been rendered totally useless, by the
severe freezing of the past winter.
By referen:e to the proper corner

The "peep frogs" have thawed

before epring comes, which will re
quire two more freezes.
Among the ice piled out on West

one cake which measured a trifle

Chos. Bonner's little boy baby,

Mr. Joseph Carson, & highly re
spected and well-known citizen of
Neilltowu, this county, died on the
11th inst. His funeral was attended
by a large concourse of friends on the
following Monday. His loss will be
keenly felt in tho community in
which he moved.
The balmy weather of the past
few days melted tbe snow and ice in
the big woods sufficiently to give our
lumbermen a splendid flood both in
the creek and river, and a large quan
tity of lumber ia fact we might say
all of it hns been run to the mouth
of tbe creek. Most of it will pull out
for the lower markets to-day.
Artist Greaves, of Warren, has
several orders for portraits from par
ties in Kansas City, Mo., and leaves
for there this week to do the work.
He expects to be absent about six
weeks, during which time his elegant
studio will be opeu to accommodate
any who may call for frames, artist
materials, &c, a large and elegant
stock of which he always keeps on
hand.
We never did boast much of
Forest county's sheep raising qualities,
but here is a little item that we think
is uot going to be beaten in many
counties of tbe Stale: Geo. W. Kiog,
on his farm at tbe lower end of West
Hickory flats, has fifty-two ewes, the
same yielding eighty-five lambs this
spring, all living and doing finely.
The cake belongs to Mr. Kiog, we
think.
Mrs. Jared P. Huling, who has
beeu totally blind from cataract for
about three years, is now iu a fair
way to have her eye-sight at least par

Titubville, operated upon her eyes one
day last week, and under bis treat
ment she ia now able to eee and distin
guish small objects at quite a distar.ee.
It is devoutly wished that her im
provement may continue and be per
manent. William S. Baldwin, formerly
general passenger agent of the Buf
falo, New York & Philedelpbia, but
now holding the same position with
the Louisville, New Albany & Chica
go road, has been honored with the
election as president of the Chicago
railroad association (passsenger de
partment). Blizzard. We congratu
late Mr. B. on the mark of esteem
shown him by his brother railroaders,
and know his many friends in this
section will hear of it witb much
pleasure.
Mrs.. J. C. Partridge; who has
embarked in the millinery business,
had her "opening days" yesterday and
to-day, and many of our ladies took
advantage of the occasiou to look
over her elegant stock, no doubt tbe
finest ever shown in this section. An
inspection of her goods will readliy
convince any one that there is no fur
ther use of feuding away for any
thing in line ot head-wear. Mrs.
Partridge is certain that she cab
please every one, and at prices within
the reach of all. Give her a call.
Hod, Lewis Aroer, of Salmon
Creek, one of our Associate Judges,
had an apoplectic stroke on Sunday
eveniog last, since which lime he has
been confined to bis bed. Drs. Mor
row of this place, and Davis of Oil
City were up to see him Monday eve
ning and report him in a critical con
dition, but feel assured, if be should
not get another attack, he will recov
er. The Judge has never been con
fined to his bed, and bis friends say it
is a bard matter to keep him there
now. His illness, just at this time is
especially unfortunate, as he bus on
bands the running of all the Salmon
Creek lumber. We hope to be able
to report him much improved in our
next issue.
It is with sincere sorrow that we
announce the death of Mary, wife of
our Worthy friend Matthew Elliott, of
Newtown Mills. She had been afflict
ed for nearly a year, during which
time',' especially in the latter weeks,
she was a great sufferer. She came to
Forest county with her husband from
Glasgow, Scotland, in 1870, having
been married there in 18C5. She was
a kind and affectionate woman, highly
esteemed by all who knew ber, and
will be greatly mUsed by her neighbors
and friends. To the sorrowing hus
band, who is thus bereft of a loving
life partner, we extend sincere condo
lence, and assure him of the sympa
thy of tbe community in his affliction.
The funeral services were conducted
in the Presbyterian Church of this
place on Monday, Kev. Uickling offi
ciating, and the remains were laid to
rest in Riverside Cemetery.
Drowning Accident.
Two weeks ago to-day, Eddie, an
eight-year-old son of Mr. J. E. Berk
heimer, was drowned in Tionesta
Creek at what is known as Lower
Sheffield. It appears the young lad
was playing with three other children
near the creek bank and by some mis
hap slid into the water, his compan
ions being unable to rescue him. At
the time he was wearing a pair of
large rubber boots, which with his hat
were found some rods below,' but the
body had not beeu recovered at last
accounts. The heart-broken parents
request (be citizens along the creek to
keep a watch for and assist them in
finding the body.
