The trouting parties have met with very advene luck so far this scanon. Mr. Jacob Wagner, of this town ship, lost a valuable breeding mare last week. F. V. Laraey closed a successful term of school in the Huddleson dis trict, this township, last week. Cbas. Peterson, who lives across the river, near Hunter's grist mill, got a new boy at his house Sunday. Now is the time to catch the trailing arbutus, the earliest and sweetest of all flowers in this latitude. Mrs. . Huddleson, of Tiouesta township, ia lviug very low at her home. She is about 80 years of age. Dr. W. L. Chrisman, of Eldred, Pa., was here looking after his Forest county interests Monday and Tuesday. Mrs. W. C. Bromley, of Stewarts Kuu. has our best thanks for a jar of most delicious homemade maple syrup. Mr. W. J. Roberts of our town was called to Westfield, N. Y., last week lo attend the funeral of his aged father. With few exceptions, all kind of root crops buried in pits last fall, have been rendered totally useless, by the severe freezing of the past winter. By referen:e to the proper corner it will ba observed that lion. John A. Proper i.t announced as a candi date for Auciate Judge, subject lu Republican usages. Mrs. Geo. llolemau received the sad intelligence by wire Monday of the death of her futlier, of Richmond Centre, Ohio, lid had been sick about six mouths. Ed. Gillespie departed for his Crawford county farm on Monday, taking with him his epankiug team, the combined weight of which is 3,- 300. Luck to you, E.I. Shade Tipton, a prominent and highly respected citizen of Tidioute, died iu that place lust Friday morn- ng, after a long mi tedious illness. The place loses a valuable man. Supt. Ilillard reports that itf five of the Spring Examinations already held there have been 50 teachers ex amined. This is perhaps the largest percentage ever shown in this county. Mr. A. B. Iloyt who has moved lo town within the past week and oc cupies part of the Forest House, was delighted by the arrival of a nice girl baby at his' domicile Sunday eve ning last. Mr3. T. B. Cobb is away visiting her daughter, Mrs. T. D. Dunn, at West Chester, Pa. She will also meet her little grand daughter that arrived at the Doctors's domicile a few days ago. The "peep frogs" have thawed out sufficiently to make themselves heard. But according to the old tra dition tbey must thaw out three times before epring comes, which will re quire two more freezes. Among the ice piled out on West Hickory flats by the recent gorge was one cake which measured a trifle over seven feet in thickness. This was a "specimen brick" of the open winter now drawing to a close. Ex-Co. Commissioner Ledebur has given up tbe flouring mill at Ne braska and moved to his farm on Dutch Hill, where he will till the soil and live tbe independent life of an honest farmer tho balance of his days. Charlie Clark, wife and two chil li dren, arrived from Edge Hill, near Philadelphia, last week. Chas. will help his father on tbe farm this sum mer, and will no doubt make this his future abode. Glad to weloome him back to his old heme. Lost A shepard dog, white neck, shoulders and foot; black on the back ; about one year old, and ans wers to name of "Carlo." Any one bringing said dog to Mrs. H. S. Thom as, TioDesta, Pa., will be suitably re warded. Argument Court was held here Monday. The matter of granting a new trial to L. C. Con mo came up and was elaborately argued by coun sel ou both sides. Tbe Court with held his decision in the case, but may give it some time wilhin a week. Chos. Bonner's little boy baby, just beginning to walk, was quite se verely scalded by upsetting upon him a pitcher of boiling water last Sat urday morning. The right arm re ceived tho severest burn, but the little sufferer is getting along quite well. Mr. Joseph Carson, & highly re spected and well-known citizen of Neilltowu, this county, died on the 11th inst. His funeral was attended by a large concourse of friends on the following Monday. His loss will be keenly felt in tho community in which he moved. The balmy weather of the past few days melted tbe snow and ice in the big woods sufficiently to give our lumbermen a splendid flood both in the creek and river, and a large quan tity of lumber ia fact we might say all of it hns been run to the mouth of tbe creek. Most of it will pull out for the lower markets to-day. Artist Greaves, of Warren, has several orders for portraits from par ties in Kansas City, Mo., and leaves for there this week to do the work. He expects to be absent about six weeks, during which time his elegant studio will be opeu to accommodate any who may call for frames, artist materials, &c, a large and elegant stock of which he always keeps on hand. We never did boast much of Forest county's sheep raising qualities, but here is a little item that we think is uot going to be beaten in many counties of tbe Stale: Geo. W. Kiog, on his farm at tbe lower end of West Hickory flats, has fifty-two ewes, the same yielding eighty-five lambs this spring, all living and doing finely. The cake belongs to Mr. Kiog, we think. Mrs. Jared P. Huling, who has beeu totally blind from cataract for about three years, is now iu a fair way to have her eye-sight at least par tially restored. Dr. J. L. Proper, of Titubville, operated upon her eyes one day last week, and under bis treat ment she ia now able to eee and distin guish small objects at quite a distar.ee. It is devoutly wished that her im provement may continue and be per manent. William S. Baldwin, formerly general passenger agent of the Buf falo, New York & Philedelpbia, but now holding the same position with the Louisville, New Albany & Chica go road, has been honored with the election as president of the Chicago railroad association (passsenger de partment). Blizzard. We congratu late Mr. B. on the mark of esteem shown him by his brother railroaders, and know his many friends in this section will hear of it witb much pleasure. Mrs.. J. C. Partridge; who has embarked in the millinery business, had her "opening days" yesterday and to-day, and many of our ladies took advantage of the occasiou to look over her elegant stock, no doubt tbe finest ever shown in this section. An inspection of her goods will readliy convince any one that there is no fur ther use of feuding away for any thing in line ot head-wear. Mrs. Partridge is certain that she cab please every one, and at prices within the reach of all. Give her a call. Hod, Lewis Aroer, of Salmon Creek, one of our Associate Judges, had an apoplectic stroke on Sunday eveniog last, since which lime he has been confined to bis bed. Drs. Mor row of this place, and Davis of Oil City were up to see him Monday eve ning and report him in a critical con dition, but feel assured, if be should not get another attack, he will recov er. The Judge has never been con fined to his bed, and bis friends say it is a bard matter to keep him there now. His illness, just at this time is especially unfortunate, as he bus on bands the running of all the Salmon Creek lumber. We hope to be able to report him much improved in our next issue. It is with sincere sorrow that we announce the death of Mary, wife of our Worthy friend Matthew Elliott, of Newtown Mills. She had been afflict ed for nearly a year, during which time',' especially in the latter weeks, she was a great sufferer. She came to Forest county with her husband from Glasgow, Scotland, in 1870, having been married there in 18C5. She was a kind and affectionate woman, highly esteemed by all who knew ber, and will be greatly mUsed by her neighbors and friends. To the sorrowing hus band, who is thus bereft of a loving life partner, we extend sincere condo lence, and assure him of the sympa thy of tbe community in his affliction. The funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian Church of this place on Monday, Kev. Uickling offi ciating, and the remains were laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery. Drowning Accident. Two weeks ago to-day, Eddie, an eight-year-old son of Mr. J. E. Berk heimer, was drowned in Tionesta Creek at what is known as Lower Sheffield. It appears the young lad was playing with three other children near the creek bank and by some mis hap slid into the water, his compan ions being unable to rescue him. At the time he was wearing a pair of large rubber boots, which with his hat were found some rods below,' but the body had not beeu recovered at last accounts. The heart-broken parents request (be citizens along the creek to keep a watch for and assist them in finding the body. Forest County's Insane.
