t -. . .? i n .tf J. E. WENK, - - EDITOR. WEDXESDAT IKORXlJiG, FEB. 6, 1SE4. Announccmonts ! Our rates for annonncclng candidates 'fur Delegates to the Stnte Convention will bo $2, strictly cash In advance. SAMUEL D. IRWIN. Esq., of Tiones ' tn, will lo a candidate for Delegate to the ; Repulbiean State Convention, to be voted : for on February 19, Wendell Piiillifs, the great ora r tor, and one of first abolitionists, died at iiis homo iu BoHon, on Sunday last. Hon. Samuel Griffith will not be a candidate for judge io Mercer k County, HiBSon S. li. Griffith will accept tha Democratic nomination if offered him. ' The hope of the Democrats is that tho Ohio tariff platform may be adopt- '. ed -by their National convention fr the reason that just what it means no fellow has as yet been able to find out. V Colonel Morrison, chairman and overseer of the House Committee on Ways and Means, declares tbat the Ohio Democrats in Congress are only 'joking when they ask increased duties ' on wool. And it looks as if Brother ' Morrison were more than half right. The "feeler'' thrown out by Gov ernor Pattison through his henchmen as to the calling of another extra . session, was sufficient to convinco the j champion light-weight reformer that such a course would "not go down" j with the people, and tha project has ; been abandoned. . Gen. Miles was called upon to tell ! what he knew about the capture of Jeff. Davis, and made tha statement ' that Davis was cognizant of the in tended assassination of Abraham Lincoln ; that a proposition to kill the president was not only rnadVia writ iug to the Confederate Government, . but endorsed by Jefferson Davis ! his own hand writing, and referred to !. the Confederate Secretary of War for action. . ; The Fitz John Porter bill passed the House Friday, and will doubtless pass the Senate, as the composition of that body has not changed materially : since it before pronounced in favor of I the bill . Public sentiment has grown ) steadily m favor of General Porter, and his rehabilitation by Congress r will meet with the hearty approval of r . i . i. i me majority oi nis countrymen ana t the tacit acquiescence of nearly all the - remainder. . I The coal oil Democracy of Ohio i done with Governor Hoadly. lie S not the Ohio Democrat whom they j desire to see go up higher. Hoadly's relations with the members of tb Legislature are only exceeded in lack t ot cordiality by the coolness which ; exists between Pattison and the shin ' ing lights of his party. Like Putti- son's visits to the city of his home Hoadly s visits to Cincinnati and , Cleveland are likely to become few and far between. Mr John Kelly, of New York nas expressed ine opinion Mat it is : absolutely necessary for the democra cy io carry mat Eiate mis year, and in order to do so a iNew lorlc man ' must be nominated. As it has been frequently demonstrated that the 1 State caunot he carried against Kel ly, and as Kelly is against everybody but himself, this may be construed to ' ruean that he is willing to head the ticket of the democratic party, pro viding overtures are made in the proper spirit. Meadville Republican, Governor Pattison fastened on to , a BectionoftheParto'earand whisp- ered into it that there would be uo ex tra session of the Legislature. This I reminds us of the story thatsome bold bad boys had pulled the tail board from a cart laden with saud, which was going up hill, the driver beiog kuown to be a very profane man. Ihen the boys followed the cart to the top of the hill to hear the driver swear. When the latter halted his horse for a rest nd discovered that he bad left his load of sand at the bottom of the hill, his feeing? overcame him, and he remark j ed with sorrow : "You boys can go home; there aiu't going to be any . swearing here to day. I can't do tbe subject justice." Harritburg Tele- IvErt'HLiCANS throughout tho coun ty should not neglect to organize election boards in their respective townships and receive votes for Dele gates to the State Convention, on the 19th. Let us have as good a turn out as possible, and give us a fair express ion in the matter of selecting dele gates. - That Senator-elect Tayne holds the reins of his party team in Ohio is ren dered certain by" the very democratic democracy of the State Legislature, iu insulting Governor Hoadly by re jecting bis nomination of ex-Governor Foster as one of tha Trustees of the Toledo Asylum for the Insane, all the rest of the trustees being Democratic. Senator Payne may be using some thing larger than a spoon to clean out that Augean stable, but if this is a specimen of bis work ho takes a big tool to move a mighty small speck. Where on earth could such an example of infinitesimal smallncss be found, but in the Democratic party ? ChaiIoe has followed charge since the election of Henry B. Payne to the Senate, and, between . attacks on the men who voted for him by his oppo nents and letters published by his supporters from Democratic editors and ethers askinc for money, very ittle reputation is left for either fac tion to lose. If Payne had no other ambition than the Senate, be might feel safe iu this place, having lost nothing but bis reputation, ani prob ably feeling rich enough to buy an other in time ; but he is now an avowed candidate for the Democratic pres idential nomination, and the man must be a fool who thinks the scan dals of Columbus in January could be kept concealed through a presi dential contest.
