For tha fifth time tb country is called to inouru the death of a Vice Presideut while holding the office. They were George Clio-tun, Elbridge Gerry, William 11. King aud IleDry Wilson. Thomas' A. Hendricks died t his home in Indianapolis, Iudiana, on Wednesday evening, Nov. 25, 1885, at 4:45 o'clock, after an illness of about 24 hours. His physicians pro nounced his disease paralysis of ike brain. Mr. Hendricks was born September 7, 1819, uear Zaneaville, O., and when six months old was taken by his pa rents to Indiana, of which slate he has ever eiuce been a resident until his death at Indianapolis, its capital, last Wednesday. Tb siory of his life naturally divides itself into three parts. The first covers the period of his boyhood, education at Hanover College, study of the law at Cham li era burg, Pa., election to the Legisla ture iu 1848 and to Congress in 1851, defeat for re-electinu in 1854, appoint ment to be commissioner of the Cen tral Land Office iu 1855 and his de feat for governor in 1860. The War of the Rebellion brought a flood of great principle and new ideas in statesmanship, for which he was prepared neither by the bent of Lis mind nor by his training. He could neither overcome them nor ac cord himself to them, aud was borne under not only by the irresistible ma jority of bis political opponents, but by the rush of meu of less mind, but more adaptability, iu his own party. This makes the second period of his life, from 1862 to 1871, during which lie was six years iu the United States Senate and again an unsuccessful can didate for governor. The last portion of his life's story covers tne time irom nis election as governor in 1872 until his death, dur iog' which be was, in 1874, re-elected governor, and in 1876 and 1884 a can didata for vice-president, in the latter year successfully. His publio life during this time was a constant strug gle against the changed conditions brought about by the war, and an ef fort, never more than partially suc cessful, to regain that identity with the prevaleut political ideas which had been the cause of his rapid ad vancement in early life. The death of Vice President Hon. driika will not make a lasting ini pressiou upon the publio mind, like one wbose geniui lias lelt its impress on bis age. No great thought or great measure has originated with him .and been woven into the woof of our -destinies, and yet, when he fell, a fa miliar figure passed away. He was i man with many friends; warm, en tbusiastic and faithful. They fol lowed bis movements with the keenest interest and every manifestation of willing service. He was possessed of exceptional social qualities; amiable affectionate, easy approached and in his intercourse with those about him carefully considerate uf their feelings. For many years he was a part of the public life of the couBtry, as a leader of his party, shaping its policy, as a part of its machiuery nod always act ire in its operations. lie was an act ive bourbon Democratic partisan of the ante bellum school. He was sin cere in bis partisanship, and untiring in pushing it to the front in his life His death will be mourned especially ,. by those who look upon party success as the road to personal emolument And regarded him as an important in teger in the forces they relied upon to shape the policy of the National Ad luioistration in accordance with their views and hopes. For a life devoted to political activity, restlessly aud persistently as Mr. Hendricks' life was, the time actually passed in office was singularly brief. A member of the State Legislature at the age of twenty-eight years, then a member of the Slate Constitutional Convention soon after, then a member of the Nu lioDal House of Representatives, and of the United States Senate, Governor of his own State, and twice a candi date for Vice President, the time act ually spent in office represents but a small portion of his active political life, but the fact that in his constant rioliticat t rubles, and in his brief terms in olhoe, there was never a hadow cast upon his personal integ rity, is a good thing to recall, now that he has srone from the scenes in bich he so long was a familiar figure. The funeral took place yesterday at his home in Indmnanoiis. ana was very largely attended. Alfonso, King of Spam died on the 26th inst. lie was aired only 28 years, yet had reigned as king for ten years. The Philadelphia Press , sensibly nominates for president of the Senate: Some man whose llepublicauisni has neither dust nor cohwebs upon it. s It is too bad that the predictions of I Democratic journals should be brought to naught, but Col. Quay neverthe- ess declares that be is not and will not be a candidate for Uoitcd States Senator. More than this he has par- lyzed the oldest Democratic inhabi tant of Harrisburg with ihe informa that Democratic clerks in the State reasury Department are to stay.- Venango Citizen. Snouu President Cleveland die the country would be without au execu tive head until the meeting of the United States Senate, which would elect a president pro tern, who would, by virtue of said office, become Presi dent of the U. S. The Senate iieg- ected to choose a president pro tern. before adjournment last spring, thus eaving the country in rather a bad plight should Mr. Cleveland die, he being the only man between the pei' pie and the governing head as the case now stands. I he way oi tne transgressor is bard." It appears to be so with tho transgressing Democrats, both in Haro ilton county, Ohio, and Chicago, Illi nois. In the former a mandamus has been issued to the clerks to issue cer tificates of election to the Republican senators; and in Chicago the court has ordered a recount of the ballots, which will bounce Harrison out of the mayorality. The transgressors though in both these cases do not seem . to have a much harder time than the honest men, for it takes a long time to bring tbe law to bear on them. There is strong hope, though, that by perse verance these rascals can be finally taught that violations of the sanctity of tbe ballot will not pay. J. T.
