Representative Berry stopped in towu a few hours Monday enroute for his pobt at llarrisbnrg. lie had been called to Buffalo, N. Y.,to attend the i'uueral of a nioej. The weather this morning looks just a triflo "squally," nnd if the rain should continue many hours there will likely be some pretty badly swol len btreains hereabouts. Mr. John Muenzcnherger re ceived the sad intelligence from Ger many on Monday that his father had died on the 14lh of March. Uo bad attained tho ripe old age of 80 years. A storm passed over this section laH iTUiiduy ufternoou accompanied by hc-avy thunder aud lightning. Vn believe this moms more cold weather, according to an old theory. It is n handsome , new dray wagon turned out by Chas. Ilaisig, and will always be found on the streets during business hours ready to accommodate those having goods to hauled. On April 1st, Governor Pattison nominated Rev. E. E. Iligbee super intendent of public instruction for an other term. His reappointment is a great surprise to the democrats who bad expected a parlisau appointment. Among the applicants were Professor Roth, of Meadville, Bobb, of Lock Haven, Hone, of Allentown, Ileiges, of Shippeusburg and Schafler, of Kutztown. On Monday morning the teacher of Smoky Hill school was astounded on reaching the school house to find that the school house had been broken iuto by some unknown villian, the stove-pipe pulled down and thrown on tho floor, and the stove overturned. The party or parties had had a fire in the stove, and had upset the stove with fire in it. A holo about 4 feet square was burned in the floor and lire was yet burning in one of the joists. S, Foreman's house the workmen found that the ground was frozen to the depth of three and one-half feet. And yet there are quite a number of parties in town waiting for the frost to leave the ground so they can dig cellars and lay foundations for new houses. Miss Anna Harrison, of whom we spoke in our last issue as lying se riously ill with typhoid fever at Rus sell's mills, died on Thursday of last week, and waa brought to this place Saturday for iuterment. Last Thursday afternoon as By. ron Landers, cf Neilltown, was re turning home from his brother's funer al, his team took fright at a passing train near the depot, ran quite a dis tance and upset the hack in which were seated his wife, two children and Joe Landers. Mr. Landers was bruised somewhat as was also Joe; Mrs. Landers was so severely injured that she could not proceed farther that day, but remained iu town nutil this week one day. Tho t wo children, strange to say, escaped injury. The ice in tho river at this place commeuced to move on Thursday af ternoon last about four o'clock, and within two bonis the river was com paratively clear. At about half past nite iu the night, however, a heavv gorge came down which filled the riv er more than baok full, and backed the water some distance over the flats, and causing many of the front street families to vacate their houses. For tunately no serious damage was done, and the water began to recedo rapidly aoout deven o ciock. ine river is now comparatively clear of ice from its source, and the dangers from a bad break up aro past for this spriug, let us be thankful. Trains on the river divisiou of the B., 3N. Y. & P. R. have been more or less delayed for the past week. The cause has been the tearing up of the tra:k on West Hickory flats about four miles above Tionesta. During the flood on Thursday night the water overfio-ved the banks at that place and tho ice crowded the railroad track off its bed for a distance of about a mile and a half, tearing down a long trestle on which stood five cars of coal. It is said the road bed was covered with i'je to a depth of two to ten feet. A large force of men lias been at work aud all trains are on time again. Passengers were trans ferred in wagons up at the gorge. Council Minutes. Monday, April 6, 1885. Cuuno.il met at Secretary's office. Burgess and Councilman all present. S. D. Irwin, Adjt. Reflections. Finding how short-lived is every thing terrestrial, should we on that account be sad and desponding? On the contrary we should learn to make the most of the passing hours ; try to cdapt ourselves td existicg circura-8,afl- Yesterday the sun shone, everytnV seemed bright; tonight all is dark ;-'.!. torm wages fiercely without; we h'e lnQ dreary rain beating piteonsly agalct the windows Sitting alone we have driwj iut0 a chaos of conflicting thoughtky ei)au we despair? Rather let us thint" . even'time it shall be light." Fully realizing that nine-teoths of the wor ry of life is borrowed, let us gather new courage; do your part no differ ence how small you may think it; to some despairing one it may seem great. Be cheerful, industrious, prudent, then ; throw anxiety to the winds. We read, "sufficient unto the day is tho evil thereof," so also is the good of the day usually sufficient if he will only make it so. Then remember, it is not euough to enjoy yourself. Selfish en joyment may prove incomplete; give your over-laden companions a lift with their onerous loads ; try the "lift cure" for neighboring ills. Life is made up of little things; the common place affairs of every day life that scatter either sunshine or shadow around your path. Hope, Help, Love. These are good words to speak and hear Fpoken; good ut morning, aoon, or night; at the beginuiog of the year, throughout tho year, and at us closing, inenieiiiie ne long or short, "let us live while we live," not for ourselves alone, but for ourselves and others, so that when we "go hence" that the path we leave for others to tread may be garnished with sunshine instead shadow.
