A slight sprinkling of snow last night, but rather pleasant flgaio to day. Miss Sad fe Pease returned home Monday from her visit to relatives in York State. Roy, son of O. C. Brownell, is down with what hid physician saya is a light attack of typhoid fever. Rafting ia about over for this sea son, and nearly every body has re turned from their trips down the river. Mr. J. A. Sheriff, of Aledo, Illi nois, stopped a few Lours iu town Monday and paid us a pleaBant call. The twin whistles lately erected on Rohinion & Bonner's saw mill give an odd though not unpleasant tone. Mr. John Thomson, of Harmony township, is this week announced as a candidate for Associate Judge, sub ject to Republican usages. The roads through tho country were already well dried up last week, and in fact are seldom seen in better condition at thla time of year. A disease akin to diphtheria, if not the rliticaso itself, is prevailing at RedclyfTe, this county. Two chil dren of Peter Gadly's have died. Col. Dyer of Washington, Pa., Past Commander of the O. A. R. of Pa., paid our to vn a visit last week, as the guest of Hon. J. B. Agnew. A trirl arrivul at EJ. Ueihel's yesterday niomiog brought the smiles to its pap's countenance, and he has been doing tho cigar act with an easy grace. Findlay's Insurance Agenoy of Franklin represents nothing but first class Companies and every loss is promptly settled. J. 11. McPherson, Solicitor. 2t. Thing are beginning to- look green, and it woo't be long till cattle will be able to pick their own living ; with hay selling at $20 and $25 per ton it is about timo. II. S. Brockway, formerly of the Lawrence House, has leased a hotel from Wm. Edgie, at Tylersburg sta tion, and is preparing to take posses sion forthwith. We wish him success. Floyd Proper is confined to bis bed by an attack of malarial fever. His physicians believe they have the fever under control and that he will soon be able to go about ugain. We hope so. The ruu of lumber out of the Clarion is principally from the head waters, it seems, when the "run" has reached the month. And it is re ported not so large when summed up as was anticipated. Farmers take warning! get your buildings insured in safe companies. Findlay's Agency represents none but first class. J. II. McPherson, Solici tor. 2t. The woods up Hunter Run were on firs Monday. It is to be hoped there will he just enough rain to keep these fires down until tho woods get so green they can't born. They are an intolerable nuisance. Dr. Morrow has set an example which more of our citizens should emulate; he has had erected in front of his residence a good street lamp, which answers not only for his own convenience but that of pedestrians who are obliged to travel that way ia dark nights. Every farmer should keep his buildings insured ; nothing pays bet ter. Fiudlay's Agency has the repu tation of paying all losses promptly. J. H. McPherson, Solicitor. 2t. Swallows have arrived, and that settles it. Yon needn't look for much cold weather after they put in an ap pearance The whip-poor-will has also got around and is preparing to set up business for the summer. No one can afford to take his own risk against fire. Get insured with Findlay's Agency; all first-claaa com panies. J. II. McPherson, Solicitor. William Royer will leave the Reid House, at Clarington, before long; William Callan will succeed hini. Mr. Royer is putting up a house on the Jefferson Bide of the river, alongside of the Brookville road, which he will occupy. We are pleased to inform our readers that Judge Arner is recovering from his apoplectic stroke as fast as could reasonably bo expected. His physician feels assured ihat ho will get through without further trouble if his patience don't give out. Mr. W. W. Kellett of Boston, aud Mr. W. II. Crocker of Oleao, N. Y., were in town during 'the week. Mr. Kellett was not prepared to say whether the extensive extract works at Kellettville, which burned down last fall, would bo rebuilt or not. Peterson's Magazine for May, that handsomest and best of ladies' fashion books, is issued. This num ber is fully up to if not ahead of for mer issues, and when the price is con sidered, only $2.00 a year, we should think that no lady would be without it. Address Chai. J. Peterson, 306 Chestnut St., Phila., Pa. Our- attention was called to a very handsomely painted and finished wagon at the paint shop of II. M. Dighton the other day. Tho wagon, a solid and substantial one, was built by Messrs. Blum and Bennett. Mr. Dighton also makes a specialty of gaining, paper hanging and calct mining, and will guarantee satisfac tion in every instance; he takes a back seat for no one. N. P. Wheeler of East Hickory has bought the M. P. Getchell house, and will become a resident of Tidi oute. His coming is welcomed, heart ily. Hdioute News. This item will be quite newsy to most of our citizens, few of whom were aware that Mr. Wheeler contemplated such a change. We will part with the family with a great deal of reluctance, and still hope they may not leave our county. Chas. Raisig sold three new wag ons last week, making in all five this season. He has ten more on the way which can be finished ou short notice. Besides this, he is building a spring wagon which goes to Oil City, and a first class buggy for a party at Line ville, Clarion county. He ia getting a first class carriage painter, and in vites those who have work iu that lice to give him a call. On Thursday, April 16, in the afternoon, the houso of Mrs. Kuhns, iu Barnett township, was destroyed by fire. The family those at home were working in the orchard just above and close by the house, but strange to say, saw nothing of the fire until the roof was falling in. One or two of the family succeeded in saving a part of their clothing. With this exception eveiything in the house was lost. The fire is supposed to have originated in a defective flue or stove-pipe. Loss unknown. The Marriage License bill has passed the Senate, and is likely to be come a law. It's a very sad crack to the unmarried. It requires orphans' courts to keep a complete registry of marriages, issue marriages, etc.; the court record to be prima facie evi dence of marriage. In the case of minors, the cunsont of the parents or guardians, personally or in writing, is required. Where a marriage is sol emnized by the parties themselves, a certificate of the fact must be signed by the parties and attested by two witnesses. We learn with regret that Dr. C. A. Thrush of Clarington, this county, died at his homo on Sunday last. We understand he had suffered with an attack of diphtheria for a few days, but had recovered sufficiently to be out again, and we surmise that be must have taken a backset and died suddenly. This is the second doctor who has died at that place within the past three months, the first being Dr. Burkett, whose place Dr. Thrush went there to fill. He was a young man, yet had rapidly gained the con fidence of the people of his communi ty and built up quite an extensive practice. Dr. J. W. Morrow's dental work has been accumulating so much that he wrote for Dr. L. F. Miller, his as sociate in dentistry, to come and as sist him. He received a letter from him ye3terday that he would be here next Monday and remain for at 4east one week. No one need be afraid of disappointment during the week, for there will be sure to bo one iu the oflice. All kinds of dental work done and guaranteed. Their oflice is over Wm. Smearbaugh & Co'b store in rear of Republican office. New Trial Granted. A new trial has been granted L. C. Conroe, for the reason that the Court erred in rejecting certain testimony on the former trial, as will be seen by the following opinion of the Court, filed April 23, 1885: Commonwealth vs. L. C. Couroe, No. 4, Dec. Sessions, 1884. Without now adverting to all the reasons al leged for a new trial, we think that the Court erred in refusing to permit the defendant's counsel to test the knowledge of the witneB?, P. M. Clark, of the hand writing of J. II. DiDg man, by exhibiting to tho witness cer tain papers containing the admitted signature -of Dingman, and to ask him whether the bigoatures to such papers were in the hand writiog of Dingman. This was offered for the purpose of showing that the witness, Clark, did not know the hand writing of Dingman, and was rejected by the Court on thej ground that the pro posed test was not cross examination We think we were clearly in error in this ruling. It ia cot for us to say whether the overruling of the offer of defendant in this respect did or did not prejudice him with the jury. Having rejectedjevidence which de fendant was entitled to have go to the jury, our duty is plain. rn - 1 . , . me ruie to snow cause why a new trial should not be granted is made absolute.
