepler was quashed. The other reasons set out ia bis affida vit having no weight in it. The fact that the jury wheel was so filled and left in the Sheriff ' office was no bar to any case being tried where parties were williog to go to trial, and the civil cases were tried where the par ties were ready for trial. Tha Sheriff has assisted ia filling the jury wheel, and it has remained iu the Sheriff's office ever since the Court House was built, and it is not strange that, following in the fiotiteps of their predecessors, the error was made. Kepler was bound over for hi ap pearance at May term. Argument term fixed for March 18, at 2 o'clock p. a. wanted-stave bolts. March 2, 1836. Oil Notes. In its oil report fur the month of February (he Blizzard has tha follow ing relative to the operations ia the Cooper and Balltowa districts, this county : Operations are very quiet in the Cooper district. The attempt to con vert the old Adams & Storey duster in the southwestero part of let 338. into a producing well was a fiat fail ure. The well bad been filling up with oil for months and made an occa sional light flow. The effect of a heavy shot was to dicsipate all tha oil that the well contained, and with it vanish all the hopes of the resurrec tionists. Magee & King drilled a duster on lot 358 north of the old Barnes gasser. The Anchor Oil Co. started up their well on lot 401 which waa drilled 1200 feet and found dry in the second sand and it ia now pro nounced no good. Fertig & McKin ney got another small well ia the sec ond sand near Koxburg, and Emery & Schuyler have abandoned a Ust well oa the eastern side of lot 438 after sinking it over 2,500 feet. 3Iil ler 4 Co. are drilling oo lot 756, west of the Herrick lands ia aa attempt to widen out the second sand territory of the Cooper tract. At Balltown May, Kelly AGrandin hava completed a couple of twenty Sve barrel producers oa lot 5215, which look as if the limits of the belt were very close at hand ia this direc tion. On the northeast Clark is cred ited with two more good wells, while the Baiituwn and Dutch oil compa nies complete! two of smaller pro ductive calibre. James Welsh is at work again on 5214, making a fourth attempt to discover the prolongation of the Balltown field. Forest County's hsane. Warrex. Pa., Feb. 23, 1886.
