We are pleasod to learn that our ex-Prothonotary is prosper ing in his new home; "growing- up with the country," as it were. Mr. J. T. Brennan issues a circu lar to his many coal customers re minding them that now is the best time to lay in their stock for the win ter. Mr. B. handles the best coal in the market and delivers it in your coal bin at the very lowest figure. Deputy Secretary of Internal Affairs J. W. Creenland has our thanks for a very handsome copy of the annual report of the Internal De partment. It is embellished with many fine photographic illustrations, and altogether is a welcome book. Lovers of the beautiful in nature who have the time and the means would be well repaid for it by taking a drive over the plank road between Nebraska and Lacy's. The thickets of laurel (the species known as "big laurel") covering the hillsides and filling the valley along both sides of the road are one mass of beautiful flower clusters. The new bonnty bill passed by the last legislature, sets tho following prices: wild cat $2 ; fox $1 ; mink, weasel and hawk each 50 cents; owl, except the Arcadian screech or barn owl, 50 cents. We will publish the full text of tho bill next week. The "Personal Memoirs of U. ft. Grant," of which Mr. Chadwick has the agency, is the only genuine work on the market. There are many oth er books purporting to be genuine, but are only gotten up to deceive. If you want to be right give your or der to Mr. Chadwick. The small boy who has nothing to do but hie him away to some se cluded shady spot down by the river, and there disport himself amidst the limpid, &c, with no superfluous cov ering to mar the full enjoymeut of his disporting, is the envy of his bigger brethren these days. Peterson's Magazine for August is on hand with its usual promptness and freighted with its customary ele gance. No lady can well afford to be without it when its nominal price is considered, only $2 00 a year. Subscriba for it now. Chas. J. Peter son, 306 Chestnut St., Phila., Pa. II. II. Shoemaker has put on his war paint and hied him to the scenes of conflict on the banks of Conneaut Lake, where the N. G. P., of which he is one, will be encamped during the week. We hope Henry will re turn to his family and friends sound in limb and body, from the campaign. Rev. J. F. Wiant of Monroe, Clarion county, held services for the Reformed congregation on Dutch Hill last Sabbath morning. In the eve ning he occupied Rev. Hickling'a pul pit in the Presbyterian church here, the latter gentleman being somewhat exhausted on account of an attack of illness. The hay crop is about all har vested, the past week having been a most favorable one for that business; the yield is just average, and with an average winter will about supply the demand, commanding a decent figure for those who want to sell. Tho next strike will be for the wheat harvest, which is by no means good in this section. Marionville Lodge, I. O. O. F., will dedicate their new hall on Fri day evening next. Quite a number of the brethren from this and sur rounding towns will be present and participate in the exercises, whioh promise to be very interesting. T. F. Ritcbey Esq., is down for the dedica tion address. We have been prom isod a full report of all that, goes on. Thos. J. Hollis, ono -of Chief Crowley's old officers dropped dead yesterday afternoon a few minutes after drinking two cups of ice water while he was in a very heated state. He was seen to drink the water with great avidity, then plane his hands to his forehead, stagger and fall dead. The coroner viewed the remains and took the evideuce. Erie DUpatch, July 9. It is a pleasure to again receive the Warren Ledger under the man agement of its original owner, Mr. B. F. Morris. As Mr. Morris intimates, it isn't quite so flowery and awfully too-too, as it used to be, but is much more like a common sense country pa per, that records all the incidents and happenings of the town, county and surroundings in the good old fash ioned, Btraight-forward way. We welcome Mr. Morris back into the harness and wish him success. Lacy's Mills, on Big Coon, are again running on full time. The creek has bct-u cleared of all logs and roots and they are repairing the dams so as to be uble to float their logs from the extreme eastern eud of their lands to the mill. The old gaug mill will be taken down and a Dew mill will be built on warrant No. 5505 in the near future. The above lot has not been cut into at all, and con tains from 25 to 35 millions of pine, and probably not less than 20 mil lions of other woods. Tbeir other lands are not so nearly stripped of timber as was supposed, and foreign ers who think our timber resources are nearly exhausted will get Badly "left," after an examination. Our immense forests of hard woods iu the eastern part of the county will build up industries that will be lasting. The Messrs. Lacy will cause things in that locality to assume the old time activity ia the future. Trunks, Traveling Bags, Satchels, at Wm. Smeacbaugh & Com. -t. Lorenzo Haight, an inmate of Dixmont Insane Asylum, escaped from tho institution last Saturday, but was recaptured at Allegheny. He will be remem bered as the sarao fellow who got two terms in the Pen from this county on charges of rape and horse stealing. Clarion Jachtonian. The Mercer Republican speaks of Rev. Merchant, at one time pastor of the M. E. Church of this place, as follows : Rev. A. J. Merchant, Pre siding Elder of the Meadville dis trict, M. E. Cburch, has received the degree of Doctor of Divinity from De Pauw University, Green Castle Ind. Dr. Merchant is a graduate of Allegheny College of some twenty years standing and is well known through all this region as a preacher of learning and ability and his friends will all feel gratified at this new honor conferred upon him. Jacob Smearbaugh yesterday dis posed of his Dutch Hill farm to Mr. Charles Leeper of Clarion, who pur chased it for a home for the aged pa rents of bis wife, Mr. and Mrs. John Stroup, who will there spend their re maining day 8 on earth in happiness and peace. The consideration, we understand, was $2000 which Mr. L. paid in cash, and got an unquestiona ble bargain, besides doing a graceful act in providing for the good old folks. Mr. Smearbaugh will move to his new farm, the Mark Noble place, across the creek, in the fall. It has been customary at regular intei villain some of the counties of the State to adopt a text book on Theory of Teaching; the examina tion on Theory being taken from the book. The idea is certainly a good one. No such thing has yet been done, that is, heretofore, in our coun ty. ButnowSnpt. Ilillard tells us that for the next two years Quincy Methods, the newest and best book of that kind published, is adopted, and that all examinations for the next two years, in Theory, will be made from this book. Tho Kellett Extract Co., intend to build a tannery in connection with the Extract Works at Salmon Creek, which will be rebuilt soon. Then a Railroad should be built from Tiones ta up the creek to Sheffield, where connection could be had with the P. & E. and T. V. Rys., the latter giving connection with the B. & O. Narrow Gauge Division to Mt. Jewett, . where a link is being built to connect that with the B. E. & C. Ry., one of the R. G. Taylor system of Narrow Gauge roads leading to Attica and Buffalo. The distance from Tionesta to Sheffield is only 40 miles, and at the present prices of labor and ma terial a road could be constructed be tween those points for not more than $6,000 per mile, and equipped and and completed for $500,000. Consid ering our vast resources the invest ment could not but be a paying one. Young people, that is to say the rising generation, seem to think it be neath them to show any respect for age. A venerable gentleman is re ferred to as "the old party yonder," father is the "governor," and mother the "old woman." The general idea seems to be that it looks smart to speak disrespectful and that it conveys tbe impression that they are their own master, obliged to look to their pa rents only for food, clothes and lodg ing, their company being all the re turn to be expected. Boys are espec ially fond of showing tbeir independ ence of parental authority, and their disregard of it is the ruin of many a life. Girls do not, as a rule, speak so disrespectfully of their parents, but often actions speak louder than words. At times it is amusing to note the wise speeches of these young folk who know so much more than their fathers and mothers, although their lives are bo much shorter. It is probably their vast experience which gives them tbe assurance they are so proud of. Ex. We call attention to the adver tisement of "Chamberlain Institute," Randolph, N. Y., in this issuo. This is unquestionaly a good school for both sexes. It has done excelleut work lor thirty-livo years. We sug gest that those inquiring for a safe in stitution of learning should look into the merits of this school.- Send for Catalogue,- List of Patents.
