'.A J. E. WESK, - - EDITOR. WEDKSMl MOUSING, FEB. 17, ISM, DEATH OF GENERAL HANCOCK. General Wiofield Scott Hancock died suddenly at bis headquarters on Governor! Island, N. Y., on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1880, at 3 o'clock p. m. It was not generally known until bis death was announced that he was ill, but be has been struggling for gonio time past against a complication of physical disorders and tbe appearance of a carbuncle about a week ago was tbe last straw. General Hancock was bom iu Montgomery couDty, Vx, February 14, 1824. He graduated from tbe West Point academy in 1844, and in 1846 received his commission as lieutenant of regular infantry. He served during tbo Mexican war, and at itu close was made quartermaster of bis regiment. In 1855 be wa appoint ed captaio ia the quartermaster's de pertinent, and took part in tbe Flori da campaign against tbe Seminole In dians. In 1661 he was appointed a brigadier general of volunteers, and served in the array of tbe Potomac. He accompanied General McClellan'a army to the peninsula in 1862, and distinguished himself at tbe battle of Williamsburg. ' At the battle of Fredericksburg, in December, 1862, he commanded a di vision, which suffered severely, and for his meritorious conduct on this occa sion received a commission as major general of voluntoers. In the battle of Gettysburg, July, 1863, Hancock's division bore the prominent part, although he himself was severely wounded in tbe action, lie recovered sufficiently to return to duty December 27, 1863, but, was uu- able to coramaud a body of troops till April, 1864, when he was promoted to the command of tbe Second army corps, and was engaged in all the bat tles of tbe Wilderness campaign, from May 5 to June 19j 1864, wbeu thu breaking out of tbe old wound re ceived at Gettysburg compelled him to leave for a time. lie returned to his command in July, and remained with it till November 26, 1864, being subsequently engaged in lighter duties till tbe close of the war. Ha was promoted to be brigadier goneral of the regular array in Au gust, 1864, brevet major general March 13, 1865, and major general United States army July 26, 1866. After the war General Hancock was euccessivoly commander of the middle department (1865 66), of the depart ment of the Missouri (1866 67,) of the department of Louisiana and Texas (1867-69), and of the department of Dakota (1869-72). Upon the death of Geueral Meade. November. 1872. the president, in acknowledgement of his great military services, appointed General Hancock to the command of the department of the east, with his headquarters at Governor's Island, New York, a position which he held until1 the time of his death. In 1868 General Hancock was a prominent candidate for the democrat ic nomination to the presidency, which, however, was given to ex Governor Seymour, of New York. Securing the nomination in 1880, he was de feated in the election by Mr. Garfield. who received a popular majority of ,uio aria an electoral majority of 49 over General Hancock. General Hancock was buried in his native city, Norristown, Fa., on Sat urday last. Horatio Seymour Dead. Ex-governor Seymour, tbe venera ble democratic leader, died at exactly 10 o'clock Friday night, 12th inst., at the residence of his sister, Mrs. Roscce Conkling, $u Utica, N. Y. He began to fail perceptibly at 4 o'clock. Short ly afterwards, owing to stimulants be iog administered him, be rallied a lit tie, but soon relapsed into total un consciousness. During his illness be expeiibnced little if any physical suf fcriug. Ho was past 75 years pf age Hi terved his first terra as Governor of New York 1853 5, aud was again elected in 1862 as a war Democrat. In 1868 Ganeral Grant defeated him for President, since which he has beeu very little in politics. He has always enjoyed a high reputation for scholar. ship aud moral rectitude. Postmaster, General Vilas has taken upon himself to decide that let ter carriers da hot come under the provisions of the eight hour law. If we had a few more such men as Mr. Vilas there would be nothing for the higher courts to do in the line of in terpreting tbe laws. Cut perhaps the ielter caririers will insist upon having tho matter passed upon by tbe Su preme Court. The President will stick to tbe tele phone jobbers. , Not even the laments of the sorrowing mugwumps tan weau him from the defiling pitch. The technical defense of Attorney goscral Garland's telephone transac tion by George Ticknor Curtis can hardly do tbe defendant any good. Mr. Curtis is a specialist a corpora tion lawyer whose appearance in a case generally indicates that the pa tient is in a pretty critical condition. The Democratic papers Bre all of the opinion that Roger, who gave the Pan-Electric stock to Mr. Garland, is a crank. Nevertheless, we do not see that any such plea exonerates the man who took tbe stock. Perhaps these able orgnus will show later on that tbo Attorney General was suffering from emotional insanitv. The investigation of the charges against the honesty of tbe election of Senator Payne of Ohio, id being con ducted in secret, but enough has leak ed out to show that money was offered in largo sums and illegal ways in Payne's interest. Whether he was cognizant of tbe uieaus his henchmen used to procure his election is not yet apparent, and its bearing upon the point in issue is of secondary import ance. If his election was bought even without his knowledge his title is in valid and his presence in tbe Senate is a scandal. Phila. Press. Congressman White on Ireland. The Irish World, of New York, pub lishes a long list of letters from ' mem bers of Congress on the Irish question, among which we find the following fiom Hon. Alexander C. White of this district : "Ireland a nation!" Happy thought, cheering motto, and universal watch word of tho people of the land of my forefathers land of tbe noblest, brav est, best of men. My feelings are intense when I recall the wrongs, indignities, injuries, and injustice heaped upon the Irish people by cold, cruel, hartless, wicked England. I rejoice in tho achievements of Par- ncll aud his followers. Tbe heroic aud manly attitude of Ireland to-day in tbe presence of her eternal foe has no par allel in the annals of history and calls forth the admiration of the whole world. "Ireland a ration!" God speed the right! and may the lime soon come when that sentiment, with all it im plies, is fully realized. "Irelaud a nation! Her miseries can never be told, her outrages never forgotten or forgiven. Having lived through many trialc, robbed of every right and mu living! and success fully menacing her ancient enemy may she, 0 may she burst tbe bands and break the shackles welded about her fair hands for centuries, and add one more bright star in the constella tion of nations. Tho land of Wash ington, the home of Lincoln, and of Grant, free America, will hail with de light the emerald flash of that star around which so many glonous recol lections cling. All honor to Parnell and his noble followers. May they go on in their victorious career until Ireland shall be a nation, in fact as well as in name, is the heartfelt wish of your humble servant.
